Amanda Tapping, the Grand Empress of Sci-fi shares her struggles with self-worth. She also dives in to discuses where she believes the 'Me Too' movement needs to go.
Same here, because of the character she played, how she played it I considered myself as a "feminist" back in the day..... But since the show ended that kind a role models died and been forgotten. Nowadays you can not find somebody with the same caliber and dignity. Now I love her even more. I wish she would receive more support and maybe will direct a few episodes of the new Stargate seasons (fingers crossed)
This is such an honest/genuine take. Thanks for sharing Amanda. I’ve worked in the best and worst of worlds. I’ve been told that “I’m sorry you think you can do that job but we don’t believe it’s fit for a woman” to “we’ve seen what you’re capable of from afar and want to help you accomplish so much more”. Painting everyone with a broad brush in this situation is helping no one. It’s sad that people made you feel like you were not strong enough but the clarity and boldness you show in this very video prove that you’ve had that strength all along (no matter what other people say). ❤️
Samantha Carter is one of those characters you have to like and respect. But I don’t believe she would be the same character if Amanda wasn’t playing her. Amanda is a wonderful actor and a big part of Carter is Amanda Tapping.
Awesome. As the father of two strong and smart and powerful daughters, this message is SO important. "Give us a level playing field, not just because we are women. Give us a level playing field because we are human beings."
Well, as everywhere, there are "branches". A branch of undervalued billied women, branch of women with their not really ill, but maybe business and political intentions, and a branch of man hating psychopaths. Human kind is too young to agree on things and to cohabitate peacefully, so let's hope we manage our ploblems in a civil way, because the only alternative way is war. War without winners. Men might win the battle, but eventually lose anyway, with a tag of aggresor. Let's not do this. Let"s act like better ascended beings. Let's care for each other. Do not let just women fight this war, help them against inappropriate behavior from both men and women. Stay civil, every morning, try to repeat just one God's commandment: Try to not be a cunt today (credits to Jim Jeffries for that one)
She is one of the sweetest, smartest, and kindest public figures ever! I loved her in all her roles and as a real person she seems even more amazing! ❤️
Her playing Sam Carter probably has saved my life when I was relentlessly mocked in school, because "girls should do art or languages, not science". She is an incredible role model for girls and women and this video makes it even clearer.
When I didn't think I could love her any more than I already do. So bummed I couldn't go meet her at the convention this past weekend but so genuinely happy I grew up with Samantha Carter as my role model and yes Amanda, you are as strong as those women you play or you'd never be able to portray that!! Everyone's power stems from somewhere different and everyone's power is unique. Thank you for the constant inspiration, I needed this today.
Oh wow, to me Amanda Tapping has always been SO beautiful and SO talented - in some ways it hurts to think that underneath it all she was suffering, because she always comes across as such a truly NICE person. Bless you, Amanda, you're the best and you've certainly given me many, many hours of thoroughly enjoyable entertainment ... without my ever wondering if underneath it all you were a showbusiness bitch. Be sure you have a VAST fan base, I promise you!
Wow. Lady, you never fail to impress and inspire me. I've admired you for so long. From a distance, and meeting you in person and seeing how you treated people I care about. The world NEEDS voices like yours. Please don't ever be quiet.
Holly crap .. what kind of world do we live in today? We have so damn far to go and that's an understatement. I love that I'm married to a strong and vibrant woman and blessed with a daughter just like her beloved mother. What Amanda experienced is just so wrong, cruel and beneath humanity. Amanda you for certain are a beautiful, talented and most of all intelligent endearing woman.
I'm glad she made the distinction between angry blaming and the desire to be treated equally. had no idea about her insecurity though. Brave of her to bare her soul
I was moved by Ms. Tapping's eloquent and heartfelt call for equality...especially needed in this time of dark 'leadership' and incivility. As a man...as a human being...I stand behind her and all her sisters (and brothers).
This woman is directly responsible for teen-me learning astrophysics and getting better math grades. Here I am, nearly 40, re-watching Stargate SG-1 and getting to know the human behind that character that means so much to me and finding such a wonderful woman.
Man, hearing that Amanda struggles with self esteem was mind blowing. The entire stargate cast were big role models for me as kids, hearing that she's human after all puts a lot of perspective on my perceptions as a younger man.
She is one of the better actresses and people in real life. She wants a genuine solution and a peaceful outcome where everyone can be in harmony together. Not continuous negativity, and a vengeful "I was wronged so I'm now going to nail everyone to the wall" type attitude. Love you Amanda!
Very tough to say anything to add to this brilliant video. As she correctly pointed out, when you become a public figure like this people project their hopes and aspirations onto you but in her case that didn't diminish her self doubt. Let me just say this Amanda, I once met you and asked you for a small favour and you stepped up without missing a beat. No ego, no quid pro quo, just instant generosity. You were charming, helpful, intelligent, and a complete and total inspiration. I wish you nothing but total success in your goal of balancing the equation of life. (And to any producers out there, you'd be damn lucky to have her on your team.)
