Amaryllis - Time to go dormant 

2:41 The bulbs in pots can be left upright. Some people tip the pot over and leave the pot lying on its side to remind themselves that the plant is in its dormancy and should not be watered or taken out into the sun.

I really belief that you shouldn't cut the leafs while they are still green in order to put them into their dormancy period. The main reason for this is because they still use the leafslike their main source of energy and the leafs are the ones that will keep feeding the bulb so cutting the leafs would automatically stop this feeding. however, if you just leave the leafs untouched they will eventually turn yellow naturally and then you can cut them if you want to.

If you think about it for a moment, this thing about letting the leaves die before you cut them back is dumb. Leaves FEED the bulb, not the other way around. The leaves will be giving the most energy to the bulb when they are alive and healthy. If you want the bulb to have more energy, keep watering the plant for another few weeks; there's no advantage (or logic or purpose) to letting them wither.

I completely agree with you however as hard as i tried this plant would not go dormant. it had not gotten water in almost 2 months and it was in its pot baking in the summer sun. i certainly try not to remove the leaves until they are yellow and yucky.

I think that sounds like a wonderful idea for a video... if you made it i would totally watch it :) I have just recently taken my plants out of dormancy. I will upload that video on friday or saturday.. i can already see 1 flower bud on 2 bulbs :) in order to make the bulb bigger you need to give them good light and water and feed regularly.. the dormancy period will shrink the bulb a little But it will plump back up when it soaks up some water and starts into growing again.

FYI…I was reading a few articles and one of them stated that the pot is placed on its side to keep it from collecting any water in the case of rain. 👍🏼

after a 3 or 4 month sleep... they will usually take another 6 or 8 weeks to bloom...

Interesting plant to grow! I like that it's a plant where you can control the timing of it's flowering like that.

That's a good question... if the leaves look like the've been growing for a number of months you can try giving it a dormant period... if it looks like the leaf stage was cut short i would try and have it start growing leaves for a bit

Well they haven't bloomed at all, I was hoping for a spring bloom but I guess it might be a winter bloom if it is all possible. I still have it in a pot .should I take it out of the dirt? It is med size bulb.

you make a great point my friend. i still don't understand why they suggest such a small pot size... just cuz you CAN keep it in a small pot doesn't mean it will do well over the long term.. i usually use whatever i have available.. they can be grown in a smaller space but the watering and feeding needs to increase.. Amaryllis can really soak up the water! to really get the size you need to have the leaves grow and not force it into dormancy

I have a question, I am by no means a skilled gardner of even a carer of plants, I grew my amaryllis from a potted bulb from the supermarket. It currently has 2 very tall stems which have stopped flowering and is growing leaves, should I wait for the leaves to grow (They're only like 2 inches long) and do this then or should I do it now?

flower production is where the bulb will loose a lot of it's size... so we really need to let it grow as long as possible to gain size... maybe that means getting it to bloom every 2 years.

what type of iris are they? german/Bearded? there are a variety of reasons why iris will not bloom

What happens if you just keep it as a houseplant with no dormancy period? Won't it just rebloom each year, albeit not necessarily at xmas time? Or it will it not bloom again without the dormancy?

Hi, I have always put my amaryllis in the fridge for 2 to 3 months in a plastic bag with dry dirt, It seems to work for me. I do get them ready for it like you.

you will need to cut the old flower stems off now.. and let the new leaves grow.. treat the plant like a normal house plant feeding it every 2 weeks or so.. give it as much sun as you can give it :). let the plant grow for about 5 or 6 months.. This is feeding the bulb to produce a bud for next year. then you can follow the steps in this video :) I have many videos on amaryllis for all stages of growth. check them out if you'd like :) good luck with yours :)

i would just cut off the flower spike and let the leaves grow and feed the bulb... let the leaves grow for at least 4 or 5 months or longer... then you can either dig up the bulb for its dormancy or you can cut it back and let it rest till it blooms again.. I would love it if amaryllis were hardy in my area.

