Had to check your video again on Amaryllises, live in zone 6a and found a surprise in our back area. When we moved in May the area was full of green leaves but nothing happened, they died back and disappeared. Then this weekend the tall stalks appeared and are now blooming, Amaryllises are a peach/pink.

My uncle lives out in the desert. He has amaryllis plants planted in a north facing planter where they get some morning sun but shade from the brutal afternoon sun. He places pistachio nut shells all around his plants. Don’t know if there’s something about those shells but his bulbs come up each and every year absolutely beautiful . Perhaps for decades.

I was given an Amaryllis for Christmas about three years ago. And I was too lazy to open the box and plant it. Weeks later I finally opened the box and found a tiny shrivelled plant - little leaves, little dried up flower, dried out bulb. I felt so guilty I immediately planted it and belatedly nurtured it. Nothing much happened, except a few leaves here and there. But now - EASTER - and I have two lovely blooms. I'm amazed how tough they are.

Thanks Jo for your comment. I just purchased couple of bulbs on clearance at Tractor supply for less than $4.00 each which also had dried up flowers and little leaves. You have given me encouragement that my purchase was not in vain. I love rescuing plants!!

You can plant these in the ground. I put mine in a little flower bed that is right beside a wall on the house. When cold weather comes in it just kinda dies down, but it comes back in the spring. This year it had 4 of the biggest red blooms I've ever seen. This little flower bed is kind of in a frost free zone. I even have strawberry begonia and an airplane plant that spreads like wild fire. I live in northern MS in zone 7.

Mine have many bulbs at this point and less flowers - they’re rather elderly. My biggest issue is that it seems I can no longer let them summer outdoors because squirrels eat the leaves. That means they don’t get a chance to develop the nutrients needed for blooming.

Always remove the pollen from the blooms - even a bit can cause irreparable kidney failure in cats. Pollen makes a mess too, and I've heard removing it can prolong the bloom time.

I don't know if you'll see this and I definitely don't expect you to answer every single question you get in the comments but I'm asking anyway...just in case! I have an amaryllis that surprised me with a bloom last January. It hasn't bloomed this year but I neglected to let it go dormant so I won't be surprised if it doesn't at all. I'm wondering why the leaves, which grow long and have great color, get so heavy, hang down and occasionally break off at the base from the weight. Yours, and many others I've seen, are so strong and standing almost straight up! I have a few other small amaryllis bulbs that were babies from the aforementioned one that do the same thing with their leaves. Maybe I need to fertilize?
@gardenanswer
@gardenanswer 7 лет назад
Hello! :) Usually the leaves will go limp if they aren't getting enough light or the right amount of water. A little fertilizer or repot, certainly wouldn't hurt though!

My boyfriend just bought me a red amaryllis with 4 flowers. I trimmed them as they were dying off. I trimmed them as you instructed in this video. I do have one question though. It came in a pot with holes at the bottom so when I water it, it leaks. I have this beautiful pot I’d like to transfer it to but it doesn’t have holes at the bottom for runoff. Is it ok to transfer it to the pot without holes? Thanks!

How many years does an amaryllis plant take to grow large enough to produce a bloom? I have several I have raised from seeds that are about 5 yrs old. My daughter gave me the mother plant 6 yrs ago and she has bloomed 4 times since. I gathered seeds last spring and have 4 healthy little ones growing. I also live in zone 5 but I have never put my mature plants outside for fear of them drying out. Live in SW Colorado and our sun is very intense. We have no root cellar and our basement is half above ground so I have no cold place for them to be dormant. Can they be taken out of the pots and wrapped in newspaper and placed in a refrigerator? I do have a refrigerator in our garage but I cannot put the full pot inside it.
@marylindasmith8503
@marylindasmith8503 2 года назад
Yes, you can put in the fridge during the dormant period, but don't allow any apples to be there also as they will supposedly make the bulbs unable to flower (not saying it the way I learned it, but that's close enough). Watch several videos as you will keep learning.

I also found 2 small bulb with leaves and 2 that does not have leaves yet. I transfer it in a pot together with other small amaryllis bulbs and after a week or 2 i saw a flower stalk.. i leave here in the Philippines what will be the next step and do i need it to put in dormancy also? I just leave it on a sunny and open area receives 6 am to 12 pm direct sun

@StevieinSF
@StevieinSF 3 года назад
I'm sure they thrive in Louisiana due to the humidity and summer heat. My Mom planted 1 red/white variegated Amaryllis bulb back in 1973 and now a lovely patch of them that come back every year since then. They've survived droughts, 100+ summer temps and not much care until about 2 years back when I started maintaining them. Only water them occasionally and fertilize with epsom salt and coffee grounds once in a while. (Inland Southern California)

I planted my bulb out side in the garden and dug it out in October. It had produced really large leaves in a big fan over the summer. The bulb had long rots on it. I shook off all the soil, put it in my cold closet in a paper bag but forgot to get it out until April! It had a bloom bud, I cut off a lot of the roots so it fit in my pot, and a month later, I have several large leaves and six blooms! So beautiful.

I’m waiting on a warm day to put them in the ground.

