You guys did a great job on this; I really appreciate the attention to detail. I felt like the aluminum neck cut some of the bass response and seemed brighter overall. The differences were slight but I tended to prefer the wood neck. Great stuff as always!

Aesthetically, the EGC has it. As far as clean tone though, I preferred the wooden neck over aluminum. The wooden neck had more body and warmth IMO. The differences are subtle with gain though. Great video, and that delay sounded great.

If your amp is not properly grounded you’ll get a shock no matter what kind of neck you have. I’ve gotten a nice shock from stepping on a metal heating vent...
@FuzzlordEffects
@FuzzlordEffects 4 года назад
@@druariel this! Your strings on almost all guitars are connected to ground in your cable. If you have this and an electrical issue in your amp where you have a live voltage on chassis (death cap scenario for example) you could indeed get schocked. Be safe everyone and check out Uncle Doug's RU-vid channel for a great explanation about the topic of grounding guitar strings and safety. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xS_5K5YEYv8.html

Mid gain and low you can hear the difference quite a bit, Wood has more chime on the hights but more flat and warm overall, egc neck is brighter overall but less chime it seems on the highs. Full on gain though you're pretty much only hearing the actual circuitry of the pedals, any wood differences at that point are pretty much non existant

The distorted and fuzzed tones doesn't really sound any different between the two necks, but the aluminium neck sounds like it has a bit better intonation maybe? In the clean tones though, there is a difference. I like the aluminium neck because it has a very "ethereal" shimmer in the highs! Very cool tone for doom! \m/

The clean tones had substantially less sustain with the aluminum neck for some reason (could just be the differences in the way you hit the strings). A bit brighter too and slightly different resonance with the aluminum neck, which are both aesthetic choices depending on the tone you might be going for but weren't necessarily pleasing to my taste in this case. I see why people who play with always on fuzz and distortion prefer the aluminum neck as it probably makes the guitar growl a little more. Great video and very informative for a what is was! It's hard to make objective tone differences but you got as close as I would've wanted to start forming my opinion about it. I'll need to get my hands on one to really feel the difference too, which I'm guessing is what affects the tone more than anything.

Great video, Jason. Subtle differences, for sure. On some of those riffs, the differences were barely audible - a bit more pronounced on other riffs. The aluminum neck is super cool visually, but overall, I preferred the sound of the original wooden neck. However, in a band mix, I seriously doubt I could hear those subtle differences.

I am an aluminum guitar aficionado - although to paraphrase a great man, I like both kinds of music, country AND western! That said, I think all the comments about sustain, top end, etc. are true re: aluminum necks/neck throughs from my experience (and the video). Here's one thought I haven't heard yet, though: I think the aluminum neck offers better string definition with the heavier fuzz tones. So put that in yer bong with an OM symbol on it & smoke it!

How do the neck profiles and frets compare? I think I can hear a difference in the clean tones, but in-hand, I’m guessing I’d notice more of a difference in the way the necks play, rather than the way the guitar sounds overall. Absolutely love the look of that guitar, by the way. Purple is wildly underrated as an evil guitar color...

One of the problems with this aluminum neck (that I think) is that the high frequencies overpower the mids and the lows (from my ears this is what I hear). Idk if that’s because of your pickups, or possibly the string gauge could have something to do with it. One of the advantages it sounds like the attack is sharp as hell. Wood doesn’t have that as much, depending on the genre you’re playing that could be a massive advantage… I think of John Dwyer from the osees that uses that attack as a main feature in his playing style.

Well done! This is the only way to do this comparison! I will say the entire aluminum Neck to bridge and pick ups all as one is a lot more of a difference for sure. I have the first tyranny and LOVE it. I am waiting on a custom Baritone Scott Kelly Baritone as well. The one thing i wold have liked to have seen is more about harmonics and sustain. The Electrical Guitar Company neck was much less drastic a change verses what I experienced with the old Kramer aluminum neck on the same heavily modified Les Paul Jr clone. The changes I experienced was a bit more energy, much more sustain with a lower level of note volume drop off that is similiar to a Yamaha SG-2000 or SG-3000, an increase to the treble and mid range and open string would need to be muted more often than not. Less overdrive was needed to get the same sound relative to the aluminum verses wood neck. After watching through your video. The string buzz off of the frets was a bit more apparent with the EGC neck, which is something I ran into with my Kramer necks. One head’s up with those aluminum necks that don’t have truss rods, for those that have been converted to dual course necks (a 12-string, or conversely an 8-string bass neck) watch out for string bowing that will occur over time. This happens more frequently with 8-string bass guitars than 12-string guitars. Between the two necks, I preferred the EGC neck.

