You said it all : the all weather are pretty heavy. It's hard to forget them during your run and the laces are terrible: I constantly have to stop because even with a double knot they don't stay in place, this is annoying. However, it often rains where I live and despite their flaws I appreciate running with them in the wet mud and the small puddles. They are very comfortable and I feel that my feet are well protected even in rocky path. Thanks for your great review man..

I tried the On Running Cloudventure (2021) both in the regular version and the waterproof. The regular version is a perfect fit for me, super comfortable. But the waterproof version feels noticeably tighter, especially in the forefoot and toe box, and much less comfortable in the fit. The waterproof version also feels stiffer and possibly heavier.

Nice comparison video. I'll keep the All Weather's in mind for next winter when it's a sloppy mess out there for 3 months. And for the Lone Peak 5s, that might be nice to have a shoe that runs a little larger for late stages of longer races when your feet are swollen. Great stuff!

Thanks Nathan! That sounds like a good plan! I went for another run in them Saturday, and my toes thanked me for the extra space on the downhill.

@@TDMiller I am coming from 6mm stacked Merrells so I chose the one with the least stack hight and cushioning. I still needed to remove the inner footbed to get better ground feeling and less "soft" bounce. Feels amazing though. Didn't know I needed an Altra. Your videos helped me to take the plunge. Cheers!

I grabbed the lone peak 5 as a hiking shoe and found them to be absolutely dangerous in wet conditions. Zero grip on semi-smooth surfaces. Especially walking with a ack and a leashed up pup. Aside from the lack of grip they are a great shoe that runs a bit larger than expected. Just my two cents.

Thanks Alexander! I love hearing everyone's thoughts on the shoes I review. And I completely agree with your two points! Altra and wet surfaces don't go well together, unless when they use Vibram outsoles.

Great review...perfect for what I needed...thank you! Subscribed. Deciding between the all-weather and non. Have been in LaSpo's for a few years since I had the LP version 2 so anxious to see the new version. Now just need to decide which version.

Thanks Joshua! I appreciate every sub and comment! It really just depends on what kind of weather you'll be running/hiking in and how much you dislike wet&cold feet. I made this comparison a few months ago, and have slowly improved my on-camera skills since. I may need to upgrade it one of these weeks, now that the winter is coming again. I'd really only use the all-weather in freezing & snowy conditions, or when I'm walking a lot in the cold & wet. The regular is perfect for trail running, even when it gets slightly colder or wet. The shoes allow any water that comes in to simply drain out without any problems whatsoever. Plus, the regular is significantly lighter and more breathable, which you'd appreciate on your runs. Let me know what you decide! ps. the Lone Peak 6 is rumoured to be released in spring 2022, so I won't be surprised if the 5s go on offer any time soon.

@@TDMiller stellar information all around...thanks! Going into Winter I usually do prefer a waterproof shoe in my collection, but without it having gaiter attachments and the extra weight, I may opt to the non. Besides I can throw on a set of Seal Skinz if really needed. Looking forward to more episodes...well done!

@@TDMiller is it usally the start of winter they go on sale? my lone peaks 3.5s have just died and I need to buy a new pair. Not sure I can wait a few month but if there will be a sale before long I'll wait. Also have you tried the All WTHR boots? If so how where they? Debating between the low and mid heels
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 2 года назад
Hey Scanjet! I'm pretty sure you'd be able to find the LP5 on offer somewhere around this time of year. At least here in Europe, most webshops are trying to sell them at discounted prices. And I'm sure there will be black Friday deals shortly. I'm afraid I haven't tried the all weather boots. If I was a hiker, I'd go for the boots, as they provide more stability for the ankles and they'd prevent rain and snow to get in. The low are better for running IMHO. Let me know if you have any further questions 😊

I wear 12.5 in both styles. I guess I’m lucky, really! Thanks. Having two pair of LPs, I wanted something for the winter. Typically my feet sweat in waterproof shoes, making them cold in the winter so I hope they’ll be good.

This isn't the first time we've noticed that Altra's sizing is a joke. The first time I raced in an Altra Torin 2.5 it was size 41 (US8). I bought after Lone Peak 3.0 size 42 (US8.5). I also tried in store the Superior 3.5 and it needed size 43 (US9) or the Escalante 1.0 and it needed size 40 (US7.5)!! I find it is now a risk to buy Altra online without trying. I took a risk buying the Rivera in size 41 (US8) but luckily they are perfect. Do you have the Torin 4.5 Plush the same size as the Rivera? We are again lockdown in France and I can't try in a store. I would also like to try Superior 4.5s but I don't know what size.
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 года назад
Thanks for the heads-up, Thierry! I like my running shoes large, and I tend to get them half a size too big anyway, because I hate stubbing my toes and my toes always turn black otherwise. All my Altra's are 44.5 (US10.5) and I always liked that size, although I could go half a size smaller and still save my toenails. The Escalante and Torin 4.5 Plush feel good with 44.5 (I'd also take a 44) The Rivera feels a little tighter around the forefoot, and the footbed is more shallow than the Escalante and Torin Plush, meaning my toes rub up against the upper. Size 44.5 is good, and I would not go for anything smaller due to the upper. Making the shoe shorter would make it worse IMHO. The LP All-wthr feels good in 44.5, but similarly to the Escalante and Torin Plush, I'd also take a 44 The LP5, feels a lot larger and has a deeper footbed than the Torin Plush, Escalante and Rivera, so I'd definitely would recommend a size or half a size smaller and it will not affect my toes rubbing against the upper. Hope this helps?

