Am I Wasting My Time Splitting Pine?

Anyone bitchin about burning pine doesn't know how to manage a fire box...enough said.

I got tired of burning pine logs in brush piles, so I split a few cord last year. I've been selling a "firepit mix" of half pine/half poplar (or soft maple as I've ran out of poplar). It's been very popular for the backyard burning crowd, and I can save my oak, hickory, cherry, for the premium hardwood mix. It's worked out well. I've caught some slack on the Facebook... One old man even said it would "burn up like papper" (paper, I assume)...sure is more fun to burn $60 worth of pine, rather than 60 - $1 bills !

I like having some pine in the mix for my woodstove. It works great for starting fires or to rekindle or give it a quick jump start and get some quick heat.

I heated an entire winter with pine in my outdoor boiler. It kept me warm.

Definitely worth your time, especially if your customers are asking for it. Pine is excellent camp wood. I do a few cords a year and it always sells.

It makes good fire pit wood and kindling if you're using a woodstove that you don't keep going continuously. You can also keep a few full size rounds as splitting blocks for using an axe.

All depends on where one lives. Some people only have pine or juniper as options. It may not always be the best wood according to some... but the best wood is what you have available. We burn pine if we want a quick hot fire. We burn juniper throughout the night to keep a steady warm heat that will last the night.

It seasons fast, it burns hot. During shoulder season you don't need a fire for all day. Just a few hours in the AM or PM. Pine is good for that.

Down in my area almost all recreation wood is bundled like 80% pine and 20% hardwood. Pine is easier to catch and does all the things you said. Not to mention it usually burns faster, which in my opinion is ideal for a backyard burn. I don’t know many people who wanna sit out with a giant oak fire waiting on it to burn down lol

Here in the Pacific NW, Douglas Fir & Hemlock is the equivalent to Pine, and it's awesome for both camping and heating...

Your spot on with your comments on pine. I use my smaller square splits and mix in 3 pieces in a bundle when I have some available. I mix it with ash or maple. Good videos, I watch everyday

Nothing wrong with pine. I know people who use pine/spruce, poplar, and box elder in the shoulder seasons in their stoves. Makes a quick hot fire for when you don’t want or need a hot stove all day. Just something to take the dampness and coolness off. Certainly great as a backyard firewood. Cracks and pops. Smells good too. Thanks for the video.

Just found your channel. Awesome! I had to take down a 90’ gray pine tree here in California. I have been using it for kindling ever since. But I also mix larger pieces in with my oak. It’s perfectly fine to burn in a stove if you know what you’re doing. People will tell you that it’s the pitch in the pine that makes it a problem to burn in a stove and that is total nonsense. It’s the water content.

I was raised on pine, we couldn’t get nothing else. I too use the pine for the fire pit and on lighting the wood stove.

Having an outdoor boiler and access to a lot of free pine about 75% of the wood I burn in a typical season is pine so I split a lot of it. Most of the pieces you do in this video would just be split in half and burned up with a few split in thirds or quarters.

Pine is a colossaly excellent firewood. All this negative nonsensei talk about pine is ill advised and a waste of bandwidth.

Alot of people burn it in their fireplace and stove. They just clean stack/pipe more often.

I love burning pine in my backyard fire pit. It’s easy to split, I can use it for kindling, lights quick, smells great, pops, and isn’t super hot like a harder wood which is perfect for summer & spring hangouts around the fire pit.

I cut split and stacks tons of pine to heat my home with. Why? Because it's what's available around here. The mountains are full of thousands of beetle killed pine trees. It works fine for me. If I had access to other species I would probably use them but you gotta take what you can get.

The Black Hills of South Dakota/Wyoming is 95+% Ponderosa Pine. We don't have a choice but, Pine is Fine.

Here in the rocky mtns pine and similar conifers are one of the main heating woods in our long cold winters! However splitting it small causes it to burn up too fast! Cottonwood is another of our main heating woods and you don't split it too small either! We just don't have a lot of hard woods in large supply!

Hi Dan - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. It's hard enough to source wood over here that you can't afford to be fussy or a log hound snob. The majority of wood I get is softwoods so I don't grumble. The Forestry Commision plant mainly Sitka Spuce.

We heat our home for 8 months with Jack Pine in central Canada , pine is a excellent heating wood and has a bad wrap . It’s a myth that It plugs chimneys and doesn’t give of great BTUS. Yes you need more then say a hardwood but def underrated as fuel. We burn 10 cords of well seasoned pine and get no more then a sour cream container of creosote . We also run a wood heating business installing, cleaning, inspecting wood heaters and selling firewood with a large amount of our client base burning pine with great success in Manitoba where it’s -40c steady . LONG LIVE THE PINE! 🪵

We use pine all the time in our fire place as well as campfires. Doesn’t spit like spruce, and burns clean! Used it in my fireplace for over 20 years.

I sell a lot of pine firewood to campers, and lake home people!! I also burn a lot of pine myself....love the smell, flame, and the crackle it makes!! Stay safe my friend

I had 95 pulp cord harvested last winter and as a result I have a lot of pine down that still needs to be cut and collected and split. No one has expressed an interest so it's going to lay in yhe woods and rot.

I use pine to start fires in my wood and coal furnace as long as it's dry it doesn't hurt anything. I also use pine for camping or sitting around a fire. Save on the hard wood

If you're selling campfire wood, why would you sell hardwood? Here in Maine that's blasphemy! Hardwoods should be burned in woodstoves and wood boilers only! Lol. I sell 30-35 cords worth of premium red pine every summer, it's definitely the best camp firewood in m opinion!

Pine is good wood. I'd love to have more of it. However, what grows around me most, is blue spruce. (for conifer wood) Which can be a knotty nightmare to split. When burned in typical firewood size pieces, it pops and flings embers everywhere, and often it slows down and smolders. Makes excellent kindling, though. The pine I've seen tends to be a lot straighter grained, and has smaller knots. Plus, nothing smells like a pine campfire! Never understood the wood snobs, and their need to gainsay anything but their own favorite variety. Esp when making blanket statements about someone else's personal situation or business. Yeah, I know: that's the internet for ya. But sheesh- if folks would listen and pay attention, youtubers might not have to explain themselves for the 40th time re the same thing... ( I sell CAMPFIRE wood, and to folks with fireplaces. Bundles and loose bins. I also have a firepit of my own that I enjoy using. AND have customers that like a variety of different things- or just a plain old variety. What is, or isn't TEH greatest heating wood EVAH is not esp relevant...) Lol- it's like the size question that always comes up, over and over. Plus, as a business, cheap+readily available+ easy to process+ dries fast= a nice, rapid return on your time. And if you have people ASKING for it... Who wants to tell a customer with cash in hand that you're out of wood- while standing in front of row after row of it, that's way too green to sell? (particularly if they don't care WHAT it is, they just want wood that'll burn) I apologize for the rant, Dan.

So the real question is, if a customer wants to know how much for a facecord of pine versus hard maple, what do you charge for each?

If you are in the US South, that would be a waste, no one would buy it., but for fire pit use, it is fine. Pine is considered a trash wood, but that is southern yellow pine, not red pine.

At the price of fuel split all the wood and burn it. A warm wife is a not bundled up wife and that my friend is a great reason to burn everything lol.

Where I'm from pine wood sell as good as alder . Splitting wood of any species is NEVER a waste of time I'm my opinion . Any wood is good wood. Love the content 👌that splitter is beauty

Wood yard is looking good. There is nothing wrong with pine, good for heating and camp fires. If you have access to it and customers request it or you have other needs for it. Then you are not wasting your time. 🪵😎👍