My guess would be that the aluminum would have more top end than the wood neck. Some of that being the metal the other part being the rosewood, which I find a touch more round and warm. @@killercour You're right. I wrote this comment before watching the comparison. I think the difference could come from the massive difference in weight, it would be interesting to see the same comparison with a heavier wooden neck. Also it's not the same nut on both neckt which could influence the tone.

Man I feel like my ears may not be that great - I listened multiple times with decent headphones and couldn't really tell the difference. Like if I closed my eyes and tried to guess which neck you were playing I'd get it right 50% of the time 😅. I know people like buzzo love the aluminum necks but I'm wondering how much of it is an aesthetic and/or feel thing rather than sound, particularly if you play with a lot of fuzz and distortion. Anyways, that's the sickest looking P60 ever.

mikowl , Buzzo loves the aluminum EGC guitars because they’re not only quality guitars, but they’re much more durable. Buzzo once said something to the effect that what’s the point of touring with a Les Paul when their necks are so fragile. If an EGC falls over you can pick it up and play it. If a Les Paul falls over, it’s neck can be cracked.

Very useful information , as I suspected the aluminum neck gives a brash, defined and tight sound, the " Jesus Lizard effect", the original wooden neck gives a rounder, darker and fatter sound; I personally still prefer the wooden neck, but it' s a matter of fact that the aluminum neck gives benefits in term of definition and tightness of heavy, low sounds!

Interesting video. How do you factor in temperature changes? e.g. hot dry summers and cold winters? (Same as any other guitar I would imagine but with no truss rod?) You're using a standard neck in baritone tuning? Did you have to make any adjustments to factor this into the equation as well? I would imagine the heavier the guitar body, the better, for these bolt on necks?

Originally I assumed that the aluminium would sound brighter... However it's not that simple. To me it sounds like on the aluminium the higher overtones sustain longer... In other words the sustain of the note stays brighter where the sustain of the note on the wooden neck gets darker faster. On some stuff it almost made the wooden one sound brighter because of the contrast of the attack vs sustain. I think that one just might be able to simulate the wooden one on the aluminium one by palm muting the strings very very very slightly (and that would give more tonal options). Oh... I'm watching from Finland.

I did not hear a difference. You Tube, on my phone from Huntsville, AL. The aluminum, I assumed, would sound more metallic, not to be confused with the style. I have been playing piano since I was 4, I am 33 now. I sing mostly, but I have several guitars for when I write. I think the aluminum look awesome, and the weight does not bother me at all. I play Tenor Sax in marching band sooo... Great video, I think I would have liked to have heard riffs I knew and without a pedal. The melodic stuff sounded really pretty. I like that kind of sound... think Rod Stewart’s “People Get Ready” with Jeff Beck playing guitar.

I think there's more that you could do there with the harmonics that are being produced by the aluminum neck, you did run it through a gamut of different pedals that produced different amounts of fuzziness and distortion, maybe if you made the strings looser and went with maybe a drop d tuning?

Interesting results. I have an aluminum robot graves neck on a deluxe tele wired as a Les Paul with lace dirty heshers. I also have a blacktop tele with lace pickups(dissonant aggressors) set up in the same tuning. They are different pickups (although similar) and the wiring is not the same. My aluminum neck seems to have the opposite results of yours. It's way beefier yet tighter. Overall, my experience with the aluminum neck is that everything just seemed bigger and clearer. I was going to sell the original neck but I think I'll throw it back on my next string change and see what happens.

