Great working with you on this! A few tips to keep in mind: -We don't recommend wetting the brush at any step, unfortunately this will remove all the hard work you did of adding the products to the ball and will dry out the leather. -When adding the balm, make sure to put a good, even layer and brush it in before using the heat gun. As you apply the heat you should be able to see the leather change color as the balm is absorbed. If you do not see this you should add more balm, brush it in and then apply heat. -Throughout the season continue to brush your football regularly. You can also apply a light layer of tack conditioner once a month or so to keep the leather hydrated.

This whole process is only intended for a ball that will have a short lifespan like a few plays maybe a game. If you want your ball to last for decades it's best to skip the mudding process because when you start brushing dirt into the pores of the leather you are being counterproductive because the granules of dirt will soak up the conditioner just like sand on motor oil and as soon as those granules of dirt dry out they are looking to soak up more moisture that's why a mudded ball needs constant maintenance with conditioning and the clogged pores don't allow the leather to breathe which is an important factor for longevity of leather. As a consumer I started experimenting with prepping back in the late 80s over a decade before the NFL made prepping the ball a thing. The brushing the shaving cream the mud which is just brown clay the tack bar which is just the beeswax all that good stuff I've experimented with many of products ruined a few balls along the way and one of those ways is by mudding and or over brushing so like I said this method may be good if your 18 and not looking to get much use out of a ball but if you are an everyday consumer it's not the way to go if you want your ball to last

Reading this it just sounds like a lot of work after you've put in a lot of work I can put in a little work like 30-40 min worth and use that ball for years even decades with zero maintenance

If you're watching this video you're probably just a consumer looking for a way to prep the ball that you're going to toss around with your buddies. The purpose of prepping a ball is to make the leather softer and grippier. If you're looking for a cheap alternative way of prepping a ball without it looking like something you found in your grandpa's garage watch my video you can achieve this in 30 minutes without the ball looking like a lump of coal. Something you never hear mentioned in these videos is the fact that if you prep a ball NFL style it adds roughly 10 g of weight and once it starts picking up dirt and oils from use it will get heavier. My way makes the leather soft without altering the color to dramatically a new duke which is reddish will turn brown

What is the best way to soften the seams and point of the ball? This process works great for the panels but there must be something else that softens the seams. Ideas?

I want a leather ball there so expensive tho
@Sportsfan4life
@Sportsfan4life 3 месяца назад
Exactly they are expensive so when you get your hands on one don't age it by 20 years by by doing the prepping process because it will not last very long

Don’t wet your ball and only use football conditioner

How to mess ruin your football smh
@Sportsfan4life
@Sportsfan4life 3 месяца назад
I wouldn't say that it's ruining the ball but it is certainly aging it. What I do is spray shaving cream on the ball and wipe it off with a damp rag and while the ball is still damp take palmer's cocoa butter hand lotion and rub it into the ball it softens the leather better than any leather conditioner I've ever purchased and it gives the ball a nice brown color.
