Nice trailer and good explanation on why you decided the way you did. Being able to work on the trailer yourself is a huge plus. I think you have been taking it to easy on your intern, her nails look awful nice, not working her hard enough.

I always power wash my steel trailer after hauling cattle. I think it reduces corrosion. Hopefully it’ll last a while.
@jameslee4504
@jameslee4504 3 года назад
With stock trailers it always depends on what you want to do with it. If you’re going to be bouncing through rough pastures steel will hold up much better than aluminum. If all you’ll be putting on it miles on good paved road aluminum works better for that. I say this as a rancher that’s been around both kinda of trailers. My neighbors would all say the same thing. Unfortunately aluminum doesn’t take pasture abuse very well.

@@TheFarmingLife I’m in the Sandhills of Nebraska and even with all the sand some of the pasture roads we have to bounce down get pretty rough. Steel holds up a lot better out in our part of the country

i have a 24' foot that i rebuilt myself and it was a lot of work to do it right. two key things i have done to mine on the repair, was repair the rusted tin/steel out with SS bottom skirt on the inside and found out that horse stall rubber mats work the best on the floor. Also one key thing i do to mine is it gets washed out after every use when we get back. it is easier to clean when it is fresh.
@kill2liveman
@kill2liveman 3 года назад
What we did is that we use bedliner on the sides of the trailer down by the floor and then put some in the wheel wells to help against corrosion

The only differences between the steel vs aluminum trailer we bought was the aluminum trailer was 2000 pounds lighter, and $8,000 dollars more in price. Plus the aluminum trailers have the tendency to crack around the back doors when we are hauling up and down the mountain roads to the summer range

I think that you made the right decision with the steel trailer. Even if you used it 5 days a week steel may rust but you can fix it yourself. You can weld on it to fix it and paint your repair

Aluminum fatigues and can snap off out of nowhere whereas steel would just bend. If you were hauling every day, aluminum would have been a better choice, but you made a good decision based on your use case.
@jasonjohnson9641

Personally I'm not a fan of Aluminum. From what I've worked with if a weld cracks it's more prone to cracking in the future! Steel will hold up better and longer.

Here you generally want to keep them in a shed and boxed in otherwise you tend to get them borrowed permanently by opportunists, a neighbour had his pinched of the back of his truck after he stopped by the farm office to pick up the passports for the cows he was moving came back out went to climb in the truck and realised the trailer was gone

I bit the bullet and purchased an aluminum stock trailer in 2013. Happy so far, but, I would have been just as happy with a steel. I don’t feel it’s a whole lot lighter...pulls kind of heavy I think. Oh well...I’m easily pleased. Enjoy your new trailer. The cows won’t care whether it’s steel or aluminum. 😁😁

I was in the same boat as you last year with my semi. I bought it about 5 years ago, it was an old cheap truck but a great way to get started driving truck (I had no experience either when I started). Did the same thing as you... bough one and learned as I went. After about 4 years, it was really nickel and diming me. I decided to bite the bullet and buy one about 20 years newer, way less miles, and a much nicer cab and options. Not to mention it looked better and drove a LOT better. It was the best decision I made. I got more out of my old truck than I paid for it, so all in all it only cost me about $15k to trade up to a much nicer rig. I know everyone's farming operation and financial priorities are different, but for me it was tough call but I have no regrets whatsoever about the upgrade. Keep up the great videos

Thought question why would you need a 24' trailer for less than 75 cows we had 140/160 cows. We used a 14' then upgraded to a 16' one. Our moves with with cows were anywhere from 6/8 miles the auction marts were 45km to 32km. Not a problem I could understand if you were custom hauling.

I’ve been a trailer mechanic for 5 years now and i can say that if you constantly (and i mean after every use) clean it all out and paint anything that may have a scratch or missing paint, steel will last 15-20 years. However aluminum takes no maintenance and will easily last the same. The best trailer i know of is a Gore horse trailer. Steel frame aluminum body. It’s expensive but I’ve seen 40 year old gore horse trailers selling for the price of new stock trailers just because they hold value so much.

Ryan, early on you said that a new after market hood would cost "twelve fifty". Well I thought that meant 1,250, it was only when you said a used hood might cost 24 hundred that I realised that your your "twelve fifty" was (probably) 12,500. Then at the end you said the new trailer cost "twelve five", well I was fairly sure that was 12,500. I do hate to appear to be nit picking, but the original "twelve fifty" was somewhat vague to this Scotsman.

Oh a good week or 2 ago, i told Travis about my Aluma-Line 30ft. 7.6 inches wide, 3 axel. I would of sold it for $24,400. I sent him a e-mail. Electric over hydraulic brakes. With new copper / stainless brake line in put on it. Others rusted out in 4 years. These are for Life. 3 brand new tires on it, other 3 are half, lets say, Spare, 2 jack stands. I just used it for my own hauling / small farm. I retired from the cattle business. That trailer /steel, looks like a piece of junk already, sorry to say. 17.5 inch wheels, 16 ply tires. Load range H. I overhauled the brakes, when i got done using it in the winter of 2018. Not used since. The rear hinges, 5 of them for the gate, i took pins out, sanded them & anti seize them. Caledonia, MN area. Not that far from you guys.

The old steel trailer seemed to be rusted out at the bottom where manure and urine could get to it. It might be a good investment to have the lower half of the walls and about 6 inches out on the floor, sprayed with bed liner. Especially heavy into the area where the wall meets the floor. Another investment, but still less overall than an aluminum trailer. 😎
@SlipShodBob
@SlipShodBob 3 года назад
I would say whatever suits the farm and application the majority of small trailers here are aluminium but unless you go an expensive route we're limited to generally 3.5ton(ne) that you can pull with the 25ft+ tractor trailers it is more mixed usually though it's aluminium with sheep decks or steel with cattle but you're again limited to about 20ton(ne). HGV lorries and they are all mostly steel or at least steel framed, I would second the washing out when fresh even if it's on the majority of the muck but spending an hour washing out the majority on one panel because a State Vet is sure a stain is actually fresh poop during a disease out break kind of does that to you. Also though who say aluminium doesn't corrode it does it just appears white and powdery.

the guy that moves my live stock, like today, went and picked up 2 cows with calves, his trailer is aluminum, every time he gets stuck there is no place strong enough to hook a chain to, to pull him back words , you have to some how fish a chain under it and hook on to a spring. then the chain is trying to lift the back of the trailer off the ground from the long span from the back to a spring or sling one of the wheels witch then cant turn, it a huge pain, every time, he had the in side hings brake a few times as well as the back door slid and hing side brake, the trailer only 3 years old, but you can wash it and unless you busf it all the time, it looks crappy from the coronation you get on aluminum, like a boat, add in road salt in winter and it looke even worse, he says if he wanted to keep it looking nice he would have to spend hours buffing it after every use

My own preference is aluminum livestock trailer; just like the looks of aluminum compared to the steel trailers; I know looks over being practical? As for corrosion: if you do not clean them out after each use they all will corroded; even the aluminum. Just like using the aluminum grain shovels as a dairy barn gutter shovel; in which they last about a year.
