Playing with dolls is often reserved for our little girls, for fear of exposing our boys to 'girly' activities that could threaten their masculinity.
But what if playing with dolls actually benefits the social and emotional wellbeing of our boys? What if, paradoxically, 'girly' toys actually helps our boys become the best Man they can be? Would more of us let our boys play with 'girly toys'?
Watch this video to get inspired by the benefits of our boys playing with dolls - it's really eye opening!

I’m a father of twin boys. My wife recently introduced a little toy doll to them, and I immediately didn’t like the idea. I expressed how I’d prefer for them to play with action figures instead because I don’t want them to become too feminine. My wife insisted I try, so I took it upon myself to do my own research and stumbled upon your video and it opened my eyes. The book towards the end that you shared sealed the deal for me. Appreciate you sharing this knowledgeable information.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It's refreshing to hear that you were open to researching the benefits before deciding not to allow your child to play with dolls etc. We need more fathers like you : ) I'm so happy that you found this video useful : )

This Ted Talk is excellent and would do the whole world good if shared and listened to widely ! I completely agree with all that you have said. Babies display the same emotional needs, irrespective of gender and we tend to them, yet isn't it so sad that once boys reach a certain age, we expect them to just switch off. This is down to society, cultures and traditions and most of us aren't doing these things to intentionally cause hurt, but an awareness of the detrimental affects that encouraging boys to suppress their emotions can have them is massively lacking. Boys who are taught to suppress their emotions often grow into men who suffer with so many issues that cascade and affect others including their loved ones, friends and careers. Anger problems, violence, bigotry, chauvinism and sadly and seriously suicide. It's a fact that men statistically commit suicide at much higher rates than boys, girls and women do. And I believe that it's down to this. It all starts with play and that's what people don't realise. Children learn so much and make sense of the world through play. Boy's toys are often inanimate and lots of them, although they are great and have a solid place in the world of play (things like toy tool kits and cars) many are inanimate and so they don't encourage much use of emotion and imagination. The book that you used as a good example is a gem, and should be a staple in schools all around, just like how books like 'The hungry caterpillar' and 'the gruffalo' are 😊. Thanks again for this video ❤

Tenika Richardson you’ve warmed my heart as you point out so many truths. I’m so happy that some of us are starting to see the importance and value that toys such as dolls can have on our boys emotional development & self expression. The more people see the value and benefits of imaginative play regardless of gender labelled toys, the better children can FULLY express themselves. Thank you for your kind feedback and support Tenika 💓

Boys often choose the toys they often play with because of their biology. Males usually prefer toys that can do actions like toys with wheels, and females, toys like dolls. The biological reason for boys more often than not wanting to play with trucks instead of dolls is backed up by well affirmed scientific meta analysis studies. There's nothing wrong with boys playing with trucks. You have to understand the real, biological truth well understood by the scientific community that men and women are naturally, fundamentally different because of evolution. Based off of nature, and every primate on earth is like this, females express more of feminine qualities than the male counterparts and vice versa. Do you think the animal kingdom has the capacity to be systemically oppressive, sexist? No. Nature works in the ways it does because it works perfectly, we're all of nature and continuously apart of it.

You realise that the entire reason boys don't usually play with dolls is because it's not their natural inclination/desire. By nature women and men are biologically different and therefore they are often going to desire to make different choices because of that. Biology is a massive influence. I don't think anything that goes against your nature as male or female could ultimately bring good to your life because of the way men and women are wired differently.

I get your prospective. I tend to go by what the child wants. If a boy displays an interest in dolls and teddies I let him play with them. It's been scientifically proven that letting boys explore their more empathic and gentle side through toys including dolls, helps them develop emotional intelligence when they become adults. My daughter loves to play with toy cars and trains just as much as she enjoys her pram and dolls :) I don't limit her ability to explore all ranges of toys.
