Excellent video! I am using a slitless SA100 Grism now, but hope to graduate to a slit system someday. Thanks for the information.

Very nice videos, great job indeed! Right now I am in the process of doing my first 3D printed spectroscope - an UVEX4, but the next step is to do the spectroheliograph Sol'EX and the upgraded Star'EX, so I will search for your videos with great interest from now one.

Awesome post!! Is there a hardware parts list? I can't find any in the links provided. Thanks for the great info.

Great videos. I have just started capturing spectra with a diffraction grating but would like to get to something more advanced.

Barbara! I remember watching one of your videos with the AAVSO. What an honor to have you here! Stay tuned, the next videos will be much more “hands on”, and will hopefully give you a better idea whether a more complex spectrograph would work for you. Thanks!

If I understood correctly the high res grating has a limited window/bandwidth, and to scan other wavelengths you rotate the grating wheel manually. If you would put a stepper on the grating wheel, could you sweep the wavelengths automatically to get a high res yet broader bandwidth? Maybe record as SER and with the setpoint for the grating stitch the spectra together?
@darkskygeek
@darkskygeek 6 месяцев назад
You could, but you would also need to tweak the focus of the objective lens of the spectrograph at the same time.

Sheyliak 👍. French tech, let the makerz continue.

Is the slit supposed to be inline, ie parallel with the lines on the grating ? How much error can there be in that alignment ? Thanks.
@darkskygeek
@darkskygeek Год назад
The orientation of the slit can be dialed in, it’s part of the initial setup of the spectrograph. Christian Buil covers that on his website and in his videos.

@@darkskygeek Sorry but I'm making a modded version. Can you tell me what it is 'dialed into' ? Are the lines parallel or perpendicular , do you know ?

Just ordered the 3D printed Star’Ex. Where can I get the neon bulb light attachment you have for calibration? Thank you!
@darkskygeek
@darkskygeek Год назад
Hi! I bought the neon bulb in bulk (pack of 100) from Amazon. The attachment itself I designed and 3D printed. See the GitHub repository URL in the video for more details.

Which kit would be best for a 102mm F4.9 refractor?
@darkskygeek
@darkskygeek Год назад
Hi Daniel. First, it is always recommended to start spectroscopy with a high resolution spectrograph. Low resolution spectroscopy is significantly more complex, and using a refractor at F/4.9 is going to be tricky because it likely has a lot of chromatic aberration. With a high resolution Star’Ex, you will need to use a quality Barlow lens with that scope. Don’t hesitate to join the Solex-English mailing list. HTH

I already have Ken Harrison's Optio Slit Wheel for Paul Gerlach's LowSpec . Tony Rodda From the SolexGroup has said he made a modified version to accommodate the wheel and a stepper. I am unable to find his version online or contact him. Any suggestions ?

Hey Joe, I’m not sure I understand what you are asking about. Are you looking to automate turning the grating wheel using a stepper motor? If so, I know that a lot of people have already done it, and I don’t understand why they make such a big deal of it. In high resolution, I rarely look at something other than Ha, and if I do, I just set the wheel manually at the beginning of the night, and that’s it. And in low res, you just set it manually once and you’re done. Do you have a fully remote setup? I don’t think that Star’Ex is well adapted to a fully remote setup. For that, I would look into getting an eShel spectrograph from Shelyak Instruments. Much more expensive, but also quite capable of producing beautiful scientific data. The 2SPOT team in Chile is getting great results with it. HTH

@@darkskygeek I don't think I care about the stepper. The current available files for the StarEx / SolEx use a single slit. I happen to own the OVIO slit wheel from Paul Gerlach's LowSpec. A design by Ken Harrison. I am now however thinking I might rather try the StarEx but I want to use my Ovio Slit Wheel in it. I tracked down the fellow who redesigned the StarEx/ Solex with that slit wheel incorporated and coincidentally a stepper mount, but I'm not sure quite yet if he is sharing the files. If not, I will design my own.

@@SmeeUncleJoe OK, I understand. Yeah, I don't know who that person is or what he/she did. Good luck!
