As a new homeowner, your channel has been an absolute treasure trove of knowledge. I appreciate how thoroughly everything is explained without wasting any time. One very very minor thing- the address number at 1:08:55 is set in Neutraface (font by House Industries) and the 8 is upside down!
Please show projects that broke people can do. Can't rent a skid steer, don't have $1000's to do a large scale improvement. You have taught me so much over the year since my partner died, but please something kind of simple and cheaper. I loved your video on deck in a day, how to hang wallpaper. I have used your well thought out information several time. Thank you.
"...it's mostly an issue of your integrity. And, let's just be honest. In the world of construction, the guys that are getting paid to do nothing but labor, they're usually there because integrity is not the top skill that they have! Just saying." Jeff always dropping those truth bombs! 😂😂😂
Cheers Larry! I wish the same for you as well my friend! It was a little weird this year since we couldn't all get together but enjoyable none the less!
Hi Jeff. Wow. Your house and patio area looks amazing. Bet your neighbours are abit envy. Lol. Fantastic job! Your wife did a great job to. Are your sons in the same business as you to? Take care. All the best. 👍👌🇬🇧❤️
Wow, I've seen you do dozens of projects whether it's plumbing, electric, demolition, construction, etc. This might be the first video that intimidates me. For whatever reason, outdoor landscape leveling looks very time and labor expensive and too easy to mess up and make mistakes. Also, general question... what is GA? You mentioned that several times and I googled it and can't find out what it stands for.
I'm a subscriber, enjoy all your videos. I'm also a teacher. There are times I'd like to share parts of your projects/processes with my students. Unfortunately you're not a safety glasses guy... I require them in class and would never hear the end of it if I showed them a video where the "Pro" didn't wear them. Anyway come I love your stuff and will continue to watch and pick up tips that I can use and share. Thanks for the great content you put out. Keep it up!
I feel great. We limited the install of the stones to under 100 sq ft a day and my son and I took turns installing. definitely a back buster job if you are too aggressive. I also have a blow up hot tub for the evening to restore myself with.
I'm sure it makes sense to you, but cementing tiles to compacted stone dust doesn't seem to make much sense to me... If you didn't have the weight of these extra-thick tiles, wouldn't they be very susceptible to movement? (versus cementing them to some kind of more solid substrate like concrete)?
Had a similar question. They aren't bonded to anything so why the cement? Screeting off that big of an area in sand base after the compacted stone might've been a challenge I guess.
Im a surprised this method works and I'm sure it does otherwise Jeff wouldn't do it. I would think heaving and shifting especially in freeze thaw. Only foot traffic I'm sure.
Let me take the opportunity to wish you a happy new year, and thank you for doing a great service to homeowners. How a great teacher, skilled builder, all with a positive attitude. Thank you Jeff.
FYI...foundation prep is ESSENTIAL...I told my dad. DAD I need a compactor and these materials to get a paved walkway that will not move. 2 years later after he told me.. just use sand and a hand compactor and sand only...well. the walkway is failing and I am not gong to fix it ;) TOLD YOU SO POPS! LOVE YOUR SON :)
Thank you so much Jeff for the detail you put on this videos, they are very helpful. Just a comment on what you said on 27:12- 27:22 , with all respect, I don't think that is true, integrity is a quality that is not defined by your profession, you choose to be integral and skill you develop; you can have integrity and also be very skilled at your profession, whether you are a construction worker, a nurse, an engineer, etc. you can always choose to have integrity. I understand your message though, I have worked with contractors with integrity in their work and I also have work with some that lack of it unfortunately, same with homeowners.
OMG, when you told poor Michelle she was a lot stronger than she thinks, wow! My husband says that to me all the time when we renovate. (Newsflash! We aren't as strong as you think! LOL!)
I had to stop the video for a second. “I don’t have time for that kind of nuts”, greatest line EVER!. K, back to the as usual amazing informative video.
Have you got any idea how annoying it is to have a self-indulgent DWAD (dik with a drill) neighbour who decides to turn their property into a pseudo beer-garden/outdoor-cooking experience and in doing so destroys the tranquillity for EVERYONE else? You can't buy 'class'....
Why bother with mortar on crush substrate!? I don't understand. You'll get channels under your sand / crush that will cause movement and end up cracking in the grout. What kind of end of life are talking about here... five years? Are you flipping the property? This runs contrary to everything I know about physics. At least if the grout was epoxy... I'd have some faith that water penetration would be negligible. Maybe run a Kerdi membrane between pressure treated T & G 3/4 ply on top of the aggregate. I'm a fan of your channel... but this installation without explanation hurts me to my soul. Explain bonding mortar to substrate and why it might work.
You overdid it with the fabric. Most, if not all, the weeds will grow on the top inch or two of the surface. The weeds grow because, in time, dirt will find it's way into the space between the pavers. Also, the compacted gravel will keep weeds from growing. I would not recommend the fabric. It's a waste of money. Another thing. I've always liked your work, but let's be fair to others and keep the negative criticism about other people's work integrity to yourself.
Could you please do a video on attic remodeling, making one a livable space? Complete with in wall ventilation from the soffit to the ridge vent. Great channel. Keep it up.
How do I use granite setts? Portland cement to lay them into a crushed stone bed? And then for grout do a sand and cement slurry? Is this how it was done traditionally in Rome?
