You probably recognize Amanda Marshall best for songs like Birmingham, Dark Horse or Everybody's Got A Story. Marshall's music has been inescapable on Canadian radio for more than 20 years. But during that time, she sort of disappeared. Now, she's back with a new album, Heavy Lifting. Marshall tells Tom Power why she's been gone so long, what it was like to have Elton John talk about her music on TV in the early days of her career, and what it's been like to be mixed race in the music industry.

I'm sooo glad she's back. Amongst the most powerful voices ever. Absolutely criminal what the music biz did and tried to do to her and with her (tried to turn her into a "pop diva"). She an absolutely brilliant blues and R&B singer. Play to your strengths, Amanda.

In 1995 I left my abusive marriage and moved to a city where no one knew me. I spent 6 years in a horrible custody battle. Hardest years of my life 😞 I listened to Amanda Marshall through those years. Her music soothed my Soul and eased my weary Heart! I wish I could afford her concert this summer in Winnipeg. Either way I will still keep listening to her ! Her music is magic ❤ that she’s back!!

Amanda Marshall is such a good artist and her contribution to the 90's Canadian music scene is undeniable. It's unfortunate how "Birmingham" was the only song of hers to break onto the US charts. So awesome to see her again and creating new songs!! Great interview.

I saw Amanda open for John Mellencamp in the 90s in Detroit. Between acts we went into the concourse to cruise the merch tables and use the facilities. She came on and her awesome, powerful voice echoed off the theater walls and into the concourse. We all ran like we were late for a flight back into the theater to watch her amazing show. The next day I went out and bought her first CD. Still have it to this day!!

I first saw her open for Tom Cochrane in Saskatoon. I didn't know who she was till she sang "Birmingham" and realized I had heard the song on the radio. We were in the 4th row of the Centennial Auditorium and she came out and absolutely blew us away!! We heard this super powerful voice coming out of this tiny little woman and I instantly said to myself "This woman is a Star already, the rest of the world just doesn't know it yet!!" I bought the CD and played it to death! I have been wondering for the last 20 years what the hell happened to Amanda Marshall?? It is a shame she has not been able to share her amazing talent with the world all this time, but I am sure glad she is back recording and entertaining!! A beautiful Canadian Gem!! Welcome back Amanda!!

I found Amanda's music in a very unusual way: The US professional figure skater Rosalyn Sumners used "Beautiful Goodbye" for one of her most well-known professional programs back in the 90s, and I loved the song immediately and sought out the CD. So I also found her from a song that was not a single. I loved all of Amanda's albums and I'm so happy to see her finally back. I didn't know until today that she has a new album out so I am off to listen to that, and may have to buy the physical CD to go with the first three just for old times' sake 🙂

This interview was so candid and wonderful…to hear her tell her story. I have followed her career since when she was playing at the Horseshoe Tavern. Became immediately obsessed with her voice, her vibe! Her CDs are on repeat on weekends. No one is allowed to speak (just sing) when her music comes on in the car. I went to the concert last Friday. 6 songs in, she was facing the band and by the time she turned around, the audience was giving her a standing ovation, including me. It brought tears to my eyes for her to see how much we missed her and adore her.🫶🏻 Welcome back you beautiful and mega-talented soul! Can’t wait to hear more and more new music! xoxo❤

You were one of my favourite singers in your heyday mostly because of your authenticity and sincere feelings about what you were (and are) singing. Same as the advice given you that "records are business and the stage is soul" you definitely are all SOUL. I am a romantic and I just loved when you would slow down and sit on a stool and sing "Marry me". And also, I have over the years reminded myself, especially in these difficult times, that "Everybody has a story that could break your heart..." Telling stories...You and Bon Jovi...Take care and welcome back...Oh by the way...I think you have a similarity to Rita Coolidge who was also one of my favourite singers. Ciao for now. Linda

Rain on me and fall from grace have been staples of my guitar playing for years. My voice in no way shape or form does it any justice. Was just a way to share music I loved. So glad to hear she is at it again.

So glad to hear she is back! I saw her, Oh geez I guess I was 15 or 16 and she was one of the artists who played the Ontario leg of Much's Great Canadian Party. I was a pretty hardened headbanger and I had no idea who she was but I was absolutely blown away when she started singing. I remember, a lot of dudes in the crowd were yelling some pretty derogatory garbage at all the female performers that day, but even they shut tf up when she was up there. She sang Hendrix's Castles Made of Sand and it was so powerful that 30 years later I still remember it - pretty sure Jimi would've tipped his hat to her performance. Her CD seemed a little out of place wedged between Loverboy and Metallica, lol, but her talent is unbelievable 😊

That was a great interview, Tom. I've always been a fan of Amanda Marshall's. There's not a lot of true voices that are distinctive and can cut through anymore. Although I'm a little sad to be a Dave now. ;)
