Amandla Stenberg talks candidly about race, blackness and The Hate U Give - TIFF Press Conference

The Hate U Give, based on the book by Angie Thomas, premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. It stars Amandla Stenberg (Rue from The Hunger Games, Everything Everything), Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, Common, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, K. J. Apa, and Lamar Johnson. It is directed by George Tillman Jr and adapted by Audrey Wells.
PLOT: Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right.
The Hate U Give is released in the US on the 19th of October, 2018 and in the UK on the 26th of October.

Interesting how KJ identifies as white considering he's also Samoan which is sometimes considered a minority in Australia. I guess it's different in New Zealand, as they tend to be more accepting and one of the least prejudiced places in the world. Maybe it's because he's a quite pale mixed race man who for all intents and purposes looks white.

I honestly felt bad for sabrina first bc she's playing a racist character second she's treated like she's not an important part of the movie(which is actually, technically racist)

It’s not racist at all. She’s NOT an important role. Big Mav, Starr, Khalil, Seven, Sekani etc THOSE are important roles. How could you take this brilliant movie with such a brilliant message and turn it negative. “ awe, the white girl wasn’t the main character. So racist “. That’s disgusting.

@@honestyfirst978 Even if there's a part of her that's white, you can't deny the part of her that's black. Generally speaking, no she could never pretend having it harder than a black (not mixed raced) person or a person who's darker than her, but she still valid. Bi-racial people tend to experiment this struggle of never really be accepted by white people and also never really be accepted by black people... so to whom they can identify with?