Ooof. That is pretty awful, thanks for the heads up. I've been looking into a couple alternative neck companies, pricing is about the same or a bit higher, but responsive customer service and active instagram page so they seem better (Robot Graves, Hoxey, etc.). Thanks again for the info!@@FuzzlordEffects

After making an effort for minutes.. there's is a difference, but really small, and I don't really know what it is. Maybe it's not a huge change on what frequencies ring, but how the overall curve of frequencies is shaped. I would like to hear an aluminum neck-through body to see if the difference is a bigger one. Anyway keep it up man, I love your videos. Also, there's a lot of debate about those aluminum necks, some people say that they're sh*t because of aluminum being a better thermal conductor than wood, so weather changes are gonna curve the neck more drastically than in a regular wood neck. For those people, I don't really think you could ever see a change in an aluminum neck in all your life, maybe your grandsons will...

Hopefully one day I’ll have one around and can make a comparison between them all! One thing that you just can’t hear in this video is how nice the aluminum neck feels and just how well made it is. Totally interesting piece of gear. Cheers!

Before watching (deliberately avoiding looking at other comments) - I will reply-to-self with my "after watching" thoughts! ---------------------------------- My guess is the predicable guess: I'm guessing the aluminum neck will be much brighter, cleaner, clearer (more articulate), and dazzling, at the risk of possibly coming off as serrated and/or soulless sounding, while the wood neck will be warmer, richer, more nuanced and more soulful, at the risk of sounding dull and muted by comparison. Also, in terms of the degree / intensity of the difference: I'm guessing the difference will be noticeable, but not dramatic - such that watching a side by side comparison in a clean room isolation environment like this, the differences will be obvious, but such that given a blind listen on an album, or especially live, that it'd be hard to detect which one is which and really appreciate a difference. Okay, that's my guess! Now, resuming watch, and will reply-to-self with afterthoughts! ------------------------ p.s. T60! Wow! You don't see too many of those around anymore! I happen to have a T-15! :-)

Post-watch follow-up: So, I'll say I believe that my beforehand guesses were very close to right! I don't think the wood neck sounded dull at all, and I don't really think the aluminum neck sounded soulless or even particularly serrated. Otherwise, I think my guesses were spot-on! Including my guess on the degree or intensity of the difference. The aluminum was brighter and more articulate, where the wood was warmer and more nuanced. I don't think I'd be able to tell what neck was used at all on an album or "blindfolded live show". Overall, I prefer the sound of the wood neck. The aluminum had some interesting resonance, (and looks a thousand times cooler) but for the most part, I didn't really like the attack nearly as much. In fact, the only riff that you played where I think I might've possibly liked the overall sound of the aluminum better was your final riff, clean with delay. If there is one thing that DID surprise me, though: it's that (said as one who is only very fairweather towards hard rock and heavy metal in general), I figured that I'd like the aluminum neck better on the heavy stuff, and less on the clean stuff, when it was, in fact, the exact opposite. On the heavier stuff, the attack was a little too sharp for me as well as also feeling like the uniqueness of the resonance was mostly lost in the distortion. In the cleaner stuff, the attack was more reigned in, and the resonance shone through a lot better. Anyway, that's my take! I'm happy to have been at least very warm on my early guess! Thanks for making this comparison video! As for where I'm listening from, well, it's in the username, but I'm from Des Moines, so, a medium-sized city / metro in the U.S. Midwest, but one that is growing and transforming very rapidly! I'm actually quite a fan of the place - too bad I'm rapidly losing my ability to say the same for all but a few other places in the rest of the state in which it has the misfortune of rising out of. Cheers! 🍻

Aluminum neck sits waaay better in the mix. I have both wood and aluminum neck guitars and I would take aluminum over wood anyday..Better sustain, resonance, no truss rod. But that is bolt on story. Full aluminum guitars are different story, take Nude guitars for example. Really big and tight tone!

How’s the temperature variation affects the tune in the Al neck ?
@wyattonline
@wyattonline 4 года назад
Aluminum has a large (IMO) thermal expansion coefficient. Here's a comment from EGC's website FAQ How does aluminum react to temperature changes? Aluminum expands and contracts more than wood when exposed to different temperatures. These changes are easily resolved by letting the instrument acclimate to the ambient room temperature. Thirty minutes or so usually accomplishes this acclimation.
