OHSA does not screw around. I was at a Togos for lunch, it was summer and in excess of 100f, and the front windows were all being replaced. The air conditioning was also non-functional. The workers were constantly sweating from the heat, and of course, they have food products that can rot that they're feeding people. I asked one of the workers why it was so hot, beyond the windows being replaced - that is how I found out the air conditioning wasn't working. I asked if the management knew, and was told 'yes, but they don't want to pay for it right now.' So, I called OHSA and filed a complain. The next day when I went back for lunch, the windows that had no glass were covered with wood, and the air conditioning was working. I asked the same worker what happened, and the owner got a call the afternoon that I made the complaint and was told that if the windows were not closed by some method, and the air conditioning was not functional the next day, the location would be shut down until everything was repaired. So, the owner had to pay emergency fees for the air conditioning to get fixed overnight, and had to pay for someone to board up the windows. That worker thanked me and gave me a double meat sandwich. :) As I said, OHSA does not screw around.

Retaliation of that sort is actually illegal in most (if not all?) states. Tantamount to a million dollar lawsuit if say, for example, Wendys or Taco Bell ect.. fires you for complaining about something that is a public health issue, that actually legally NEEDS fixed.. You getting paid.

As techs we worked in similar conditions, it was like this for me 20yrs ago at subaru in long Island. The shop was near Grumman factory and the water on the island was also polluted ,ground water . I never drank the water on long Island due to the toxic plume in the ground water. Also worked in out house with no heat on multiple 20 degree days and not permitted to work in the main shop . The justification was they closed not long after I quit . What goes around comes around bro. It happens they always get what's coming to them .

The Lexus Dealership I work at is very clean, the shop floor is cleaned thoroughly once a week, employees break room is great with complimentary coffee/ water/ice tea and food items. Once in a while we get a catered lunch with 6 ft hero and side dishes. We have 10 lifts, 1 inspection area and 1 alignment area. We treat customers vehicles with respect and care. This is the nicest Dealership I personally worked as a tech. Best of all this Dealership actually ran the a/c in the shop area.

OSHA 100% gave them a visit or a call! Had something similar at a warehouse job I had. We stored multiple pallets of muriatic acid, you're supposed to have a whole bunch of lime to make it inert in case of spill, plus PPE to handle it. We had basically neither. OSHA got called by a receiving guy, and when OSHA made a surprise visit to the warehouse our bosses made a bluster of 'Oh yeah, we've got new lime already on the way' or some BS. Never saw new lime. Or fresh PPE. 🙄

Also please tell them that even though we are dirty, smelly, and curse alot- us mechanics are actually pretty smart, and smart enough to know that we are severely underpaid, especially when cross referencing Service Advisors, and damn salesmen. OSHA totally had a hand in that. The complaint process is that OSHA first sends a letter to the employer stating the complaints and gives the employer a specified amount of time to respond with corrective actions, or it will show up for an onsite inspection which ultimately will result in more found violations and subsequent fines. With that, your employer took action so they wouldn't be subjected to the abovementioned inspection.

I had an issue with a lift very similar to this. Couldnt get it set up "confidently" on this truck, due to missing parts for the lift attachments, took me a while playing with it ( I was still new, first month in a real shop) so much so the manager comes and gives me crap about being slow. I snapped at him about the missing attachments and "pucks". He responded by getting on his knees, setting the lift up for me, then ordering me to lift it. So I did. The blazer tipped over 5 foot up in the air, front right lift arm up inside the wheel well. The next day I came into work the lift was fixed and we had all brand new assorted chocks/pucks. That manager never gave me crap again about taking my time. He learned that i wasnt a lazy worker.. I was just very concerned.. and he learned to trust my judgment after that.

Not trying to bring social issues onto this channel but let’s be real, in a male dominant profession, especially if the department is all male, management tends to push the limits on what they can get away with. The bathroom issue was something I dealt with at a factory with all males and the first couple of months, the bathroom was osha hazard gold. Until a couple newbies were clean freaks and took matters it into their own hands to deal with it. Even the break room where it’s insinuated that you eat food in, was not welcoming. This all because higher ups want to save a dime on custodial labor, at the cost of their employees’ health and welfare at the workplace
