Great job! You’re absolutely correct about charging your normal hourly rate while cleaning. I do the same for cleaning, disassembly, reassembly and painting. I’ve shared with customers that they can save some money in these areas by doing it themselves or by having an employee do it but if they’re willing to pay me 4to5 times more to do it, I’m happy to accommodate them.
We're required to clean whatever we're working on for contamination control. Some customers bring their equipment in in really bad shape and we spend many hours cleaning them and they get sticker shock when the bill is due. Some finally started bringing stuff in cleaned but others haven't.
I've done the same with informing customers about the time/cost of cleaning, it's 50/50 on them doing it. Some are surprised that cleaning is part of the preparation, and the prep time can take longer than the actual repair occasionally. On a different note, how do you like the Tifco bits?
I don't think people appreciate the skill and experience you bring to the job. You are part machinist, part engineer, part designer, and a welder all rolled into one. Thank you for taking the time to video your work.
I watch these videos and think "I probably chose the wrong profession" I've been a woodworker since highschool, and went in to high end yacht carpentry. Recently I took a break to work as a welder for almost a year. Now I can't stop watching videos like this.
Great repair I worked with Aluminum on airplanes for a few years and yes Aluminum holds heat for a long while especially as thick as you were using. Like you said can’t tell there was a repair even done on the piece except the new paint. Nice pup you have there he’s protecting his dad while he worked. 👍 🇺🇸🇺🇸
*On Fire Welding* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. What a pain in the ass for a Sunday, everything is always a fire drill. Peace & Grace.
Well I guess this is the Joy's of owning a company and keeping your customers happy . Great little video showcasing your skills and versatility in most things metal . Made a nice brunch video to watch . Something different each time many thanks
Greg your welding skill is fabulous. That looks better than new. I wish I could get a couple of lessons from you.. Your videos are terrific. Your mix of real time and time lapse is spot on.
Arc captain that’s pretty impressive full boar doing all that work and she never overheated or blown fuse, can’t wait until you can send one downunder, , nice work by the way,
I have always loved those Sunday emergency jobs. My nickname is Mr.Wolf ,joking not joking. Thanks for the content and greetings from the NJ Bayshore. PS I don't understand why you and Isaac at IC Weld don't have 500k subs. Not that Abom could do this job but if so it would be a 5 part (now he calls them episodes) vid.
@@OFW Look I've watched more videos than I care to admit with BS content, what I mean is minute after minute of talking and repeating themselves with various product placement techniques etc. There is absolutely no reason you and Isaac should not be at 500k. The algorithms are a strange beast.
It alway's fascinates me to watch the work you do alot of it could be avoided with 10 or 15 minutes a day with a gress gun, I just wish I had learnt to weld properly when I was working on excavators and heavy machinery instead of getting a different job where I wouldn't need the skills I learnt for years, thank's for another great video and again you get the job done.
well done, and on a Sunday, so I am not the only one who works weekends as well as the week. I tip my hat to you, the only welding I have trouble with is aluminium TIG.
Hi, great job. But I think it will brake soon when the force comes that brake it’s first. Maybe a steel bar upside that stabilizes the whole area where good.
You are a great mechanic for sure. You were saying about maybe your gas coverage was a little issue. Could be some impurities in the pump house casting.
They should put a couple of flat steel plates 3/8" to 1/2" along the top of those mounts, and bolt the box down through those. No more strain on the aluminium and won't break again. A third bolt each side wouldn't hurt either.
I totally agree with changing full rate for cleaning parts for repair. The time spent cleaning could be spent welding, fishing or drinking beer. Of my clients don’t want to pay for my time, they have the option to do the cleaning themselves. I do struggle somewhat with another issue though. I am retired and run my business more as a hobby and I have a friend who likes to tag along to keep occupied. He doesn’t expect any payment but is helpful in a lot of situations and certainly makes me more productive. Is it ethical to charge out his time and at what percentage of my hourly rate? I ask partly because I don’t want to be in a position where I am undercutting others in the area who need the work to earn their living.
I was struggling with my tig machine and gas’s coverage. I don’t do a lot of tig so always think I am doing something wrong. I turned out I had a crack in the gas line just inside the torch handle so I wasn’t getting sufficient flow at the nozzle. I only found it when I had the flow meter turned up way too high for normal use thenI could hear the leak. BYW for my money, Diablo blades are the best bang for the buck on cold cut miter saws.
This may be a silly question, but can you do a video about your daily shop cleaning procedures? How often do you sweep, what kind of vacuum, cleaning shelves/hard to reach places, how frequently, etc.? Great video, ty for showing the closeup of the overlapping welds in the middle of filling out that beveled joint.
Now they're awesome video in the bag for you there man I'm the same way hourly rate for cleaning and prepping anything. Question about the welding of the aluminum I tend to do with the thick aluminum like that a weave instead of going side to side do you think it makes us stronger weld doing the weave over a side-to-side?
I would have thought you would have replaced the whole strip with the bolt holes with thicker plate with customer approval so that the failure did not reoccur. And a gusset at the front of the pump to handle stress cycling better. But maybe the failure is due to the diaphragm pump contents hardening.
Really very good work. What did you use to clean the aluminum, I have never seen an aluminum spray cleaner. Looks like it works very well. You are a master of the trade.
Greg, I’m curious as to why you chose TIG, instead of using a spool gun with aluminum wire? Seems it might have been an easier weld up with a spoolgun, perhaps? Fine repair and interesting process as always….thanks for sharing this video!
@@OFW what’s up with all these arc captain’s never heard of em before but it seems most welders on RU-vid recently got one for some reason. Never had the time to watch the videos of em and investigate though.
Those cheaper collets sometimes can be a little big, which blocks the gas from flowing properly, if you're badly stuck some time you could try putting in a drill and sanding it down a little. Or buy some CK ones lol Nice job btw. Did the Doggy hurt his paw?
My question is do you charge extra for a Sunday call out, I fixed a "On Loan Demo" combine header during the UK harvest it had been damaged and repaired previously. The company sent their fitter out for a warranty job also break down work it was a UK bank holiday they charged £305 per hr as it was a Bank holiday. As I have known the famialy 60 yrs I just charged them my std hr rate also only 2 miles from my house Nice fix on a dirty job
My luna came alive as soon as you showed love to shop pooch looks like a weimaraner? But could be a mix my stafashire loves to watch vids but notices other canine!
Question about the 3M Cubitron II disks. Seems in one of your videos, you said you use the 5" disks. I assume you use the 5" on your 4.5" grinders? I've been to your online Amazon storefront. Do you use the Mercer backing pads w/holes? Do you have specific 3M part numbers for the backing pad & disks you use? Those 3M products are hard to find online. I'ld like to try some, but don't want to get the wrong ones. Really enjoy your videos...doesn't seem to be anything you won't tackle.
Greg, curious what the ProSchmo electrician did to your 3 phase, I have toasted 2 3ph motors on my lathe in the last few months, one I know why, but the other was like brand new...... hope the American Rotary treats you well......I know Fenner and DeeDee and Abom are very happy with theirs....Paul
He installed a static phase converter and it said right on it Minimum hp 8. So about 3 minutes of run time and it burned up my motor. The American Rotary converter is very nice. It’s quite and very easy to install.
@@OFW glad you got the proper setup.....my issue at my shop, was the clown who ran wires, had 3 phase running on 2 breakers, so one lead was out of phase.....got it solved last night....so sorry to hear of the mill motor crashing....best regards Greg....Paul in Florida
Aluminum diaphragm pump got overloaded and busted the base. Judging by the shaft bearing, this will happen again. They need an entirely new type of pump for the application.
