Having studied linguistics, I'm utterly astonished by this animal's ability to mimic mechanical sounds so well. I'd love to learn more about its vocal structure....
@LittleCoolThings
@LittleCoolThings 8 лет назад
Heard about it on NPR. They mentioned that the vocal cords can produce several sounds at once.
@FuzzyPanda962
@FuzzyPanda962 7 лет назад
The basic gist is that they use muscle contractions to squeeze air out of the air sac (like our lungs, theirs are different and spongy) through an enlarged part of the trachea called the syrinx. The syrinx has several kinds of membranes that can be stretched by smaller bundles of muscles inside and outside the airway. A bird like this probably has at least a half a dozen muscle groups inside the syrinx to help make subtle movements. There's some debate as to which membrane does how much. You can read up here for really gory details Goller, F. and O.N. Larsen (1997): A new mechanism of sound generation in songbirds. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 94:14787-14791. I'm studying for a test right now so I've got notes on hand. Hope this helps.

Yeah, the lyrebird's syrinx (the equivalent of our vocal cords) is the most complexly muscled of the passerine birds (i.e. excluding the parrot family). So amazingly accurate; thing might as well be a portable recorder (for oft-repeated sounds, at least).

BarbarianBreed That bird is in a wildlife sanctuary. Don’t be fooled by Attenbourgh’s crap! He pretends he is sneaking through the bush but that bird is accustomed to seeing people. Then he takes recordings of the bird and pretends his team is doing it. And to top off his totally disingenuous rubbish he says the chainsaw sounds are foresters when in fact they are the sounds of construction in the facility. Do you think a Lyrebird in the wild that are very hard to see or approach would be imitating a camera? That bird can do that as it is in close proximity to tourists every day. Believe about half of what Attenbourgh tells you and that may still be too much, he is more of an activist than anything else and will lie to get you onboard.

This bird was filmed near a very popular picnic ground just beyond the outer suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Car alarms, phone ringing, cameras etc are just part of the soundscape. Chainsaws are a common sound. They are used to clear mountain ash gums (that are like skyscrapers) that have been felled naturally. Often across roads and private properties nearby. Rangers possibly use them for maintenance and fire management.

A lot of birds out there can imitate sounds, but you've gotta give the prize to these guys and also corvids. Corvids- like ravens and crows- have the uncanny ability to perfectly mimic speech. If you've seen that one video of the crow saying "you alright, love?" that's no joke. They're like parrots but more coherent.

Despott in most of the "nature films " they are coming to the place with their own animals and film them in their natural environment. After that they bring them back home. so probably this bird lives with other birds in some kind of a zoo or place where they take care od them. (sorry for my english)

I live at the bottom of Tall Timbers road in Winmalee and there is a resident lyre bird that "owns" the ridge behind the house. He mimics all the birds around here and any power tool we have going. It really is just like the video, it's hard not to burst out laughing when you sneek up to him to get a better look. If you want to see this bird, go to the track at the bottom of TT road and start walking down the hill, guarantee you'll see or hear him....Take care everyone

+Scotbot Why dislike? Because it's spreading misinformation. The bird making all the unique sounds is a captive bird that was raised from an egg. Wild Lyre birds do not do this. Could they? yea sure and that does make them incredible. However most people believe that there's a forest full of Lyre birds running around sounding like chainsaws when that's just not true.

Quite easily the most amazing nature video I've ever seen. When it comes to people and their effect on wildelife, I guarantee you no one predicted this! The fact that this bird can make the sound of a chainsaw totally blows my mind. But what really bewilders me is how he is able to make the sound of a chainsaw AND a tree falling at the same time! I don't care how much money you'd offer me, or how much time you'd give me, but there is just no way I could accomplish the same feat that this bird has done. Just think about the difficulty of the task: from memory, recreate the sounds of a chsinsaw and tree being chopped down. Couldn't even come up with anything remotely resembling what this bird has managed to produce. He definitely deserves to find a mate!