Ok, I live alone and am planning on installing a patio. I can rent a 1000lb compactor...but how do I transport it?? Even if my best friend wanted to help me the two of us wouldn't be able to lift it out of my truck
Too true, even the licenced trades you hire. Most of the time giving a shit and taking your time trumps experience and a piece of paper saying you're an expert. Just because they know how to do the job, or did when they got taught way back when does not mean they will do it properly especially if it's more expensive, or takes longer or if it's just friday arvo!
I love your videos and I think you do great work. But an honest question, the 8 in your house number... is that not upside down? I guess it works either way and it might be done that way for uniqueness. Or maybe I'm wrong :D
Absolutely love your channel and have learned so much from you! It’s unbelievable the volume of content you’ve been able to push out! Thanks for all the videos and inspiration 👍🏻
Would love a review on the "new" paver base panels that can be used instead of traditional gravel/sand base. I have seen a number of positive reviews by DIYers but don;t want to have to redo pavers in a few years. This is not a job you want to redo anytime soon
If you do this wrong it will be huge waste of money. This is advanced process for most home owners. Even the products are major learning curve. Do not start a large space if it is new to you.
I love how this is "DIY" but the entire start of the process is absolutely not DIY for me lmao...all that excavation I would absolutely have to contract out haha
Thank you Jeff for sharing your wisdoms & skills. I learned may skills from watching your channel. You teach the viewers how to do many projects the practical ways & it worked. Many thanks!!!!
Amazing job! Couldn’t image laying 35lbs tile all day! I’ve seen some similar before with flag stone on 6” concrete. It was a drive way and a year later they were popping loose. :/ they used some sort of adhesive the first time and the second a modified mortar. I would love to see a follow up video after a few years. Again, looks great! Thanks for all the videos!
I watched your other video yesterday where you built your three seasons extension. In that one you told us you had clouds of mosquitos in the summer and yet in the winter even with insulation and a heater it was too cold in the winter. Now today you regale us with more tales of the tribulations of your weather. Ok, I've got it. You have been hired by the Florida Chamber of Commerce to keep people coming south. You are a talented spokesman for "Keep out of Canada" movement. The climate possibly won't kill you but why take chances? Today it's January 8. It's 54 F here today in California. It will just get warmer for the rest of the year. No mosquitos, no cockroach's, no snakes, an occasional mountain lion but the grizzlies are all gone and the wolves. Why the hell do you live there?
Rome wasn't built in a day, and this video proves that integrity is why. Love all the work you do, even if it's not always my taste. I've learned so much from your videos. Merry Christmas a lil late, and Happy New Year!
Jeff I'm very curious. Is this your forever home, or are you flipping this one also? Been with you guys for 2 years now. You're adding an absurd amount of value to this home if you're flipping it.
So I saw this video while I was on the plane, downloaded it - RU-vid premium 👍, and got a bit of a freight as I too need to install porcelain pavers. I looked at the instructions from the manufacturer I don’t see them requiring concrete on the back of the tiles I can just lay it on the sand, thank God! I also see some other guys not compacting the sand?
It's not that much about holding, but leveling. In this case, gravel act like a Schluter uncoupling membrane. As long as it's compacted and well drained he should not have any problems. Pretty clever IMO.
My thought as well... slightly strange... i mean... if it is really compacted and solid, ok.. but it doesnt feel like it... "Breaks the rules of traditional tiling" :D
@@saulgoodman2018 You could be right about the thin set as I went to the tiles website and they did not use any thin set in their installation video. With that said the question Mangar raised was if it was strong enough to be installed just over the gravel and sand which according to the manufacture and this video it is and that is what I was commenting on.
@@saulgoodman2018 Not if you live in a Frost and Thaw zone. IF you don't just use stone dust. You did notice he didn't use water correct? Personally, I will never use this technique in either form. It is just way beyond a DIY-er's ability. Even his wife couldn't do it! This takes years and years of practice. Trial and error I do believe they call it. Many "Call Backs" to fix the problem. I had a few back in the '80's about Cracked Basements. I also had questions for the owners of the house....Why is your LAWN MUD? 6" of mud is excessive.....4FT? This is no longer my problem. YES, I hand dug down half the basement 4FT to find the crack! How clay does water hold? Very Well TYVM.
When digging a trench for gas or electric we put the forks together in the middle on our mt100 and use them to do the majority of the digging. The forks break up all the hard packed dirt and rocks so you just have to follow behind with a shovel and clean out the loose dirt in the trench
Also when tamping anything with fines in it, gravel, road base, limestone screenings, dust and chips you need to wet it down first, if you dry tamp the base is still loose after, not really locked together as one unit, tamping after wetting, everything locks together, it gets nearly as hard as concrete and you can not move any of the base, you need to use a pickaxe to dig any of it out a shovel just won’t do
It's because dimensional lumber and drywall, etc., is processed in imperial. This, using metric in construction is a pain in the ass. As he said, we trade a lot with the US and given that we used to be a wholly Imperial-based country; hence it being surveyed in mile quadrants; yet we go by km. Ugh For science related measurements, it's easier just to deal with metric, but I don't see us ever fully integrating metric. I will forever have to use a conversion calculator. 😆. I have no idea what I measure in cm but was always recorded as 5'8" - same goes for weight, even though I know how to convert from Kg - lb - stone. Sorry...that was likely a bit long winded, but that's just how I roll 😊
Hi Jeff I'm looking to do a Reno on my back garden. Please can you do a video of how to Reno your garden? Add new patio and artificial grass. Love your channel thanks
