This movie is based on a novel (same title) written by my favorite author Walter Mosely. Starring Laurence Fishburne. This movie shows how big a difference a man can make in the lives of others, even when he has very little to offer. Enjoy

Bought this movie from a video shop in 1998 for $3 cause it wasn't renting well. Whole family watched it and it is a family favorite! We say quotes from the movie and it also taught us to "never give up" to "be humble" and not to judge people because we don't know their circumstance. Lost the video tape in the floods but happy to come back here to watch it - over and over again. Thank you!🙂

When my parents got divorced my mom moved us into the hood because it was the only place she could afford. I felt very lonely and keep my thoughts to myself. There was a nice African American man who would always be kind to my brother and me. I think he could tell I was a bit lost. Eventually my mom re married and we moved out but I always remember how the man would say hi and talk shop with us just to make us feel more welcomed. This movie made me remember how some people are good and kind hearted with no one realizing it.

What I like about this movie is it’s REALNESS, and the story that it tells. There are a lot of people out there, living hard lives, day to day, just like Socrates. And despite of how hard ones life may be… If you remain strong willed...You can and WILL SURVIVE!! Excellent movie!!

That's one thing new movies, mostly since 2000, are missing today. That, and CGI took the reality if life away, nothing but something created on a computer, Actors in front of a green wall. J think that's one reason actors today aren't as good, they don't feel the scene, they can't see the scene to be part of it. Movies in the 70's and 80's, especially the 80's, were much better. Made for TV are better than this woke box office crap today. They worry about what color, country, gender the actors are from instead of who's got talent. I don't go to movies to see that, I can see all that at Walmart. I love seeing the old rides in these movies. I'd like to have that suburban they. Was hanging around.

Even though the kid was not his, I am glad that Soco took it upon himself to become his guide because he did not want him to become a statistic. By helping him, he was also helping himself.

This film was made from the book written by Walter Mosley. I own more than twenty of Mosley’s books. I’ve read each of his books at least two or three times. The brother can write. It’s incredulous for me when most black folks don’t know who he is. Most of us have heard of, or seen the movie: The Devil in the Blue Dress, starring Denzel. Again, most of us are unaware that film was also based on one of Mosley’s books. In my humble opinion, Mosley is one of America’s greatest writers.

. Whatever one’s position, everyone in this Age of Kali needs to be enlightened in Kṛṣṇa (God) consciousness. That is the greatest need of the day. Everyone is acutely feeling the pangs of material existence. Even in the ranks and files of the American Senate, the pinpricks of material existence are felt, so much so that April 30, 1974, was actually set aside as Prayer Day. Thus everyone is feeling the resultant pinpricks of Kali-yuga brought about by human society’s indulging in illicit sex, meat-eating, gambling and intoxication. ✔️🕉️➡️☯️🔊

Man, when Darrel drives away with the family is a bitter sweet moment. It’s sad, but also makes you hopeful that that young kid will have a chance at some sort of normal life. Even with the state helping support his foster family, Socrates still offers to send money to help and with his last goodbye of “he don’t eat too much..” you can see the sadness in him. A shadow outlined in sun light. I can’t wait to start this book and get to know more about these characters and world that the author, Walter Mosley, created.

A few things to note after watching this masterpiece. Socrates obviously has PTSD. The opening clearly shows you his haunted past and how, despite his time served, he still walks with the demons of his past actions. Another example we see of this is when he strikes Darrell at 42:29, after feeling the need to aid Darrel in doing what's morally right by telling his mother what happened to her son. The cries of a sad mother reminded him of his past actions, when he took the lives of his wife and the man she was cheating on him with. Socrates is actively dealing with PTSD and it clearly greatly affects his judgements throughout the film. I wouldn't necessarily call Socrates "Good" or "Evil" since he goes out of his way to ensure Darrell is on the right path and even insists that he would take custody of him. Yet he claims that at 58:10 that it's better to "kill a black man, than to turn him into the police." This statement, taken with a grain of salt, shows his mentality as a prisoner, a black man, and an ex-con at the time, and how he despised being in prison so much that he would never send another black man to the same fate. But death isn't a valid solution or a morally sound argument either considering how it limits man's choice to act of his own will in the world. Great Movie. Laurence Fishburne is easily one of the greatest actors of all time

I bought this book ("Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned") at a library sale in '97 or '98; since then I've been one of Walter Mosely's biggest fans. His writing is simple, with an uncanny ability to make complex social issues easy to understand and comprehend. I've read just about everything Mr. Mosely has written (his sci fi novels are first rate!) and he never fails to bring a totally different point of view to so many of our societal ills. Socrates Fortlow is just a street smart, modern day version of the philosopher he was named after, and he routinely schools everyone he comes into contact with in how they should be living. Socrates gets another story ("Walkin' the Dog") which delves further into his backstory. Anyway I ordered this movie from Amazon years later and still watch it; I admired Socrates so much that I named our first family dog after him.

Smh. closing my eyes.... smh. Look at me.. fighting being aggravated with having my written words changed by a program just so I can express myself.... I know the affect of words. Not only can he restore his life from past mistakes, but also can be instrumental in the lives of others and in his community.