Once the bloom is over, I re pot them in a very large and deep pot usually 6 to 8 bulb per pot and put them outside like you and feed heavily. I bring them in September and continue to let them grow year round and the bulbs get huge. I have several big pots so I only let one pot go dormant per year and do as you do and the blooms are great.

*Beautiful ~ thanks for your help! I don't think I knew that some people don't expect this flower to re-bloom! Mine is entering its third Christmas season,* and this past year, it actually bloomed twice (December-ish 2020 and the spring time 2021). As I reflect on it, my plant's 'dormancy' period was probably be 'ignoring' it on an indoor window ledge (facing the westside of my home that got lots of shade in the spring and summertime), with very infrequent watering. Not sure what effect this makes, but I also don't trim or cut the stalks, which grow all year long. I am now getting ready for it to bloom again ... around THIS Christmastime! Great content!!!♥

So excited to start the dormancy process for my amaryllis! I made a beautiful centerpiece of 5 bulbs last year. (TY for the inspiration.) Have enjoyed their long strappy leaves in their container all summer. They've been in a spot w/ AM sun and dappled shade in afternoon. (For ref. we're a zone 7b/8a.) Calendar just reminded me to pull them in and start the dormancy. I fertilized a few times over the summer, but not as often as I would have liked. Hope they do OK and come back strong. Going to be tough to find a cool, dimly lit spot to put them in for the next 8 weeks. The only place in my house that is 55 degrees right now is the red wine fridge ;) and i'm not sure the amaryllis will fit in there. Any suggestions?

I simply allow my amaryllis to dry in late October by removing from the soil and drying in brown paper. Cut the dead foliage off, repot and it blooms reliably EVERY year. Then, when blooms are done, I repot and put outside after last frost as a patio plant. Repeat in October.

How long do you allow to dry out before repotting?
@judyrobinson5044
@judyrobinson5044 3 года назад

@@leannedickinson7551 This year's flower is likely gone. BUT--if possible just buy another to enjoy for THIS year. The one with the stalk snapped will continue to grow, lots of green foliage. Then in fall of next year give it a dormant time(I wrap in brown paper in late fall oil foliage dies down) and start watering again. It will bloom for you. But yah--this year's flower is likely gone--sorry

I have been doing this routine, except I cut off all the greens in early September, clean off the bulbs , and store in paper bags in the basement, starting them again around NOV 1ST. I always get new leaves and I get new flowers about 75% of the time. I don't like the way the leaves look, and in late spring, early summer, hide the pots in spots around my garden. I am in Zone 7, but last year I was surprised to discover one blooming among a bed of ivy. I didn't plant it, but probably threw an anemic looking bulb in the bed. Sometimes nature is a better gardener than me.

Hi Brenda - I'm so glad to see a comment posted by someone who grows amaryllis in their landscape! I'm in zone 10 and had no idea amaryllis can grow in our zone, so I'm excited give it a try this year. Do you have yours planted in full sun? I assume since your bulbs are in the ground, you don't put them in a basement to go dormant - is that right, and if so, do they still rebloom for you?

@@brendajernigan7642 You guys (and E. Oregon for that matter) definitely get hammered during the summer with those temps! 😓 Some friends that moved out there made a funny comparison - in Fla, the moment you step outside you feel like you're in a rice cooker... but when a breeze blows during the Tx summer, you feel like you're in a convection oven 😂 I'm more worried about the our solar radiation, tough. I figure if our sun wasn't harmful for amaryllis bulbs, they'd be in everyone's landscape (I don't think I've ever seen them in residential or commercial landscapes). I guess worse case, I can try keeping them as house plants like Laura or just chucking them after they bloom. Here's hoping! 🤞🏼

I brought home two clearanced amarylis bulbs called minerva that i bought because i figured even if dead they were in nice ceramic pots and only 4.oo. bulbs were totally white but still had some firmness so i planted and keeping them on a sunny window. To my amazement the one more shriveled up and had white leaves about one inch turned green in a few days. The other one took a week to start getting leaves but they both are working on growing. Since they were so stressed do i need to give a boost of fertilzer? And since they are in growth mode im assuming no dormancy, thats what they are coming out of. But maybe the one thats slow to get leaves should sit out blooming? Or just let them do there thing?.

I have read so many articles/care guides on this but this is probably the best and most informative thing I've come across. 😄 All the articles talk about them blooming during summer and I'm like... But what if it's blooming in December what do I do then? Is "summer care" still valid for summer? 😆 This answered my questions, so thank you. Now I am a little more confident I can actually take care of my amaryllis after it's done blooming, even if it won't necessarily get to bloom next year. It hasn't bloomed yet since I bought it from the store about 10 days ago but I already decided then I wasn't just going to toss it after Christmas, that I would take up the challenge to try to get it to bloom again.

I just have to divide every 2 a 3 years regularly but what a surprise when they bloom a dinner plate size. Aside from the beauty of the blooms is that my yard is the only one in the neighborhood that does not have gophers. I read somewhere that the amaryllis puts out an odor that replies gophers so of course I planted to see if indeed it worked. I'm pleased to say that it does.
