Kim Il-Sung presided over a Korea that was more free and prosperous than its southern counterpart for 3 decades. It was only when the USSR fell that things deteriorated. Electrical grids, trade deals, and capital investment vanished over night, and the DPRK was faced with near economic ruin. The government was forced into economic and political isolation and so had to crack down harder on dissent and roll back amenities for lack of resources.

Kim Il Sung was different from his son and grandson. He was a good and well intentioned leader. At one point, the north was genuinely better than the south, until his death and his son took power. It honestly should’ve been anyone else but Jong Il

Meh it's hard to tell, Kim il sung wanted reunification but also to have absolute power giving the South Korea goverment just a few seats in the parliment and mostlikely he eventually would've purge the remaning pro-democracy politicians in order to secure his grip in power posing a even mayor threat to world peace since they would have access to South Korea's resources.

@@Demons972 to be fair when Kim Il-Sung attempted reunification there wasn't democracy in the south... it was a corrupt dictatorship... just not a communist one (hence the US support). It was also pretty economically incompetent and lagged well behind the North for decades until US and Japanese investment turned it around and the USSRs collapse combined with sanctions made the Northern economy and isolated and thus weak. Had the US simply not intervened in the Korean War, the southern situation (for the time) wouldn't have changed much given it would've just been swapping one ruler for another... only the new one would have so social programs and probably would've lifted some southerners out of poverty. Whether Kim Il-Sungs 1950s United Korea would've ended up looking roughly the same today as it does in our timeline is hotly debated... some say it would, others say it could look more like a dynastic korean version of modern day China (which is to say rich and diplomatically powerful rather than isolated, but with the Kim Dynasty at the helm). Having not been intervene against in the Korean War certainly would've toned down the militarism and hostility by a fair bit in the now peninsula spanning DPRK, and the visceral anger against the US likely never would've developed (would've just disliked it about as much as every other communist country of the time). There would be no reason for the long-standing sanctions and so the domestic economy and the food situation would likely also be much better in hypoethtical DPRK United Korea than in IRL North Korea. All in all, personally, I don't think United Korea (if it had United during the early days of the Korean War due to lack of US involvement) would look half bad... I tend to agree with the variable "China-like" speculations as to how it would've ended up.
