@@johngibs5356nah they aren’t. Nomadic houses aren’t supposed to be complicated. They have to be as simple as possible because they move around a lot. That’s why nomads either live in tents, wagons (like caravans), or simple houses (like the Afar here) that can be taken apart & put back together easily. They aren’t starving, they’re just nomadic

A fascinating video! A couple years ago, I stayed in a modified tent like this in a small campground near Lac Abbe in Djibouti, near the Ethiopian border. The next day, we gave two Afar men a ride to their village (a temporary village, as they are semi-nomadic), and they invited us into their tent homes like these and introduced us to their families. Spending time with the Afar people was one of the highlights of all my travel in dozens of countries.

I have lived all year round in similar type of structure in England , made from hazel poles , covered in army canvas, lined with wool blankets between canvas and frame....wood boards and carpets on floor , and wood stove inside, for extreme winter temperatures.....this type of tent known as a Bender was widely used by Gypsy people in the past but not now.....I was still living in Benders till a few years ago, including December / January 2010 / 2011, which was the coldest December/ January for over 100 years....however , with the wood stove on and extra blankets on my bed I was warm and comfortable. ....I now live in the luxury of a small bus, on the north Devon coast. I had wondered about winds' effect on their houses. Their mats are reminiscent of Sahaptian and Salishan tule culture, their house frames are reminiscent of Algonquian longhouses and their use of rocks for anchoring their houses is reminiscent of perhaps Siouxan or other Plains peoples' historical use of the same for anchoring teepees. I haven't noticed but, I would imagine there to be a chimney (smoke hole) in the middle of the roof of each house. That would be largely identical to Algonquian architecture. "Great minds think alike".

the family is from Afar the Horn of Africa and the fact that you commented “these people are poor” at least they don’t feel stressed from taxes and laws. But I do find it fascinating that I can learn more of this part of my country 🇪🇹 where my parents come from

Poverty is, I think, mostly relative but sometimes it is absolute. Here I travelled as a guest of a NGO dealing with issues of poverty and indeed saw malnourishment and heard of high infant mortality. Compared with the tribes of southern Ethiopia, people here did not look so well fed, and there were tensions I felt with the central government extracting what they felt to be 'their' salt and taking the profit. Note this was 2 years ago and things may have changed.

@@NomadArchitecture Is there a reason this tribes suffer from malnutrition while owning large herds of livestock? I'm Kenyan myself and have always wondered about that with the pastoralist tribes in our country too.

I have unrolled my sleeping bag out in many places, desert, rain forest , high mountain and wet and windy moors. Living is more than just unrolling a sleeping bag and mat and getting a brew on. Could I live there? yes with a lot of help from the Afar people.
