I have struggled with this for a very long time… I guess I’ve come to the personal conclusion that people exploit Jesus to exploit others for personal gain… but when you really know Jesus the energy is not what is portrayed in the church.

I'm only halfway through the video but I admire the way you think so much, and you're totally right. Your relationship with God cannot be forced, fabricated, formulated, "say these words", give this much money etc. It's completely missing the point. Jesus criticised religous people, again and again, who did this very same thing. People claiming to be wise, boasting about how they keep their traditions when in reality all of their "love" actually had selfish motives and was not real at all and you see this again and again in history. Not every "Christian" knows God. Goobie, I want you to know something. God sees you more than you see yourself. He wants your honest, desperate heart. Theres no formula to it. Its so easy even for me as a christian to go to other people for what God is, rather than God himself. Man will always fall short. i hope this gave you a new prespective ❤. There are many testimonies of people who hated God because people represented Him so poorly, doing horrible things and not living it out, but then came to know God personally. Raised Christian told tithe was $ for paying for Church building repairs & heat ,electricity mission support,assisting those in need & Organist, Secretary. Pastors,etc. I too questioned Christianity views...I always felt Jesus was more against controlling of people for selfish gain. I saw how religions compete, so I ventured many faiths to find God. Sitting in the woods one day what came to mind was a wheel & heard there are many spokes in a wheel but only One hub, we are of the Earth. No one is better than another. Hi Goobie. I'm a Catholic from Nebraska. I really appreciate your intellectual honesty. I was raised in the Methodist church. We didn't do the speaking in tongues thing in the Methodist Church, and I've always found that a little weird. I don't think it's divinely inspired when most people try to do it these days, so it just doesn't work. I will just say that my journey to Catholicism has been a long one as I didn't really convert until the age of 47 (two years ago). I haven't encountered any major questions that the Catholic Church hasn't had a reasonable answer for. I wish you the best on your spiritual journey.

Thank you for sharing your story! Your lived experience comes with a lot of nuance, and unfortunately many people don't allow for nuance in their theology or worldview. I hope you don't get discouraged by zealots in the comments - I'm pretty sure they'll always exist. It's much easier to write a comment than it is to critically think about you and your community's belief system. This isn't a fight any of us are ever going to win, in fact it isn't even a fight at all. It just is what it is. As you've mentioned before, it's a good thing that we don't all think the same. But thank you for doing what you can to create space for nuance in our thinking. We need a lot more of that in our society.

Seek truth not religion. Jesus died for our sins to be forgiven. You need only trust in his gift. He is the son of God and also God and the Holy Spirit are all the one and only God who created all.

Goobie, I feel you man. My heart was heavy listening to what you've gone through. I have gone through very similar internal battle that you have gone through. I have noticed similar inconsistencies and ugliness that you have and struggled with it. I did however end up keeping my faith through it all. There are a couple of things I would like to say. First, don't put your faith on people, only in God. It seems that a lot of the things that you've mentioned has something to do with the failures of people. Second, continue to seek the truth. When you're up for it, read the bible again. Seek truth for yourself, don't just rely second hand "truths". I love you man. I pray that you'll find peace and comfort in the Lord.

You are right when you say we need to speak the truth. You are doing a good and very difficult thing here. I found this hard to listen to but I do believe that “the truth will set you (us) free”.

Thank you so much for this video. You now find inner peace and your own identity. I find stoicism similar to Buddhism. You have to love yourself first and live your true life before you can love others including your neighbors and the environment. According to Buddhism, life is impermanent in both positive and negative ways or what Albert Camus calls absurd. When things don't happen the way you wish, then find a positive way to go on, to reduce suffering or to revolt peacefully as Camus put it. I was born in Saigon in a buddhist family. I became confused with religions when I came to the US. My parents never pressured me to believe in any certain religion. Until a few years from now, I find Buddhism extremely helpful -not as a religion but as a way of life, a philosophy. Thank you for sharing this very sensitive issue. I totally agree with you and your conclusion of this video. To me, heaven is on earth depending on how you live your life and treat yourself and your surroundings on earth in the here and the now.

These are the exact reasons I am not a christian. I grew up in a mormon cult. Thankfully, I got away from that when I was 18 but the PTSD left from this religion is real. It is a way to control and get economic benefits undoubtedly.

