I've felt very uncomfortable when one of my coworkers who is from Jamaica went on a homophobic rant in the breakroom on two occasions. I wish I'd been stronger and spoke up (I just left the room). It's easy to hide as a bi woman married to a (bi) man. Glad you got out of there safely. I want to be culturally sensitive, but homophobic machismo bullshit pisses me off.

Truth. Not ascribing to the social norms and conventions in a Caribbean country can be a chilling experience. On the other hand, some islands are more gay-friendly/ tolerant than others. Barbados is one of them. Just have to ignore the constant stares or occasionally insults that might be thrown your way as you pass by, but we're not as aggressive as other islands. Even though being gay is technically illegal here, but it's not a law that's strictly enforced...

The more I hear about Jamaica the scarier it sounds. I know there are good people there but unfortunately none of them are in charge. I loved the way she told the story..very funny..but I could feel the fear in my stomach.

Omg girl! That happened to us! But of all places, Paris! Or twenty minutes from Paris. This shady ole shop keeper pulled out a cleever and started screaming for us to get the fuck out of his store! My friend got pissed the fuck off and pulled one of these huge glass jars and pulled it off and SPLAT! Pickles every where! We ran like crazy bitches for blocks and blocks til we got to the train station. Whew! Jamaica is infamous for its intolerance of Gays. A young transgendered boy was killed recently. I was so sad. It broke my heart.
