I was able to increase the lifetime of my Lone Peak 4 with a simple hack: when the lateral mesh would tear up, I would seal the hole with some thread and then apply some Seamgrip (a glue that is commonly used to fix tents) to seal the area. That was effective for some time but they eventually died after ~ 800 km when the mesh started dismantling from the midsole.

Pro tip! Good idea. I've been considering putting some tenacious tape on the inside of that area to prevent ripping. Thanks for watching!

Just bought the yellow pair, putting them to the test this weekend in Colorado! Also if you call altra they have a 500 mile warranty on all shoes and you just send that pair in then get a new one on them!

Nice! I actually did get a replacement pair of Escalante's from Altra under warranty before. Unfortunately the same wear pattern happened again at 300 miles. These lone peak 5.0's are still hanging in there though. Time will tell! Thanks for watching enjoy the shoes!

I've owned 6 pairs of the Lone Peak 3.5's over the years and was about to move to the Timp's or possibly the Olympus', due to the relatively low durability of the Lone Peak's 3.5. With the addition of the new EGO midsole, I will give the Lone Peak 5 a whirl and see how the durability holds up in comparison to my very old 3.5 models. Thanks again for the thorough and informative review, appreciate it.

I just picked up a pair of these in the the extra wide (4E) size, which I think might be a new option on LP5 (my first ever pair of Altras) and they fit my "Fred Flinstone" feet perfectly :) I wish they offered the 4E option on their road shoes because I'd definitely buy a pair of those too. I tried a pair of Altra Superiors in regular size 11 a few months ago and they felt way too narrow for my feet so I haven't even bothered to try any of their other regular size shoes.

I added trails last year to my running. I'm not sure if it's because the trails I ran aren't that technical, but I ran them in my normal Mizuno road shoes. I was thinking of making an investment into trail shoes since I really enjoyed the trails (more than the road). Thanks for the video
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 года назад
Nothing wrong with that! If they're working stick with them! I'd only upgrade to a trail shoe if you find lack of traction on steeper/wet sections or find that durability of your road shoe is wearing out fast. Typically trail shoes have a more durable upper. Thanks for watching!

Since everyone always talks about how a person might need to transition before hopping into a zero drop shoe, why doesn’t Altra make that transition shoe? I get it, they currently only make a zero drop shoe and that’s their thing, but why not have a 4mm drop Altra Transition or something like that? There’s a lot of people curious about the brand who are instantly turned away otherwise.
@ChaseTheSummit

@ContentsMayDiffer
@ContentsMayDiffer 3 года назад
@@plain-bagel No, I have not. It really depends on the conditions you use the shoes in. I live in Western Norway where it rains 200+ days a year and Inov-8 might have "the world's toughest grip", but they do not have the world's best grip. I have had the Terraultra G270 for a while now and they really excel on gravel roads and dry trails, but I have had some spectacular slips and tumbles with them on wet rock. For those conditions I still prefer the LP's and the King MT2. People I have talked to recommend the Roclite G 275, but I think I will stick to LP's and MT2's for a while. I really like zero drop shoes.

Have you thought about trying out the new Lone Peak in the Wide width so you don't blow out the upper by your 5th metatarsal head like you have on every previous Lone Peak? A shoe fitter who knew plenty about running shoes and the fit would suggest you try it out to see if that will stop the problem.

I've been super curious about altra trail shoes lately. My trail rotation is the saucony mad river tr and the saucony peregrine 10, both 4mm drop, so not too far off. The mad rivers have a beautiful amount of comfy room throughout the shoe and is the most comfortable shoe I have ever put my foot in (I have the version 1). This is what made me start to look at altra trail shoes, as they are known for that wide toe box and "roomy" fit. The durability issues you experience makes me weary though. My mad rivers have at least 400 miles on them, have a ton of life left and they are better than when they were new. The peregrine's have maybe 100 on them, but are wearing like a tank, they still look like they came out of the box, including the outsole!

