Am I doing too much post production?

In this video the Flat Capped Photographer explores the area around Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales and shares his JPEG files straight from the camera with a comparison of his edited RAW file. In a world where technology has a hand in most things we do, are we too reliant on our post production software? Is there a limit to how much we should do? Should we be doing any at all?

Your philosophy suits my values to a tee. I did find your images a little dark for my tastes.

Really interesting video Tom, on the whole I think that post production does have a useful role to play given the limitations of the camera’s sensor. Looking at your comparison shots I was continually thinking that I’d have gone for something between the two, but that’s just personal preference. It always feels like a bit of an achievement to take a shot which needs little or no work, but it’s good to have the software to fall back on when needs be.

Great presentation last night at our club. I much prefer your edited results, using raw retains a greater dynamic range and allows you the most latitude in the editing process. My editing tends to be fairly basic and quick and I usually use highlight protection for my metering option as I hate blocked up highlights.

With regard to the comparative images, the post production ones are, on the whole, an improvement in clarity and visually more dramatic. However, for me, I would lighten them just a tad. Andrew

Really enjoyed the video Tom. This topic is always coming up in discussions with my photographic friends and you put forward a very balanced view. I previously found the editing facilities in Photos on the Mac sufficient for my requirements. But after exploring Lightroom Classic I find it has more of the subtlety with with which I like to use in post production and, as far I can see, will provide many more such facilities as my experience in its use grows.

I take all my photographs in JPEG and use a free edit program to do the limited edit possible if required and get the picture as good as I can in camera. I feel that too much enfaces is put on using the computer to alter photographs, instead of getting it right in camera.

Great idea for an experiment, I do very little in post process myself, mainly due to not having much experience with editing software. I found your raw / processed versions (90+ % of them at least) were much more pleasing on the eye than the jpeg's are, but I feel there can be a time & a place for both, depending on time constraints, light (or lack of) & subject matter. All in all a great video with very useful information. Thank you for posting it. Regards, Andrew.

Really good video Tom interesting to see how much you change the images, I often wonder how big a change people make to their images - how far removed are they from the reality I always shoot in jpeg and raw for comparison

Many thanks Karen, glad you enjoyed the video. I suppose the question is what is ‘reality’ in photography? Are we removing ourselves from it using post production or aiming to get closer to it? Maybe a topic for a future video!

Tom, if everything is done in camera, and no need to edit, you get a perfect shot every time, that would be no good to me whatsoever. The fun about photography is going out with your camera, yes take a good shot, a nice walk around n the fresh air then . Return home pull up a chair with a brew, and spend a couple of hours looking through you're collection then start editing the shots... That's what I do, I enjoy heading out, taking the shots returning home and start the editing. If you get everything perfect in camera, where is the fun in that what's the fun???

Many thanks for your comment Andrew. The location is Middle House on the footpath from Malham Tarn to Arncliffe. I do rabbit on a bit don’t I?! I’ll try to be more concise in future! Glad you’re enjoying the locations.