Thank you for this! Amanda is one of my favorite actors/people. I love that she talked about this cuz that’s how I feel. How so many feel. She encourages me to keep moving and being a decent person. I could go on but thank you again.
Ms tapping is an amazing actor followed her career since sg1 to Atlantis and others im very proud of her and her efforts but in all fairness i think her roll in sanctuary was so strong no one else could fill her shoes in atlantis sanctuary or sg1 shes very motivated and a shining star and more ty for so much pleasure and entertainment you have given and lol tell rodney we miss him lol
Wow Thank you Amanda I have always had great respect for you as a actor, director and strong role model for my three daughters Your straight forward candor is so refreshing. I applaud you for doing this video and being so real Keep leading well. Your comments are bright spot and show us how you can defy the odds and set things in to proper balance again Lead on and beat wishes in all you do
Awesome commentary and as a man, I don’t feel threatened by this and cannot understand why there were 6 thumbs down on your video. I am not writing this because you are a sister of one of my favorite running buddies but as someone who has worked in a women’s world for over 36 years. I’m lucky to have lived with a woman who has taught me for 40 years to understand your point and I’m sorry that you have gone through what you have in your career. This country is going through a wake up call presently. It went through it in my adolescence with the Civil rights movement. Your point is well taken. I wish you well and only hope the years ahead work with your dream. I enjoyed your video.
She is a true hero for standing up and sharing her story and saying it straight to the point. That takes moxie! "Me too" doesn't "me only", but for a while it seemed to go into that direction. It means that "I, too have a voice and deserve a chance", and she put it beautifully & went straight to the point without sugar-coating it.
Honestly, this is an actual great message. Thank you Amanda. Watched SG1 growing up and those characters truly impacted me in some way or another. The characters and you guys. Carter - we need more characters like her in media nowadays.
Miss Tapping you are a great woman role model and so are your characters. I have loved the episodes you have directed. And you have great presence wether you goof around (you are so funny) or are being serious. I love your work and your interviews. I hope you inspire many other women to be themselves.
I believe there is no one on this earth that has the right to criticize another Amanda tapping is one of the most beautiful woman on TV I look at her as a role model I think she’s beautiful inside and out you go girl keep up the good work
Dear God, how could such a talented, intelligent and charming person have such insecurities? Shame on those who demean and detract from others so grievously - but that says more about them….. It just goes to show we are always growing, evolving and developing across the breadth and depth of our skills and traits - and by helping each other we fulfil our potentials to their fullest, for collective Good, all thanks… to each other…. A Fantastic message from Amanda. What a wonderful role model, artist and person she is. Respect ✊ Sister. “If you find yourself going through hell, keep going.“ - Winston Churchill And it looks like we all go there at some stage in our lives….. the trick is to keep on keeping on until getting out the other side (but we learn so much on that part of the Journey through Life…..). Thanks for this. Such sharing puts things into clearer perspective for me personally. Thanks for this 🙏😊🖖
thank you thank you thank you for saying that so well. You are more beautiful and powerful than you have realized. Never let what others say about you, good or bad, define who you are. You hear your own voice more than anyone else's. What we say about ourselves is ultimately the most important voice of all.
Always been a fan of Tapping. She showed me what kind of women are worth my time. She also taught me I have a lot to work towards, to be worthy. Double edged sword, really. Still. I know what I want. This is a woman. One we should desire. One we ought seek to be.
I stumbled on this video while looking up some Stargate episode names and character names to use as server/computer names for fun, since Stargate is one of my favorite television series. I immediately thought.. oh no, please, Amanda, please don't "ruin" Carter with some radical me-too too-far movement crap... Then, I listened. Wow. Amanda, you are NOT an impostor. Your conceptualization of "me too" is very pragmatic, respectful, and constructive. Thank you for being a voice of reason for humans ;) You would make "Carter" proud!
Amanda you are awesome and such an intelligent woman. I was Army once and so identified with Samantha Carter as a young woman. You will never know the influence your character had in such a positive way. Now we are women of a certain age, 50 ish in my case, an you see this issue as clear as I do, but put into words so intelligently, my hat's off to you Amanda. I'm the mother of a son and a daughter and would like to live in a world where my daughter is not anyone's victim, but where my son is not made to pay for the sins of others....a fair, respectful playing field....I could not have said it better....long live the intelligent mind😎.
She's such a good actress that you never would sayed that she is a person, who has or had a problem with self-esteem. I loved her character Samantha Carter in Stargate SG-1 because this character was so smart.
What a fantastic person with a truly eloquent understanding of the situation. There’s such a danger that things will go too far the other way, and be more damaging in the long run than doing nothing at all. We need more people like Amanda that just radiate genuine human feeling and intelligence. And she is still so beautiful!