At salvation you get couple things, new heart, new spirit. Ezekiel 36:26.. so from the new heart, you have new desires which include loving your self and neighbors…Bible even says to give freely from the “heart” not under pressure 2 cor 9:7

You have definitely ruffled some feathers Goobie, and I commend you for speaking your truth. It doesn't really matter whether someone is Christian or not. What matters is that following your heart, a path that is a direct connection with the creator. Using One's heart and soul allows connection with the greatness and being open to listen and trust your heart to receiving and be present. My take on religion is also going to ruffle some feathers as well. Religion was created by man in order to give structure to humanity, as time went on it became misconstrued by any middleman who interpreted the information, which lead to new concepts of belief systems. I believe people are realizing that religion no longer serves them and are looking for a direct connection with Source, a path to love and light.

Wow, again... thank you for sharing. (Oh dear this is way too long but your comments, as always are so thought/experience provoking!) Fellow P.K-er here but raised quite differently from you. I grew up being taught that our way, as Christians, of living and choices are a direct result of the inner working of the Holy Spirit. That, our beilief systems within all of life are guided by a faithful (hungering) desire for God. SO much of what you mention does NOT seem to be about Christianity (following Jesus Christ), but about some of the various ways it has been used to follow the faith as well as manipulate people. Eg. the feeding of the hungry BUT only after they've paid with their time in attending a church service.. And, even bigger to me, the aspect of what you described is "the prosperity gospel" not just with tithing but claiming blessing and giving of your money- abundantly- SO THAT.... you'll basically, be paid back!! I was taught that THAT is the antithesis actually, of what following Christ is about! I actually, also went to seminary, and my "pastorate" and calling was in clinical chaplaincy. It was "pastoring a church" to whomever came through the hospital doors, No matter belief, non belief, athiest, etc... etc... etc... Spiritual care was/is withheld from NO ONE. And as a professional chaplain, we do not seek conversion but to be present to those in need. I LOVE it! I get to meet with, walk alongside, advocate for, people from such a varied rainbow of faiths (or none) and life experiences (of the kind I never would have been priviledged to, if I'd been working in parish ministry!) Not a bad thing just better suited to my skills/gifts/calling. My 'job' was/is to base my 'ministry' and approach to them in a way that is in keeping with their faith tradition or body of beliefs. I do not necessarily share the root of their beiief but as a CLINICAL model, my assessment of their needs, must be based upon THEM, their story, grounding, worldview. It's not about me except for my required clinical training to make such assessments. THAT is very differnet from the narrow and bounded path your experience taught you. AND it was to "patients, familes and staff" which often times included your (professional) kin! Especially in trauma centers. So much of what you've shared here and in previously viewed posts, seems typical to growing up, observing and questioning; healthy and normal! The denomination in which I was raised and yet belong is PCUSA. Definitely not what you have known. Within our society and "Christianity" (especially in the current state of our country's political landscape) it seems that there is very little, to no emphasis, on following Jesus Christ but one of adopting a Law-bound OT approach to life, choices and leglistic rigidity=(SHAME based). And the 'shame' is projected! THAT has nothing to do with the Jesus Christ in the Bible, nothing! When what truly feeds our souls/spirits is the freedom in Jesus Christ; following his commandments. (Looks very different from the religious right in this country and from my understanding of the love and freedom of Christ.) I get that your church upbringing was not conducive to continuing along the same lines as your parents but did you ever look outside the church affiliation in which you were raised? IT was and IS not the only way to comprehend the simple yet huge and life challenging message of Jesus Christ. I do not intend to malign the church of your parents or of anyone else's faith in this, and yet... what you descibe is so completely foreign to MY understanding and experience of Life in Christ as is the political right's alignment with the religious right that I'm not sure we even worhip the same God. There are many in my 'camp' but we tend to not be quite so alienating and demanding of others. So too, the Biblical commandment to 'rule over the earth "AS STEWARDS"!! That means CARE, wisdom, humane treatment, guarding of earth's resources, STEWARDSHIP and not tyranical wastefulness and greed! Too, too much done in the name of religion and specifically of Christianity is a horrific, shameful, despicable, violent, hate-filled racist SINFUL contortion of its true edicts, commandments and Truth. Although extremely difficult, I'd say, Blame the messanger not the message! There is not one topic or arena on earth that is not vulnerable to evil being perpetuated upon it, infused within it and use of it, for the selfish and greed-motivations of those who seek to build their power. To have done this in the name of any religion but specifically in the name of Christianity (given your experience ad focus in this), is a harm that cannot be healed this side of heaven... except by those individuals it has maimed, perhaps. What could I possibly do as a Christian to meke it better? To do as I've done, even in my puny way. I would say it does matter, to your wellbeing and to God. Beyond that it is not anyone's business. Including mine, I have responded as (despite your scientific training and inquisitive and capable mind) you like so many of us, base our conclusive opinion/knowledge of a topic solely on our own experience of it, certainly noy a clinical or scientific approach. But it's is 'human' and natural that we'd allow the harm within the episode(s) of that sometimes be the conclusion or whole story. If I'd had a terrible spinal surgery, would it make any/all spine surgeries BAD? Just sayin'... thank you again, so much, for sharing!