I have about 100 miles on the LP 5.0 and they've been awesome so far. The Ego midsole is really holding up, just like on the Escalante. Now Altra needs to ditch the flipper, address the area that seems to blow out for a lot of people, use a slightly stiffer/more resilient outsole and bring back the old WIDE toe box. It would be the perfect Lone Peak for many people. Then.... They would change it :-(

@sevegarza

If everyone wore foot shaped shoes (or no shoes at all) when they were growing up, then everyone would have normal shaped feet. The problem is that all of us have been wearing shoes that crush our toes together when we were kids so our feet grow like that and stay like that when we are adults. So unfortunately normal shaped feet are actually very rare to have. Altra shoes are made for normal shaped feet. I have close to normal shaped feet I think possibly because growing up my dad would always get shoes a size or two bigger than my true size was so we would save money on shoes. I also did a lot of martial arts so I was was doing lot of barefoot training. So all my toes grew with normal toe splay except for my pinky toe because even sized up shoes were still pretty narrow. My pinky toes are my only toes that rub against the side of the shoe and the toe next to it. Altra shoes (and Lems) are the only shoes I can wear that won't cause me to develop calluses on my pinky toes.

The specs on this shoe has me excited...BUT... I tried the Torin Plush 4.5's and they were slightly too narrow and the material that breaks across my big to was really uncomfortable. The Timp 1.5's that I have came apart at the seams on both shoes after 150 miles (and they weren't gnarly miles). So, my latest experience with Altra's haven't been great with fit and durability. Have you noticed this? How do the new Lone Peak's compare? Great video! Thanks for publishing it so quickly after the release of the shoe.

My first pair of LPs were the 4.0s and they made me an Altra convert (love the Torin for a road shoe). However, the LP 4.5s had a horrible heel-rubbing problem and I had to return them. It was painful enough to be an absolute deal-breaker for me, and I saw a number of other reviews that mentioned the same thing. Ended up picking up another pair of 4.0s to hold me over. You mentioned less padding around the heel area of the 5.0s - would you say these are more similar to the 4.0s or the 4.5s in terms of the heel fit?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 года назад
The heel fit is very similar to the 4.5's. It seems like the padding is just easier to compress and not actually thinner if that makes sense? So I'm able to get a more secure fit around my ankle/heel. For me, it's a good thing and I'm not getting any chafe/rubbing. Hope that helps!

The canvas above the toe was digging down into my foot (where foot becomes toes) and then would pop back. Tired 3 different sizes - 1 up and 1 down - same for each. Did anyone else have that? @ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 года назад
These actually still have a decent stack height at 25mm so there's substantial cushion and a rockplate to take up anything pointy. The Zero Drop relates to the difference in height from your heel to your forefoot. In typical running shoes the heel is usually elevated above the forefoot by 4-10mm depending on the model. In Altra shoes the heel and forefoot are on the same plane. Theoretically mimicking how humans were meant to run which is supposed to lead to less injury. How true is that? I'm not sure. But I do like the zero drop platform. Thanks for watching!

you say, after 500km (300miles), the 4.5 gets worn out / get torn on the outside? do they tear further? it seems to me pretty early to get broken at that spot. how long does the sole last approximately? I use Salewa Lite Train shoes with a Michelin sole. the studs last about 800km. the damages like you have at the Altra 4.5 start at about 1200km. but the fabric does not tear on so fast. so they last with some holes for about 1500 to 2000km with a flat sole. how does the Altra compare? in terms of price, you get in germany the Salewa shoe for 50 to 100 Eur. it is not the best shoe, but a good value actually.

Saying it feels like they tightened up the heel and midfoot, have you tried these on any side hills? I bought a pair (I forget the model, 3.5 maybe) for an ultra in the mountains and I HATED them. My foot kept rolling and sliding into the corner / side of the shoe rather than the shoe fitting tight and running on the edge of it. They're definitely tighter fitting than the 3.5. The 3.5 had a bunch of padding around the heel cup (I still have a pair). These are still generally pretty wide shoes so if you have a narrow foot it might be too loose but I get no slip even on uneven trails. Thanks for watching!

I never tried the 3.5 but found the 4 and 4.5 to have similar stability issues with side-hilling and in technical rocky, rooty terrain. It wasn't about fit for me since i have a wide foot. It's that the shoes don't have enough structure to them with their ultra-flexible upper which does not hold the foot securely & so leads to sliding into the corner, combined with the ultra-flexible midsole which gets wobbly on uneven terrain, made them feel downright dangerous to me. I can't take them seriously as a mountain shoe because of this. Not trying to roll an ankle here. It's good to hear the 5s may be better about this but my optimism is cautious. If these don't work out, i'll have to find another brand. Topo, maybe. Saucony also has low drop trail shoes.
