Enjoyed the playthrough. Your playthroughs are the best on the web. Your video quality is very good. Also, you do a great, yet concise, job of explaining the rules and your thought process in play. I really like Rhado's playthroughs as well but you are much more focused and clear in your explanations. Thanks for what you do!

Great job....I don’t understand everyone saying you don’t need this if you have Orleans...other than the bag building, and even that mechanic is somewhat different in Altiplano, the two games feel entirely unique

I own Orleans, haven't played, but seeing the playthoughs previously they seem pretty different to me.

@@clumsydad7158 Saying Altiplano is like Orléans is a bit like saying any game with a deckbuilding element, e.g. Ruins of Arnac or Dune Imperium, is like Dominion. Sure, they share the deck building mechanic but they still very much have their own identity and are just deeper gaming experiences.

The difference between this and Orleans is that I'd actually play this. ;)

In the first few minutes I can already tell this is the best review I've seen for this game. You actually explain the player board and the different areas on there, and you actually pull the chits from the bag, thank you! Everyone else pretty much skips over that. Great first turn walk through. There are quite a few actions to resolve, so it seems 2p would be a good amount for playing. I really like the graphic design of this game, lovely. ... no way to generate Alpacas on your board, and they are worth zero at the end of the game, wha?? who would'a thunk that!

Thanks for the great play through. I was leaning hard but I’m absolutely sold now. Glad that Renegade decided to bring this one to the States.

Thanks for the very good run through. I was on the fence about this game but you really made it seem like fun. I am a huge Orleans fan so I was not sure about this based on the description from others. Nice job.

Thanks for the vid, Jon! Appreciate the effort you put in with all the different angles and shots you take and I hope going part-time still feels like a great decision! This game doesn't seem to lend itself to an exciting Playthrough, but it does look like one I'd really like to play/buy. I too would LOVE you to do a Review of this one!

I would like to review it as well, though I haven't actually played it since I filmed this playthrough. So many games to play and cover!

Hey Jon, First of all, I’ve been following your channel forever - I love it, and appreciate what you are doing for the community. So thanks for the time you put into making quality content! Secondly, I just finished slogging through my first playthrough of Altiplano - of course it was rough as it was a learning game, and the strategies felt a completely lost on me. I remembered you had done a playthrough, (I watched it when you first posted it) to check out what strategies you might have used, and I noticed what I think (rookie here) might be a rules mistake early on that I don’t think you’ve annotated in the subtitles yet... and I don’t see it mentioned in the comments - so I’m pointing it out and/or asking about it: I *think* when in the market you can only spend money you have previously placed on an action spot in the planning phase with the intention to spend. In the renegade rulebook (bottom of page 6) it mentions in the planning phase that sometimes in the market you place coins rather than tiles. So, my understanding is that on your first turn (and maybe subsequent turns? I’m still watching...), in order to get the expansion board, you would have had to place a coin on the market space while planning (which can be retrieved in cleanup, in case someone beats you to something) and that you wouldn’t have been able to use any gained coins from selling this round to buy stuff later in that same round. I realize I’m a good 5 months late, and this game is likely out-of-mind, and after only one play I might be WAY off, but I thought I might point it out and/or ask if I’m interpreting the rule correctly... Thanks again for such an awesome and reliable channel! Can’t wait to see what videos you’ve got coming up :-D
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
Hmm, well I was playing from the original DLP rulebook and it seemed to state that you only had to plan money when it was onto an extension board that had money as a cost to activate (to get resources, or the one that lets you spend money instead of food for movement). I think I am playing this correctly, but I suppose it's also possible this has been clarified/changed with the new Renegade version. I know they worked on making the rulebook easier to use than the original.

Yeah, and you could totally be right. I've read that section so many times trying to understand it -- and have been on the forums -- it just still seems a little unclear. But I appreciate you taking the time to respond! Can't wait to watch your Outlive video. Thanks again!

Hey, thanks for all your videos. On this one you have a pretty relevant rules mistake though. From the rule book p. 9: 'You may neither have more than one extension of the same kind nor acquire the extension that shows the same action as your role tile!'

Cool game, nice to see how it plays vs. Orleans. You ended the game too soon though! The rules say you finish the round where you trigger the end game (1 location is empty or you can't refill an empty extension), then you play one more round.
@scotfree2932
@scotfree2932 6 лет назад
At the end of the last round you finished in the video would be the first time you would end up being unable to refill an empty space, which means there should be one more round afterwards. On the previous round, you did refill the empty space with the last extension, which didn't trigger the game end.
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
Yep you are totally right. After I wrote the first comment I realized I wasn't so sure anymore and deleted it until I could read the rules again myself. It does look like I should have played one more full round, but for the sake of a very long video I think I'm ok with it ending there :P I'm adding a note now, thanks for catching this!
@clumsydad7158

