Always have a backup plan when sailing. In this short sailing video we set up a swell bridle on the South Side of Cat Island, paddle surf some micro waves, and attempt to sail to conception island when our main halyard breaks...

Never go away fast EVER. Especially when you're a little upset. It always gets expensive. There's a tid bit of 62 years of free advice 😊 Maybe it's time for "apart time". Sierra have your friends down for a few days and Billy can go to a near by island and go with some friends. It happens to all the cruisers, which is why they like to bring other people on board occasionally. Hang in you guys. You're made for each other ❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Billy, try making a soft shackle for your main Halyard. There are many configurations that it can be done in, they are usually shorter than a hardware shackle if you plan accordingly, and the best pro is that you can make a new one anytime you need to! 5mm max is all you need (4mm is great too), 6mm Amsteel makes a large and awkward soft shackle in my opinion. That big monster I sent you is made of 6mm, it has its utility uses but I find it too big for most applications in Halyards and Sheets.

The drone video in the first half of this episode is probably the best to date at capturing the beauty of where you are, and the music and soundtrack especially accentuated the beauty of the scene of Sierra paddle boarding.

We made in the 1960's a 3' x 3' 1" Plywood with 40lbs. in lead weights screwed to plywood with a 4 corner attachment leading up to 1 line attached to the Spinnaker Pole 45 degrees off the leeward side called a Flopper Stopper, kills the rocking motion a lot!

We shift our bridle to one bow and the midship cleat. No extra line needed and holds the bows 30 degrees off the wind toward the swell. It is a definite life saver in an off wind swell.

This is a great time to take about making custom halyards with Dyneema core. You can sure buy many lines that already have a Dyneema core ($$$), but it's really nice to splice a custom halyard that really fits your mast and main. I find that using a non-heat annealed core is best for cruisers, less expensive and doesn't harden up so much that it kinks around the winch. Racers like to use the heat annealed core for very low stretch. You can use a combo where the working end for the winch is regular Amsteel of a larger diameter with a Technora/Poly blend cover that gives great grip around the winch and in the clutch. Just after the working end enters the mast (with Main fully up) is where you splice in the heat annealed section that will terminate to a soft shackle. You can use a smaller diameter core here, like 5 mm, and you can choose to cover it with a less expensive poly cover just for UV protection or leave it bare so it's a tapered line. This part of the halyard lives inside the mast most of the time, but when the mainsail is doused that part is exposed so keep that in mind. Why is this sometimes CHEAPER than buying a new fully covered line? Often times you'll find end-spool cuts and left-overs on the remnants rack of you local Chandlery at deep discounts. These pieces won't be long enough (30 to 40 feet) to use as a single line, but splice together sections of the line type you need with custom cover as appropriate and Voila! Nice custom Halyards for your rig that are double the strength and much lower stretch than standard Sta-Set lines. #SeaMonsterStrong

I've been to conception. It's a small island famous for its bird rookery and green turtle action. Many green turtles are born here. Fun stuff you guys are lucky I wish I was back there, great place to go permit fishing. I don't think I could ever be mad at Sierra, she could turn an inboard into an outboard and I wouldn't even care. Hopefully it wasn't stainless steel prop....

Oh, and I almost forgot... if your Main Halyard breaks at the shackle it usually breaks at the knot. Why? Because knots tied in any type of line typically reduce the ultimate line breaking strength by 50%! The correct splices typically retain 100% of the lines MBL. Food for thought.

Great video !!! Which cruising guide/ chart book are you using for the Bahamas ? How much solar do you have ( watts)? And does that cover all your electrical needs? Such as refrigerator and Engel freezer, anchor lights, pumps, interior needs. Or do you need to supplement with engine/alternator or Honda generator ? Any and all advice is appreciated. I’ve been following you for 3-4 years and after hurricane season I’m leaving KW and heading to the VI via the Bahamas on my Pearson33-2. Thanks again!

Rubs off the bottom paint? Two things then, the paint doesn't have good adherence to the boat, the primer and the paint don't like each other or there was wax and neither the primer or the paint will stick! Next haul out use denatured alcohol to take all the wax off and get the hull ready for primer and paint!
