Hello.
Today, we start our Central Black Sea series from Altınordu, the central district of Ordu province.
Have fun watching…
Ordu, located in the Central and Eastern Black Sea Region of the Black Sea Region, is the thirtieth most populous city in Turkey. The total area of the city, which stands out with its historical riches as well as its natural beauties, is 6 thousand square kilometers. Ordu is the 57th largest province in terms of area.
According to 2021 population data, 761 thousand live in Ordu. Altınordu has 19 districts, mainly Ünye, Fatsa, Persembe, Mesudiye, Akkus. While the central district Altınordu is the most populous district with a population of 230 thousand people, Kabadüz is the district of Ordu with the least population with 7 thousand 500 people. The plate code of Ordu, which gained the title of Metropolitan after the 2014 local elections, is 52.
The first known settlement in Ordu dates back to the 7th century BC. The area known as Bozukkale, which is about five kilometers away from the city center, is the first settlement in the city center. The settlement established with the name Kotyora means Kut Region. Since 675 BC, the region, including Ordu, was dominated by the Cimmerians, Milesians, Persians and Macedonians. When the Macedonian King Alexander ended the domination of the Persians here, the Pontus State captured the Black Sea coast. In the 1st century BC, the Roman Empire abolished the Pontus State and established dominance in this region.
After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the region came under the domination of the Turks with the conquest of Anatolia by the Turks, and the Trabzon Empire took it from the Seljuks for a while during the Crusades. The region, which was annexed to the lands of the Ottoman Empire by Yıldırım Bayezid in 1391, came under the protection of the Ottoman Empire in 1461, when Fatih Sultan Mehmet completely abolished the Trabzon Empire.
There are different opinions about where the name Ordu comes from. One of these views is that the name Ordu was given by Hacı Emiroğlu Süleyman Bey as a result of the gathering of twelve thousand people in Eskipazar to conquer Giresun in 1396.
Agriculture has a large place in the economy of Ordu province. Almost 80% of the active population is engaged in agriculture. Although there is little land suitable for planting, hazelnut cultivation is carried out on the slopes due to its mild climate and abundant rainfall. Ordu meets 50% of hazelnut production in Turkey. The most important livelihood of Ordu is hazelnut cultivation. Although there are approximately one hundred million hazelnut trees throughout the province, an average of eighty thousand tons of hazelnuts are obtained. Unye, Fatsa and Persembe counties, especially the central county, are in the first place in hazelnut production.
Potatoes, corn, beans, soybeans, barley and wheat can be counted among the other agricultural products grown in Ordu. In Ordu, where tea cultivation is also carried out, animal husbandry is an important source of livelihood in the highlands, as the plateaus are suitable for animal husbandry. In districts such as Aybastı, Mesudiye and Korgan, besides sheep and cattle breeding, beekeeping is also carried out.
Chestnut honey of Ordu, which is in the first place in terms of honey production in our country, is famous. While a small part of the people of Ordu are sericulture, the people living in the coastal areas make their living by fishing. Anchovy, haddock, horse mackerel, red mullet and mullet are among the most caught fish.
Almost half of Ordu, which is very rich in terms of forest assets, is covered with forests. Beech, oak, hornbeam, alder and fir are the most common trees in the province. Industry has not developed much in the province, which is poor in terms of minerals. In addition to factories producing hazelnuts, there are feed, flour, fish oil, timber and cement factories.
Increasing its tourism potential every year, Ordu welcomes both domestic and foreign tourists for all four seasons with its untouched nature, plateaus, long beaches and newly opened ski resort.
If you happen to pass by Ünye, one of the most important districts of Ordu with its deep-rooted history, in the summer months, you can enjoy the sea and sunbathe all day long in İnciraltı, Kavaklar and Uzunkum, which are among the widest beaches of the Black Sea Region. You can relax and enjoy the fresh air in Çamlık picnic area, which is the oxygen source of both Ordu and Ünye.
In Fatsa, which is 39 kilometers from the center of Ordu, you can see historical and natural beauties, as well as dive underwater and swim in the clear sea. If you want to spend a few days alone with nature and fill your eyes with green, Thursday Plateau, Turnalık Plateau and Çambaşı Plateau are waiting for you.
If you come to Ordu in the spring, do not forget that you will encounter a unique view in Ulugöl, the largest lake in the city.
