Ari Aster's 2023 film Beau Is Afraid is a messy and confusing film, in a way that I absolutely love. So I wanted to jump on here and talk about the films subtextual and environmental storytelling that helps unpack the film and it's deconstruction of Beau's relationship to his mother. The film manages to fully explore their relationship despite rarely seeing Mona until the final 40ish minutes of the film, and Aster's use of water plays a key role in that working as well as it does.
