Am I too old to play the sax? 

Started sop and alto sax at 72, now I'm 80 and play in Jazz Band and an orchestra. Yippee.

True true true 😂. I started at 45 after 35 years of piano. Also play guitare, drums and flute. But when i decided to start sax, that changed my life. For this instrument you absolutly need connexion. That is why it it so nice to play. Thx for your video ❤

Lynden i started playing the sax when i was 44 years old i am 74 now and still playing i have met people from all over the world at sax schools in london birmingham shefield and lousville kentucky with jamie abersolds summer schools, i practice everyday well almost as i live in a flat in spain and lt is hard to practice with conviction so i go to the nearby park and practice even at my age i still look for new things to try on the sax as it keeps my mind active its important as you grow older, it is why i watch your vids you teach with conviction and are body and soul in what you do they help me to refresh my mind practicing in thirds for example as i forgot but saw your vid and began practicing that a few days ago,,anyone out there reading this pick up the sax and learn like i did i was shy at 44 to learn and timid because i was surrounded by young dudes playing really good but jamie abersold said to me once dont be shy you are whats known as a late bloomer so go forward. Now in retirement at 66 , the sax is really fun now I have more time ! Your video on Take five and session band has been a massive step forward. Nailed the head , now it’s getting Mr Desmond’s solo . How good does that feel . Many thanks .

I was 36 when I started sax. I had no musical background at all. I was 50 when I started playing bass guitar. I play both regularly. Only last night I played both at an open mic night. When I was a teenager, early 20’s , I was far too busy playing sport, chasing girls and enjoying life.

I started 2 Months ago playing sax aged 53, and I totally agree! What motivates me is the process of developing myself into something new and not really how good I am in playing it when comparing myself to others. Cheers 🎉

Started sax at 61, a few months ago. I've played guitar since I was 14 so there's undoubtedly an advantage in terms of musical theory. BUT zero in terms of physically getting to grips with a woodwind instrument. Set goals, practice, set more goals. I'm like a kid in candy shop learning stuff - the joy of getting some passages right in Moon River yesterday was the same joy as nailing Rockaway Beach when I was a kid.

That's a really insightful video. Articulate and intelligent. One thing, I think the assimilation process becomes a touch more difficult with age, but that's more than balanced out by all the positives!

I am 66. Started clarinet in lockdown. Went on to sax. Believe it or not I still don’t sound like Lester Young! More a Dexter Gordon! Only joking ! Really!

Yep, play for fun and ignore the tiny (and silly) minority who think there's no point starting unless you're going to be a virtuoso. The challenge is to not be impatient and to only judge yourself against where you were a year ago.