Thank you for making and sharing this video. Thank you also for the descriptive history lesson- they sure don’t teach that in the school history books. The indigenous people were raped of their land and culture and as a race. The truth must be told indeed. There was a social study experiment done on young babies and if they have a sense of morality. By tracking their eye movements and the length of time it stayed fixed on various puppets, most babies preferred the puppet that helped rather than hurt another puppet. However, most babies also preferred the puppet that had the same snack preference as them, implicating social bias, even if those same puppets end up hurting another puppet. It appears that babies have an internal sense of morality but in particular for others who are similar to us. Once we see the other as “other”- that is separate from us and wholly different from us in our limited perception, there is less concern and care for them. And that allows for violence to happen.

This is a devastatingly sad story. You're very knowledgeable and mindful. I concur with what you're saying, but I do believe God is real. And I think all organized religions are praying to the same person. (But call him different names). I feel some human beings will distort the words of Jesus and take advantage of others. There will always be humans that will hide in the name of religion to control, divide and gain wealth. This makes me sad. I feel God just wants us to love one another.

How did you do your high school while traveling? Homeschooling? I want to homeschool my two kids while traveling. But I am afraid I will do a terrible job? Yeah on religion, it doesn't matter whichever religion, when it comes into power they will find a way to mess it up. I am a Buddhist, if Buddhist people had ruled this world, we would have an equivalent crusade story. Muslims got into power back in time in India and they destroyed one of the oldest Buddhist universities (Nalanda) and they buried the whole thing under the earth. It is the people, not the books or the religion. Not the holy books, it is the people. I learn from everyone, so I am not sure if I am a Buddhist Buddhist only. As long as you are kind. You are so right to question Christianity and indeed all forms of organised religion. I've always felt that the evil which comes through wicked people masquerading as Christians, in pursuit of power and wealth, has never been addressed. It's time it was put under the microscope. However I'm also suggesting that the best thing anyone can do in waking up tp the reality, is walk away from places and people of religion. It must be an awful dilemma for you, having parents who are not seeing what you are seeing.

God is the creator of Everything. YES it matters to where you are going when you pass. The new testament is 2 commandments as we are not longer under the law. Jesus is a relationship. Not a religion. Following Jesus doesn't mean wealth no problems etc He told us it would not be easy. Faith is what he is looking for. Not money. Free will to choose is given and grace as we all fall short. It's pretty 'out there' to say the least!!!!!! I believe this practice in certain denominations is interesting, curious, and does point to perhaps connecting with something important, something deep, something genuine and authentic, but I'm not sure exactly what or how I can even explain my intuitive understanding of what this is all about, and I'm not sure that the way it's practiced in a kind of collective stupor/ hypnosis, is necessarily the way to go, but who knows? Some people might find this liberating, or getting them in touch with something deeper/ or deep within them? Some sense of abandon and free expression??? A sort of shaking out of their tongues and vocal chords?? Like the way you would shake out your body, just to loosen up tightness? Not knowing anything about speaking in tongues, I would sometimes speak some gibberish to my dad, when I was a child and perfectly able to speak normally, and he would speak similar gibberish back to me, just for fun. I guess this was done in moments of peaceful and calm communion. I would now struggle to remember the kinds of sounds that we made. They were probably pretty Polish based bits and bobs as we spoke Polish at home, and with some German sounds mixed in, as we lived in Germany. I don't think we did it very often. Just very occasionally. However I do remember my mum saying to stop being so silly cause it freaked her out a bit. I suppose there is a natural fear of the unknown. She probably didn't even think consciously that we might be invoking some strange spirit, but for sure she didn't fancy us going on at length like this, which is perfectly understandable.

