The days date is Feburary 21st 2022, Today we find ourselves venturing out to the town of Salamanca, NY, to chase Buffalo & Pittsburgh Train SIRI, which runs from Salamanca NY, to Riker, PA. We came out here to chase this train not knowing what the power was, and we were in for a treat. SD60M 3891 would be today’s leader, and although it does not have operating marker lights, was equipped with a wonderful Leslie RS3L. SD60Is 3883 and 3882 followed right behind. Newly painted GP38-2 3512, SD60M 3888, Triclops SD60M 3892, and Canadian build SD40-2 3342 would make up today’s consist.
While waiting for the crew to show up, we moved over to Great Valley, NY to check out B&P 203, the last remaining B&P High hood locomotive. Although still lettered for the Buffalo & Pittsburgh, this locomotive is actually owned and operated by Gernatt Asphalt Products. Unfortunately, they were not operating today.
Back to SIRI, we find the crew getting onboard 3891. Shortly after they would get the train underway. Our first shot was in Carrollton, NY. Carrollton is the location where the Baltimore & Ohio Mainline, now Buffalo & Pittsburgh, crosses over the Erie Railroad, now Western New York and Pennsylvania. 3891’s RS3L can be heard in the distance as SIRI quickly approaches our cameras. Due to a slow driver, we were a little bit late getting to our next location in Limestone, NY. Crossing the border into Pennsylvania, State route 219 parallels the line most of the way south making for an easy chase. At Bradford, PA; SIRI will stop and drop off cars at the American Refinery Inc. There was a specific shot I had in mind here, but we didn’t get around to it. Moving south to the Main Street Crossing, we catch them as they cross over both Main Street, and also the Tunungwant Creek. Quickly rushing to Lewis Run, Pennsylvania; Our next filming spot is right in the center of a Horseshoe curve. Although not the famous one in Altoona, this Horseshoe curve is just as spectacular. Older EMDs usually struggle up this intense grade but these big SD60s have no problem getting their load up and over. Our last spot on this eventful chase would be at Center Street in Mt. Jewett, Pennsylvania. Here there is a siding which still has some unique features. Remnants of the line's history can be seen in the form of trackside objects. The most notable, are the Baltimore & Ohio Color Position Light signals, still standing watch over this line. Here we see an approach signal guiding SIRI down the line into JB. Another artifact is the wooden sign on a nearby signal box. This sign is also from the B&O era of this line.
