I'm so proud of you Lorna. We've watched your pink dream come true with excitement. It's here. You've overcome the stumbling blocks and now we're enjoying the new adventures on beautiful Foxglove. Thank you and well done. You've inspired me to put the big girl pants on and "just get on with life". 🎉❤

I'd love to drop over for a barbie, if I start swimming now I'll be there in about 18 months 😁 A nice little branch but it could do with a clean out, those rushes are closing in.

There again lots of newby hire boaters blithely do the tunnels without a second thought. Granted there's probably a bit less paint on the bows after a tunnel transit but that's probably the worst of it. It might be that some people overthink the problems and should just get on with it.
@lornajaneadventures
@lornajaneadventures Месяц назад

I dont remember any talk of running lights, Do you simply turn on internal lights for tunnels?
@brianfalcus
@brianfalcus Месяц назад
You have a headlight in the bows hopefully pointing at the roof of the tunnel to avoid dazzling oncoming boats. good idea to have a light on at the stern to avoid anyone running into you
@mellissadalby1402

Lots of foliage growing over the canal, must make it hard to see around bends
@t1n4444
@t1n4444 Месяц назад
Plus the blasted reeds act as an armature to collect the silt. If you see reeds then you can be sure the canal is silting up. Clearing the reeds involves a fair bit of dredging too. Eventually the canal system in areas where there's little hire boat traffic will silt up and die. Ironically we see old dewatered canals being resurrected by self funding volunteer groups, which is a good thing ... but other less well known canals are allowed to silt up and become unnavigable. Those canals with few locks end up becoming vast settling ponds because the wake erodes the banks and the silt isn't flushed away by the lock operations. The Ashby is one such and provides excellent training for getting off the shelf about every five minutes. The problem is lack of funds. DEFRA will cease to fund the canal network and consequently CRT have raised the licence fee per boat, depending on length and, on the widebeam canals, by the beam or width. I was obliged to pay another £200 this year and we'll see a similar increase next year and the year after that. Unfortunately a lot of poor people live on the canals because renting a house is beyond their finances. It seems that the increase in licence fees will be a stretch too far and these people will be evicted from the waterways, never to return. Their boats will be seized and sold off to recoup the legal costs. It seems too that there's no real strategy to maintain the canal system and it may be that the system will end up with disused canals ... until we see volunteers reclaiming them in years to come. Some authorities propose (and goodness knows where the money will come from) reintroducing freight across the network and raising income from that. It is claimed that rebuilding canals brings an income to those areas but I'm old enough and skeptical enough to wonder how accurate these comments are. However it may be that freight takes priority and hire boaters find that completing a so called "ring" ( invented by the ad men) becomes very difficult in the duration of the hire. For continuous cruisers this won't be too much of an inconvenience. Hope that helps.