Very interesting. As I listen to you I am saddened by the discrepancies you listed. The true discrepancies are between what you were taught and what Gods Word /The Holy Bible actually teaches. It is good to think and read and learn for yourself. Christians, just like all people, are not perfect and commit sins/wrongs. God gives us the gift of healing forgiveness. Religions and Christianity are not synonymous and you are speaking as though they are. There is so much I want to correct. The one thing that I would ask is that you read and study Gods words before you speak about Him again. I will point out one thing about Gods words. The old books were written before Christ and the new books were written after Christ. The two perspectives Change how you understand the words, (ie the laws,)and who, what, when, where why.

It sounds to me that you have a problem with what people have done in the name of Christ, but you also seem to fail to recognize the fact that maybe they were just bad people using their religion as a weapon. You yourself pretended to be Christian to be with that girl in college. In the same way, individuals do things to get what they want, sometimes horrible things, in the name of their religions. Just about any major religion has a dark history of its self-proclaimed adherents. Take the Hamas attack on Israel, for example. Most Muslims are peaceful and would not approve of that attack. In the same way, most Christians are not the angry, vicious murderers and destroyers of indigenous cultures you are describing. To understand a religion, you need to look more to the actual teachings of the faith, rather than the individual actions of those who claim to be in a religious group yet whose lives are in complete contradiction to that faith. Yes, the Bible and the Koran have verses which can be taken out of context to advocate destruction of others. But look at the whole message. Jesus taught love. Those soldiers you described (or the Crusaders in the Middle Ages) were not loving. But they were likely just violent people who used their self-proclaimed religions to justify their violent desires.

Tithing is a reminder that your physical blessings god gives you he can also take away. If you forget god and indulge in your possessions your greediness will lead to your own destruction. It also pays for church building constructions and pays for food, water and shelter for natural disasters. Jesus saying it is more difficult to enter the eye of a needle story was literal. Just like his story with the young ruler. No amount of wealth can buy your way into heaven. And the ruler was sad that he couldn’t sell his possessions(letting go of material things) to live a life dedicated to serving others and serving God, He chose to love the world more than God thus he cannot enter Heaven that way. The inconsistencies you found in Christian doctrine isn’t because they contradict or lack sense, it’s because you didn’t attend seminary as you mentioned, therefore you never understand the messages and truths behind the teachings that were taught. I apologize if I sound too upfront, I just want to make sure what I’m saying is clear. Love your videos man

Doesn't matter. A lot of faiths have come and gone on this planet during human history. All of them claimed to be "the one", yet eventually, all have gone into oblivion. Religion and faith are construct in the minds of the human animal. It only matters to humans, and specifically, it only matters to each individual human. The only thing matter is the universe. The only thing matters is that we are all trying to make it on this blue rock, hurling through space. If we don't love one another and watch out for each other, nothing else will, and we too will end up as forgotten fossils in someone else's museum drawers one day.

