Nice basic demo. Note, you can get eutectic and silver solder rods that are far stronger if you need them to be. Up to 75ksi. Just note, you want to degrease aluminum before welding, and use a stainless steel brush for cleaning, and don't use it for anything else. What was done here is fine for light duty brazing, however if you are looking for something that will be higher load bearing, or need a better 'weld', then you need to do a bit more prep work.

Update these rods will seal a hole in the high side of a Ford Explorer auxiliary unit, With vigorous cleaning and prep.
@DoctorDiz
@DoctorDiz 9 месяцев назад
@SVTFordxx it will work, especially if you prep well. If you think about the big picture of aluminum brazing, you want the surfaces to be as "clean" as possible to get the most adhesion. So if it were greasy, slightly painted, etc. you don't have the ideal surface. With a good prep the rods used in this video have a strength of 33,000 psi (ie. 33kpsi).

Its actually very simple but it does require some practice. What this video didn't show was me melting the aluminum the first try haha Timing is key because these rods melt between 720-750 degrees F and aluminum melts at 1,200 degrees. Very nice job on that aluminum. I have an aluminum table project. The wind was powerful and pulled apart our aluminum patio table after it took our umbrella from the center. It seems to be a thicker aluminum and was wondering if the smaller Bernzomatic mapp and oxygen torch kit would be good for this or if it would be too much and too hot for this job or should I just use a mapp gas rose bud heating torch?? I have both torches to choose from. Thanks for your help and advice. My first time brazing. I usually weld everything but I'm not set up for aluminum with the mig so having to try my hand at brazing.

Haha thank you! I hear you on that one. Been seeing aluminum coils in the newer units these days & was wondering how to fix a leak myself. These rods melt between 720 & 750 degrees & aluminum melts at 1,200 degrees so the amount of heat applied is critical because you WILL def burn right through that aluminum. The thickness of the aluminum will play a large role. Thanks again! This was fun to do & you can work on many interesting projects on the side with this. Enjoy your weekend

Garret Gartner, have you taken any frame building courses, or welding/brazing? The material you choose to build with will decide how you join the tubes together. I have an aluminum trike that has its tubes glued into lugs. ALAN built bikes in the seventies using the same technique. Fillet-brazed light steel alloy 531 and 753 were all the rage before aluminum and unrecyleable CF. Good luck anyway.

A beginner's question: I have an aluminum car rim with a small crack in it. (the crack is not in the face or bead of the rim but in the valley). I tried the same rods as in the video but was using propane with the standard torch size (.5 inch?) and was never able to get the rim to temperature. I bought some aluminum brazing rods braze cracked cast aluminum that is 1/8” thick, and approximately 8” long. Unfortunately i ground a V- Grooves on both sides to prep it, but realized that when i go to braze the second side, the heat will loosen the first side. I’m thinking to grind the grooves thru just enough to put a damn on one side so the aluminum rod can then flow thru to the other side, then just finish filling the groove. Will this work? If not could you please let me know if you have a better idea?

I'm an excellent steal welder, I have not welded aluminum yet and really want to try this! I am really good with science and can't see how Flux would be nessisary with how soft aluminum is because the bond would be made instantly unlike welding steal because the metal is so hard. I am really curious of the rigidty when melted together. I was told my affordable Canadian tire welder was a beginners welder! What a crock of shit that was, it did a 2000 wrangler body and cab frame rails with no problem minus the serperate body frame where I had to use arc because of the metal thickness! (Unrelated) Its the people welding that makes this all work and the honesty of the products! $225 welder with alot of time put on it and still working just fine. @@superciliousdudeYou're very welcome but thank YOU for your feedback🙏 Its def a great option! Its fast,simple & easy. I'm really not sure about the HH0 torch but that would be good to experiment. Just need to be careful and not burn right through the aluminum. The rod melts between 720-750 degrees Farenheit but aluminum melts at 1,200 degrees Farenheit so the amount of heat applied is critical. Thickness of the aluminum plays a large role

This is just soldering, it isn't welding. Welding is taking two things and fusing them to one solid thing. Soldering/brazing is just gluing them together.

For this video I used map gas. I would use either map gas or propane which you can pick up at your local home depot or lowes. Thanks for watching & stay tuned for new videos every week🔧⚡️