I just got a Amaryllis before Christmas and it bloomed on Christmas day :) but the flowers have died off now and I want to make sure i am taking proper care of it. It got a lot of water the past few days because of the rain but I got most of the water out. i would like to start to grow it as an inside plant for the next time it blooms. what do i do with it now? there are leaves growing alongside the stem that had the flowers on it. am i supposed to leave those on?

I know about plant because i went to college . made it to nationals cause i won gold metal for state for demo on how to make a Bonsai. i don't know everything but i know from 1 bulb you can cut it in quarters and have 4 but it is really risku that the bulb may rot before it does anything. I have the LL REDS. as of right now the leaves have got taller than the stalk or flower stem. mine came from walgreens. came in a gold pot

it will produce a bloom from time to time. i had a white one produce a bloom last year as it was in active growth mode.. i thought that was impossible... but plants will do what they want :) i think in their natural habitat the go through a period of draught. it might not be enough to make the plant go dormant but it might be just what makes the plant set buds

It was just a bulb. i forced it into growing using my lights. my father came over and i showed hI'm what it looked like right before blooming. he said it.was.scary i got it ti grow so fast. when he seen it it was just a bulb. they grow fast though. i watched most of it. i can get true green roses to grow like 2" a day. i jave a ton of plants and bonsai. how bout you?

I've had my amaryllis plant for about 3 years it only bloomed the 1st winter I got it. It has not bloom again last year it grew beautiful foliage but no flower. I've not cut the roots out but I've cut the leaves out when I brought it in the house for the winter. This spring I planted in the ground and still no flower. I was told that it should have bloomed this May that it might not like where it's was planted. So I put it back in a pot ,the foliage is green not as long as last year as of yet. My question is do I cut the foliage off and the roots and put it dormant now or what should I do.

cut the leaves off and take it out of the pot and leave it for about 1 month (i leave mine for a week after 2 months of growth because i live in a tropical country) and plant it in december and you should get some blooms

I think I won't induce dormancy then, very soon I will have too many and it seems like a lot of work. I'll let them sleep if they want and just keep the others going.

Depending on your hardiness zone you can do the fridge thing or you can plant outside in the ground so more bulbs will come. or if you like having control of when they bloom keep indoors in a pot of soil and use CFLs for growing them. a 25k is the red ray and used for flowering while the 5k produces a cool blue ray for vegetative or aka green stem and leaf growth. keep lights abou 5 inches from plant. i am in zone 8a and will ne transferring mine to the ground to get more bulbs . this one did perfect this year and grew right when i wanted it too so i would like to have more than just one. i may even sell some. i have the giant species of this plant. i also left the seed pods on after i removed the spent flowers. as you can see. i really want more but i don't want to pay 13 bucks again.

I'd rather wait the leaves mature more than four months in Brazil a tropical country without winter leave the vessel without water equal you teach and the leaves turn increasingly ugly, dry several of 7-9 leaves. The bulb has its accumulated energy in the months that do not grow more leaves, after two months of flowering and leave 3 to 4 months (seven months after sprouting leaves after flowering. If the leaves are cut long before the time the bulb will increasingly smaller flowers and can die. When harvesting the bulbs is very premature every year will be more difficult to give beautiful flowers and die from lack of carbohydrates that are formed after the leaves terminate development after two months. Dead leaves in your case 3 indicate that it is the beginning of the harvest time of the bulb, rather than wait a little longer and enlighten them in artificial light if you live in very cold country like Canada or Alaska USA. if you want to see my videos on youtube, amaryllis flower bpistelli are 25 videos up to seven years together.

Hello. My plant has completed its flowering and is now growing new leaves, but a rather strange looking bulb has started to grow in the place of the flowers that were on the stem - what is it and what do I do? One has died and the other is getting pretty big!! #cautious