I don't beleive the hypocrisy is intentional, I believe they're just people trying to do their best. At the end of the day though, these same issues led me down a path of deconstruction that innevitably resulted in deconversion. I've grown a lot since them, im no longer angry with the church or with Christians, in fact I can find a lot within the traditions that I value, the celtic and the mystic traditions and I have Christianity to thank for The Lord of the Rings. That being said, I needed to heal and to do it i needed to find God, Nature, Tao, whatever you call it, outside of the tradition. I found that it's there. It's in real stoicism(not the broicism we mostly see today), Epicurus, Epictetus Herodotus, Lao Tzu, Chaung Tzu, Dogen, Shunryu Suzuki, Nishitani Keiji, Spinoza, DT Suzuki, indigenous traditions and pagan traditions and other religions and philosophies and etc. I forget who said it, but it was once said that nature was God's greatest scripture and i can resonate with that deeply. Soren Kierkegaard's Lily of the Fields and Birds of the Air comes to mind, excellent sermons. John Scotus Eurigena and John of the Cross and so Meister Eckhart and so many other Christians I believe to truly be important to myself, but no matter how hard I've tried, everytime i try to go back to the church, back to the narrative, i find myself repulsed. What Goobie says is truth and if you don't want people to be driven away from your faith, you need to find the God that exists at the heart of it and he needs to shine through. I have found myself. Maybe one day i will be Christian again, maybe not. Either way, i am happy, i am not in hell nor will i be. I am working to make this world a better place. I care not if you must condemn me or others like me for rejecting your faith, but in spite of that i ask only that you join me as i walk this path into a better future. Christians don't need to fantasize themselves as the only one's fighting the demons of this world, you can join the buddhists and the atheists, even if you disagree about their conclusions or their politics you can still work to strengthen the communities and the environments that we all share.

Someone said it doesn’t matter. It quite literally matters more than anything. It’s a gamble I would absolutely never take. I fully believe in an afterlife, and the two destinations being Heaven or Hell. I have Jesus in my heart and all my problems aren’t solved but, I do have basically unlimited peace and comfort.

Hey Goob, i've watched some of your vids, starting from your 'living in the mountains and quitting your job' one. You know, you can have it all - wife, family, house, wealth, great career with money, but some times those things just never satisfy. It's all temporary - our lives and our material things. christianity can most certainly become an empty religion. Having faith and a relationship with God/Christ Jesus is most important. This isn't the buddhist way of saying "relinquish all ties to the material world and free your mind" kind of self help talk. It's a segue into saying you've experienced an existential crisis even though you had/have it all, so what's next? Forget what you grew up on. Seek out the One True God and He will most certainly reveal himself to you. This life is just temporary. Remember that. So what really matters?

Ahh Goobie, more of your story. I too sat under many preaching Christians as a kid/teen. My heart has been down a very similar trail. I’m older than you. Today’s cast has caused joy in my heart for you. I’m not making excuses for God, but he does have to depend on some very imperfect people, partly because some haven’t answered the call or that’s just what He has. We don’t turn into Gods. Thank you for another heartfelt video. I definitely can relate to all of your videos that I’ve watched so far as a retired medical worker of 25 years. I actually hated myself for choosing that line of work. I’m married to a PK who had a lot of church hurt. We ended up converting to Eastern Orthodox Christianity because it was different enough that he didn’t have flashbacks during church services. Our form of Christianity agrees with you that “God is everywhere present and fills all things.” Whether you or anyone else considers you a Christian or not is irrelevant because you are a beautiful, loving and kind person that speaks the truth as you understand it. Thank you for this thoughtful video and sharing your complex journey with faith. I've also had a complicated history with my Christian beliefs. As the child of Asian immigrants, I also grew up in the church, left, and came back to it (currently) warts and all, problematic history and all. There's still beauty and goodness to be found there despite massive historic wrongs. There's also aspects of social justice and social action in Christianity too - see Catholic liberation theology- and surprising complementarity with other philosophies like Stoicism and writers like Eckhart Tolle that continue to inform my daily living, alongside my Christian faith. Keep your questioning heart❤

Dear Dr. Goobie. Now I stop worrying about you cause you have parents praying constantly for you. It means you'll never be failed in any way. Whatever you do, you'll achieve the goal at the end. The goal is gaining a great eternal life. I'm a mother of two grown up kids. The older one is my daughter who doesn't like to go to church and the younger one is my son who is depressed a little bit and likes to play online games for himself. It seems like frustrating as a mom, but I'd like to say everything is going to be okay cause my father, my lord, my master took control all over them. All I can do is praying constantly for them and all humanity. Dr. Goobie, you have the ones of the greatest parents in the world who are praying for you constantly. Whatever you do, everything is okay. God took control over you, too. Everything is fine. I love you. ❤

