The poem Amanda is about a young girl, who is constantly being criticized and instructed by her parents, therefore she feels suffocated and dreams and fancies of freedom on one hand and is jilted out of her fantasy into reality by her mother’s/ father’s instruction son the other hand. Their instructions appear like dictates on what to do and what not to do. This poem comments on the parents who have a tendency to preach and instruct so much that the suffocate children and make them escapists. We may conclude that the young girl here represents all the young girls/boys who are growing up with controlling authoritarian parents, who constantly nag and don’t give enough space to children to develop, pushing them into their worlds of fantasies, that is an escape from the torture of the real world.
