Alton Towers: The Story of Britain’s Biggest Theme Park 

Alton Towers began its life as a theme park in 1980, but has a history dating back for centuries. Originally the home of the Earl’s of Shrewsbury it was transformed into Britain’s first ‘theme park’ by John Broome. Uncover the history of this world class theme park and learn how it became the resort we know today.
The transformation was kick started by the installation of the Corkscrew and was followed by iconic attractions The Beast, Black Hole, Grand Canyon Rapids and Around the World in Eight Days.
The takeover by Tussauds ushered in a new era of expansion in the 1990’s with the installation of Runaway Mine Train, Haunted House, Nemesis and Oblivion. Following some lacklustre investments the park began installing more iconic rides such like The Smiler and Wicker Man and looks ready to invest further in the future of the resort.