As someone who is a follower of Christ, and has found great peace in my faith in Christ, I often hesitate and even “cringe” by associating my self with Christianity due to my own experiences in youth and the social connotation of the label. For me I’ve found peace in accepting not truly knowing the meaning of existence and reality (which I was super caught up on) and just being in the moment and seeing past my own thoughts and problems sometimes. It started when i went to a magic mushy retreat and had my ego completely obliterated. It completely shifted how I view myself and the world. Defo recommend shrooms to anyone who may feel lost in life, but only if you think you’re ready. For some reason when I watch your videos and follow your mind I get the same feeling of when I was a little kid and all I did was think in my mind it was like I could literally hear my voice in my head and all I would think about it wired things like this and why are things to perfectly beautiful in nature and just try to find a logical answer

Was there any personal gain for your parents by giving free medicine as missionaries? No! They were sharing what they truly loved and believed in while offering free health care. No one just does that kind of stuff freely, away from the comfort of their home. They had great intentions of sharing their hearts desires and using free health care as a means to get peoples attention. I find it hard to believe that if they didn’t believe then they weren’t treated. It’s sad that you have twisted a lot of things to support the stuff you want to do.

Goobie, I totally understand you and I agree with what you are saying. And I also understand your struggle because I also lived it. The struggle is really an intricate part of the journey to uncover the THRUTH! Which is of course, what you are now going through on your journey of Self. I am much older than you and I have gone down this road which is also called the path to self-actualization (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs). If a person grew up in a secluded area and only had knowledge about their belief system, handed down to them generationally, they would be convinced that it was the truth, no matter how harmful it was. They would most likely defend it with their life 0:09 because it would be too threatening not to on many levels. This is what we encounter every day with people who have different opinions and belief systems. The problem is that everyone is convinced that theirs is the right and only way, and many will do anything to protect it - which we have seen throughout history. The concept that everyone has the right to believe or not believe, and also the idea that there are many roads that lead the same place, is not something they can even comprehend. Worst, they will never be able to understand your viewpoint and your right to it. At the very worst, they might start to look at you as the enemy. This is the hard and sad lesson I had to learn. My answer to your question is NO, my journey has taught me that it does not matter whether you are Christian or not; what matters is that you are an accepting, loving and caring human being. There is always going to be bad apples of a tree and sad to say now and days in the west it’s a lot of bad apples but they doesn’t mean the religion isn’t true we came to the point where here people are leaving Christianity bc of bad experiences of churches or people that claim to be Christian like things you said seeing people say and do one thing when the religion says something else.

No, it doesn't really matter. All religions are man-made. It is estimated that there are around 4000 religions in the world. J. Krishnamurti, the Indian sage and teacher, said that all religions are idiotic. I think that he was correct. The Dalai Lama said that "Kindness is my religion". I'll go with that. If there is a god looking down on all of this, he/she doesn't care which man-made religion a person embraces. How one treats other people - and I would add "other living things" to that - is all that matters. I prefer the term "Divine Intelligence". Humans are Divine Intelligence" incarnate, with all of the power of Divine Intelligence", unrealized. Sages have been saying that for thousands of years and quantum physicists are proving. it. Forget the man-made religions, and "Know Thyself". If one wants to choose one of the world's religions and call himself one, then at least choose one that advocates for and practices reverence for life. Like the Jains, for example. Try reading about Islam, Islam says that Christianity was originally true but it was distorted and that is why God sent Muhammad to put it back on track, it says that Jesus and all the messengers and their followers were Muslims and Islam is submission to God.

When I tell others I’m an atheist, it triggers some. I too thought it didn’t matter. I’m not so sure based on reactions I’ve heard. For 50+ years, I’ve pretty much had to not say anything about it. Just try to live my life, survive and advance. Stay safe Goobie.

I pray you see Christ for who he is and not from the “Christians” you have experienced. Are all doctors the same? No Therefore all Christians are not the same and do not represent the redemption of Jesus Christ. You yourself said you deceived others and said you were Christian and you were not. There are soo many like this, wolves in sheep clothing masquerading in the church amongst true believers and followers of Christ. I know how you feel and have experienced the hippocrites in church who tell you one thing and do another! However it does not take away from the supernatural experience and encounters I have had to confirm Jesus Christ is the way, truth and the life.