I still kinda feel like the theme is a bit thin in this game. The modular boards are interesting but at the same time everything feels on its own/not unified. I'm also not a fan of games that are very heavy into resource conversion, for me it is kind of a chore. And warehousing is fine, but again, not a big thrill I guess. Again, excellent job explaining the game!
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
Yeah this theme is SUPER thing, but fortunately I almost never care about that. This game is almost 100% resource conversion honestly, so it's possible this one won't be your style.
@CameraMan9258
@CameraMan9258 6 лет назад
Hey when the extension deck is over are you supposed to play 1 more round without a full extension strip? I think you are supposed to because the rules say: "The end of the game is triggered as soon as all tiles and cards on at least one location are used up (e.g., no fish and no boats left at the harbor, or no corn on the road) and/or an empty space at the extension strip can’t be refilled any more. If this occurs, the current round is completed and then one more complete round is played."
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
Yep, the game should have gone on one further round. I have already added in Klingon subtitles to explain the mistake.

Jon, update here... Exchanged msg with Reiner Stockhausen and his editor (Stefan Malz) just posted a shorter intro variant on our BGG forum (boardgamegeek.com/thread/1890130/shorter-introductory-variant-proposed-games-editor/page/2). The game does get faster 2nd time you play it so the variant is just meant to better welcome new players to the game system.

At 1:02:11, should the money spent have gone back to the supply instead of into the discard? I think when we played it, money always went back to the supply, even for actions that used it as a planned resource.
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
ah HA! Good catch, yes this absolutely should go back into the supply. Later in the video when pulling tokens I pulled a money out of the bag and was super confused. I of course re-shot that bit once I put the money where it was supposed to go but now I know how it got in there!

It looks like we might really like this. A friend in our game group has Orleans, which I always enjoy a lot, but it's 4 players (we haven't found the 5th player expansion) and we're often with 5. Additionally; the gamestyle in Altiplano seems different enough to warrant adding to the collection. One of the major differences seems that there is an almost non-existing amount of blocking in this game, whereas in Orleans, you're constantly in eachother's way, mostly in the sense of taking away resources and snatching building places on the map. While neither game is conflict heavy, I do tend to prefer the Altiplano way where everyone of kind of working to synergize their own engine and there's less pressure to do something else in a less optimal order because you need to get there first to even get the bonus. Shame I didn't know about this a few weeks ago in Essen. I'll keep an eye out for this one though.

Thanks for this video, Jon. Your audio seems strangely clipped and sometimes I have trouble understanding your words. Could that be noise-cancelling at a too high setting?
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
I do use noise-cancellation to reduce some of the room echo, sorry if that has made it hard for you to understand. I haven't heard this complaint before but I will try to keep it in mind.

Good vid.... As is Altiplano is a 6 for me, while Orleans is a 9. Altiplano is too long and too solitaire indeed. Before I sell my copy I want to try an extreme version in which I remove a couple of extension tiles, remove a couple of tokens of each good and perhaps even give 2 carts for each player at the start... This may need some calibration but I am hoping this will speed up decisions, speed up the game and increase interaction... Or perhaps it will destroy the game... lets see... Any thoughts? Cheers RESPONDER

My biggest issue with teh game right now is it's length, so lowering the end game conditions sounds like a reasonable variant to try out.

Updated opinion (after hating game ater play 1): Played 3rd time with same fast player... We removed 3 extension tiles and started game with 2 carts each. We were playing pretty fast so closer to end we actually felt we needed those 3 extra rounds to be able to accomplish all we wanted so we put the removed tiles back. So full game (no setup) took 75min, much better than before. So this is my verdict... The game gets exponentially faster if everybody knows the game, but an AP prone player or a beginner will always cause a great impact. So although 75min for a 2 player is reasonable, the game would greatly benefit from an introductory/shorter variant so it does not scare new players away. To that I still believe removing 3 extension tiles is a way, but fewer rounds will need to be compensated by giving players more resources upfront so they can accomplish things faster... I would give a extra cart, a extra food and perhaps two extra resource tokens to each player (perhaps doing a draft counter clockwise). That is my opinion...
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
This is great info, thanks for letting me know how that panned out. I think it's ok if a player isn't able to get all their plans done by the end of the game, though I have yet to see even in the full game a player get even close to filling their wharehouse. I don't think I'll be playing with your variant, at least not before I review the game, but it's good to know that it worked out ok.

Hi Jon. What did you like more, this or Yokohama?
@JonGetsGames

Hmm, tough question since the games are SO different. If I had to make a pick right now after 3 plays of Altiplano I think Yokohama has abit of an edge but they really do scratch different itches.

You don't need carts to move, but without them you can only move to an adjacent island. Carts juts let you move to anywhere instead.

As rules indicate, you can't use the two same types of extensions. On 33:19 you have One Harbor from the initial player and you took another as an extension. This is not correct! Rules: Important: You may neither have more than one extension of the same kind nor acquire the extension that shows the same action as your role tile!
@JonGetsGames
@JonGetsGames 6 лет назад
You are allowed to have more than 1 extension in the same area on your board, what that rule means is you can't have two of the same exact extension or have an extension that does exactly what your role tile does.
