🚸 🚼 Did you know that teaching your baby sign language can increase their IQ up to 12 points? Bill White, founder of Happy Baby Signs, and author of Signs of a Happy Baby, has taught more than 14,000 families in the San Francisco Bay Area how to sign with their baby.
According to research and observations, babies that were taught sign language as an early form of communication have faster speech acquisition than babies whose parents use verbal communication to talk to them. Scientists and researchers say that the brain doesn't really care whether you use Enlish, Russian or sign language. It just needs something that can get what it wants.
The brain can process language at a very early age like 6-8 months old. But at this stage the babies still doesn't have the fine motor skill to move their lips and mouth to actually talk and communicate verbally. However, using sign language, like showing their 3 fingers to form the letter "W" to sign water, actually makes it easier for the parent to understand what their toddler wants and also it makes the babies realize that their moms and dads actually understand them and value what they have to say.

When signing, remember that context is important. For example: sign "milk" while feeding your baby a bottle or while nursing-not when you're doing other things. Watch the top five signs to start with at 9:56.

And he transitions well without elaborate breakdowns. He understands when he over reacts and apologizes. I think it’s the best think to routinely teach babies signs.

We taught ASL starting early and it really advanced his language skills. I just love it and can’t wait to teach my next one. I hope parents will give it a try. I couldn’t be more pleased 🎉🎉🎉

Any tips for bilingual? Should we use just one language when signing?

Sign Language is a baby's bilingual bridge between the two verbal languages spoken at home. For example, Mommy says apple and signs APPLE when feeding her baby apple sauce. Pretty soon the baby signs MORE APPLE to request more. Then the partner comes home from work speaking Spanish. Baby doesn’t see partner as much and when the partner says, “¿Quieres mas manzana?” ... the baby thinks …”mas maaa mas maaanzza…what?!” But if the partner says it in Spanish and signs APPLE, the baby thinks …ah ha! Now you are talking my language! Mommy says apple and daddy says la manzana. Got it! It’s like closed captioning for the baby growing up.