@@TDMiller Thanks Tim. I think we agree that the sizes at Altra are not the same. Seems like every designer has specific molds for each of the shoes. I wear size 40 city, but I use running shoes in size 41. There are only size 40 or 42 in store for the Torin Plush. I think I'll wait. Thank you for your review.

Hi TD thx for the video and mentioning about the size. I just tried on the LP 6 in US 10 and find them smaller than my Paradigm 6 in a US 10 and the LP in US 11 to big now the problem is I want the All Weather but have to order them online but if the sizes are not the same then it would be an impossible task. Altra really have to fix their size issues.

@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 года назад
Hey Jonas! I compared the inner sole, and the LP5 is longer, however if I compare the shoes by look & feel, they seem more similar. I'd still recommend getting the LP5 in one or half a size smaller. I may make a comparison video with the Torin 4.5 Plush to show the difference in shape.

Hey, I just got the lone peak 5 all weather, did my first run in it, 12k on a very flat dirt trail and got my 2nd finger purple afterwards, it just kept hitting the front of the shoe, I think it's because of the laces, worst laces I ever seen, how do you lockdown properly with that shoe ? Should I drill 2 more holes in the top (since there's only 4 shoelace eyelets) and tie it like that? It makes me mad because it's the only shoe I have never felt knee pain in but it destroys my toes and the upper of the shoe felt like a brick, plastic is way too hard (maybe it will soften after some runs).
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 2 года назад
Hmm, that sounds painful. How much room do you have from your big toe to the end of the shoe? Or do you have plenty of space and you slip forward? They're pretty heavy and hard, so they can be pretty unforgiving. Before you drill any holes, try using other laces (for example Salomon Quicklaces or just from another pair of shoes) or skip the bottom eyelets. That could alter the fit a little bit.
@OZSA87
@OZSA87 2 года назад
@@TDMiller there's enough space when I put it on but after running like 4-5k, I guess my feet slides forward, I don't really get how these laces are supposed to lock the feet down, I wasn't even going downhill just a few meters.

Is the all weather still breathable? or do you get sweaty feet fast.
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 года назад
Hi Lamono, in my experience they are quite breathable and keep water out as well. However, because of the waterproof layers, they aren't as breathable as the regular Lone Peak. I used them mainly in cold and snowy terrain and they kept my feet warm and dry, but they are quite heavy, so definitely not a daily trainer IMHO.
@Chupabrah
@Chupabrah Год назад
Do you still recommend the all-wthr vs the new line?
@TDMiller
@TDMiller Год назад
I think it completely depends on how comfortable you are in wet and cold weather. I rarely wear mine anymore, because I only wear them in really wet and cold conditions. The regular LP is actually fine for winter running, but you'll have to be OK with getting your feet wet and cold. The All-wthr is significantly heavier and bulkier, so the benefits may not outweigh the drawbacks.

Got now the Rivera but walking around in it.. Afraid to run... When walking they feel bouncy and I feel strange... Will need to try them on a short run. They are very soft so I don't see them for gravel roads. It will shred my metatarsals..

@TDMiller 3 года назад
Wow, really that bad? I guess I'm used to bouncy shoes 😅 I actually use them mostly on asphalt and even easy non-technical trails without a problem. Gravel stones may get stuck in the exposed midsole. 😕

I ran this morning on a track surface with the Rivera at a slow pace. I was pleasantly surprised with the general protection of the sole on a surface with dirt, gravel, no problems to report. Maybe sometimes a little bit of grip would have been welcome.

What do you prefer out of the timp 2s and lone peak 5s and why?
@TDMiller
@TDMiller 3 года назад
Hi Bilal, great question! My first impression: The Timp 2 feel great & cushioned for long runs, they are lightweight (280g) compared to the LP5 (305g) and provide sufficient protection on the trails. However the LP5 have more protection around the toes and a rockplate in the sole. Both the widths fit nicely IMHO. However I'm a little frustrated with the LP5 length, as it is obviously larger than the Timp2 in the same size. I'm going to try to replace my Lone Peak 5 with a smaller size. I'll need to run a few more times in them to decide if I'll run my upcoming marathon in either the Timp or LP. I'll be creating an in-depth video shortly! Thanks for your question.