Amanda, I heard your video...You know as a man who hires women I am proud of you and women like you. You and women like you make my business as professional as it is. In fact women like you has made my business a better place. By the way you were great In the Star Gate show. I was sad when they were over. Any plans for a comeback? Thanks for all you did for Sufi. Eddie
"Being beautiful & powerful in our own authentic way"... love the message. I've noticed in life that the pendulum needs to swing to the other extreme before it settles into a state of balance... that state you are talking about... so let's just keep doing our part. Very inspiring 👏
Amanda Tapping is and will always be awesome. She gets it. Uplifting yourself, bettering yourself, asking for equal treatment and respect doesn't mean that you have to hate everybody else or a class of people who you deem to be the "enemy" based on your past experience with others like them. That's something that these screaming lunatic extreme leftist man hating women out there need to understand. By vilifying every man solely based on him being a man, you actually lose respect. I work in tv and live concert production and you earn your respect by workin your ass off and being great at what you do.. And it is absolutely possible to be great and not be a vengeful, hate filled asshole. You'll gain more allies when you're good at your craft and a decent person. People will actually walk thru fire and fall on their proverbial swords for you if you earn their respect the right way... regardless of if you're a man, woman or intergalactic space gerbil from PX-3287..
Amanda it's so refreshing who you actually are and you're so brave to go on camera and let people know that part of your life Bravo people who are long-time fans like only admire you more thank you
1 of the best female actresses on tv. The challenge as a "new" director being questioned is warranted. But time and actions proved her decisions. I would follow her!!
I've always loved your work and now I understand more about who you are and now I love you as a person. Thanks for this and all your great work on both sides of the camera.
Well said Amanda!! I feel the exact same way, I just want a level playing field for all!! I would never have thought that you had fought with self-worth but at the same time it's not surprising because most of us who have those struggles hide it well. You are much stronger than you think you are and you have done some wonderful things to make this world better for all of us!! Keep it up!!
Amanda, you are the strong, beautiful, clever and talented person you have always been. You have always been a wonderful role model, as an amazing actress, a brilliant director and a truly wonderful person. You have always truly been an inspirational person. Love you loads.
That's it! I just ask for my son and daughter to have the same chances to become whatever makes them happy. We should stop putting labels on people (gender, age, wealth, weight etc.) to prevent us from making the effort to get to know them deeper. Carter was all the way lovely, Magnus felt as looking at myself on the mirror, but when I watched this vid... I wish I were like you Amanda.
Why is this still such a huge problem? All these guys that post bile and hatred of women...in gaming, in politics, etc...don't they have mothers, sisters...women they love? Amanda Tapping...I told my little nieces to watch SG-1 because of you. Everything you brought to Samantha Carter are exactly what little girls should see, and you should be proud.
The character in Star Gate played by you would be impossible to duplicate in real life. Your incredible acting portraying Samantha Carter is absolutely amazing. This would be a very difficult part for any actress to convincingly portray. I assume fellow actors and actresses on the set were very supportive. As far as your ability to direct your work speaks for itself in Dark Matter. Thank you for sharing your imposture syndrome feelings due to intense criticism and psychological rape.
Amanda blimey you are a beautiful and strong lady, just feel so proud of yourself, all the best and just I don't know what has gone on but just respect to you.
wow so nice for a female to say how metoo is backfiring. I been saying it from the get go. her ideas sound great. thank you for sharing your past experiences. As a male who works in the industry i'm going to try my hardest to not be gender bias when it comes to assumed skills.
Omg Amanda I love you even more than I loved Sam Carter as a kid. You actually managed to surpass that role of "feminist icon" as your real authentic off-camera self beyond what you had done playing a fictional character who had been especially designed to fit in to that role.
My mom was telling me this for years as I remember her. I'm 53 and still strive to find a good mate like a strong woman like Amanda. Still searching. Might try to compromise.
I don't know why amanda thinks like this ? ,when i watched her play sam carter in sg 1 i recon she played that part amazingly and she is a outstanding actor i love her as an actress and she seems like a lovely person too
Men experience the same shit as women, it just shows itself in a slightly different way. Amanda... You have no reason to doubt yourself. You are fantastic. Look at your achivements, no one can take that away from you. And last.. as an old stargate fan, one can fake it one time, but you did an incredible job 10 seasons in a row + the movies Had you been awfull, then you would have been writen out of the series, but you weren't, and every stargate fan knows why! Keep up the good work ;)
I find her strong and gentle at the same time All women need to be strong but never let men get you and then again we have the same insecurities as you women we just don't show around other people and some of us men can't hide it around women to me at least they never back down we have more in common than we really like to think As for the He-man attitude i don't really care for it as man myself i just try to be me and having two sisters and my mom i learned alot from them For the rest of you will have to figure it out yourself but your never alone
I never would have guessed someone so talented could harbor so much fear and doubt in herself. I've seen her in so many interviews and com a con panels I just assumed Sam's strength as a character was just the projection of Amanda.
