The actor Amanda Abbington says she first complained to the BBC about her dance partner Giovanni Pernice within days of starting Strictly Come Dancing.
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
Months later, an ongoing investigation into complaints about his alleged teaching methods led to him being left out of the 2024 series line-up.
Now she is speaking out publicly, accusing him of "abusive, cruel and mean" behaviour.
Giovanni Pernice has consistently denied wrongdoing, and tonight a spokesperson told us that he refutes any claim of threatening or abusive behaviour, while the BBC says it takes duty of care extremely seriously.
But Amanda Abbington says she and her family are now being subjected to "brutal, relentless and unforgiving" abuse by Strictly fans.
She is about to appear in a new play, about the aftermath of abuse in a family, called "When it Happens to You" at the Park Theatre in London. I met her there at rehearsals.

There is a MASSIVE issue of misogyny in society. How many men recieve rape and death threats for not towing the line or expressing the "wrong opinions". Women are not listened to and are continuously treated with contempt. Big love to Amanda Abbington. ❤
@mygoogle1482
@mygoogle1482 Месяц назад
Why in society? this was very very specific to the bbc their culture and work. People should not extend their hatred of men to see misogyny around every corner by extending this to every women/ man. If the male dancer has bullied her and subjected her to the abuse she’s claimed, which I believe from the media toxicity that rules the bbc. This is an individual enabled by a broken culturally company. The real issue here is why so quiet for so long when this abuse has gone on for years. Less emblematic of society than of the bbc. What many men are hugely frustrated by and women is the falseness of the virtue signalling woke bs many adopt.

When do you hear of any male receiving hundreds of threats for sharing the same opinions? You don't. Amanda saying "..trying my hardest every week.. to make that room a nicer a place" is typical of how a victim of an abuser behaves - initially you believe that you're making the abuser react in a negative way, so there must be something wrong with you, you try harder and harder to please them and behave in a way that doesn't offend them, but no matter what you do, it doesn't work. He sounds like a typical narcissist. These folk have two faces and if you've only ever been exposed to the charming side, you'll have a hard time believing how nasty they can be. The footage of physical abuse from another pro only came to light because of this investigation that is under the public eye. And Producers saw footage of Amanda and Giovanni's training and said "sorry" but didn't act on it. It's a sad situation, but maybe media pressure was the only way BBC would seriously look into allegations of bullying.

Not unhinged, not unstable but justified and simply human. It is NEVER ok to make another person feel this way, no matter the reasons. Good people nurture others and do not degrade and put them down. You have done what you know to be morally the right thing in reaching out and so need not feel any shame. I am a big strictly fan and was shocked to hear about how bad things were. This does not make me think less of those coming forwards nor does it make me think less of the show as a whole. It's got to the point now where the celebs have basically got to be professional dancers to make it through to the final weeks. Yes, its true that we did hear a story about Janette encouraging a risky move to one of her partners, but the abuse scandal is about male teachers towards their female partners. Not sure why Amanda devalues her experince by saying "if it had just been me" - even if it had, that is still cause to take her seriously and investigate. Its like when the news report deaths. They say things like "20 were killed" - well if even 1 was killed its still horrific.

Watching this, I can clearly see that it's more than that. It almost doesn't matter what it was because it was bad for her, regardless, and that's what actually matters. If they do release the footage people will still fall into opposing camps. I second this thank you for the comment. Self reflection is rare and not praised enough. I have felt similarly before until further evidence came out, and I wondered why did i instinctively choose to dismiss someone's statement? I think one reason why this happens is our gut reaction = "i like them, it can't be true!" It is simpler to disbelieve a person who says something to different to wjat we think we know about a person or situation. It is harder to listen and rethink how we view someone or question what we know because it makes us uncomfortable. So thanks again for your comment 💜

I personally think the way she has been treated by the press and the public is absolutely disgraceful. I'm all for fairness and hearing both sides of a story, but the narrative from so many as soon as she left the show and then subsequently made her complaint was that she is a liar, a fantasist, and just didn't want to work hard. Nobody who has been making these kind of comments were there with them so know that for a fact, and this sends a terrible message to women (and indeed men) who are in abusive situations that if they come forward they will be vilified and disparaged and not taken seriously. Giovanni deserves to have his say of course, but I do find it interesting that he is so against the footage of the rehearsals being seen.

There have been at least 6 other people complain and he won’t release footage….says it all. Unbelievable there are women (and men) who are calling her a liar. You don't have to like her to believe her. I believe her. As someone who has been through similar, her reactions and responses seem completely genuine to me. So much criticism of why didn't she do this, or say that. Well to those people, you clearly have not experienced abuse, and for that you should be grateful, but you need to do more to understand, instead of blaming the victims, because you then become part of the culture which allows abusers to keep getting away with it.

As a survivor of abuse, I'm saying she's a liar. She went into the show with an agenda, and I think she planned this all along to boost her career. She's Amber Heard all over again

@@vermilliongecko looking forward to the footage coming out or him owning up. Hard work and emotional abuse are VERY DIFFERENT and working hard does not mean being made to feel absolutely shite is acceptable.as a survivor of ACTUAL ABUSE myself as well I would be horrified if my family and friends had said to me "you just underestimated how hard a relationship was, you didn't work hard enough" I also hope any of your friends or family never have to come to you if they are in this situation. You wouldn't believe them. She doesn't deserve the death threats and the amount of backlash from this would not have been considered lightly just to promote a play??! Get a grip. I don't want to talk about this any longer thank you.

@@lisamgreenleaf Tell you what, why don't you hold your breath until the footage comes out. A romantic relationship that you're talking about is not the same as an adult student - teacher relationship. I believe my friends and family because they're trustworthy people who don't lie for attention. However, I have a family member with a personality disorder who absolutely does lie for attention, and has done so for 30+ years. So I know what a liar looks like. No-one should get death threats, but again, we've only got her word that they happened. If you don't want to talk about it, stop replying. It's that simple.

It should not matter who you are or what money you make if you behave disgustingly you should be held accountable.
