Hi Andy Not a good idea to run it of an extension lead , especially if the lead is not fully unwound . As a retired electrical contractor I won’t go to technical on you , but basically on load a cable that is wound up will generate heat which can eventually ignite the cable. With a rating of 2400 watts that is definitely not to be disregarded . Only thinking of you and your family . Kind regards to your good self

I think i would trade that in for a wood burner Andy 😜

My self got the old paraffin heater cooker also it gives off plenty of light, so any power cuts I can heat up food, the kettle, also got heat and light and also bought a lot of paraffin in for over the winter just incase of power cuts. I will keep window open slightly and also use a carbon detector. Also I have a massive inverter generator in a shed I converted for it, also have a large jerry can full of petrol and plenty of candles and solar powered lights and head torches just incase for emergencies as its better to be safe than sorry.

It should be noted that infrared and radiant tube heaters heat things and people not spaces and as such for people they make you feel warm in a cold space. To get the benefit of any radiant heat you would need to be within direct sight and within the emitting distance. Most people don't understand the concept of radiant heating so expect that it needs to warm the space and set it to do that ending up with horrific electricity bills as a result. The heat loss from a space will be the same whether you heat with a radiant source heating the building fabric elements rather than the space heating and as electrical heating is 3x the cost of gas, expect bigger bills. The good news for Andy is that his garage will haemorrhage heat due to its construction and the gaps around the garage door so that if the heater is positioned to heat his body (only) he will be warmer than relying on a fan heater, say. Radiant tube heating is commonly spec'd in vehicle garages where the main doors are open most of the time to allow the passage of vehicles and yet there is a need to warm the human occupants. Interestingly, a general principle for heating is that for comfort conditions are achieved by 2/3rds air temperature and 1/3rd radiant temperature, which is why fully glazed buildings require higher air temperatures to compensate for the lower radiant temperature of the glazed walls

Thanks for sharing. Theres goung to be a multitude of little electric heaters coming out as the months pass by and tney all use electricity to run, there's no free electricity, no escaping thevlaws of physics. I hope the heater is useful. I would add some brush guard to your garage door to help limit cold air breezing through.

It's still an electric heater which means expensive to run no matter which way you cut it or dress it up. Turning electricity into heat is very expensive full stop.

Indeed, people often overlook electric showers which can pull up to a staggering 10.8 kW costing £3.24 an hour to run based on 30p/kWh that could easily be done with 4 people having a 15 min shower each a day.

Before I’ve even watched this …. It’s electric … It will be expensive! … Is your garage well insulated? But I’m guessing that if you’re going to use your background like you’ve mentioned, then are rooms inside the house going to be the best place during winter🤔

I don't trust anything that's says smart or has an app for it, bit like smart meters
@danisaac
@danisaac 9 месяцев назад
It can still be used manually, it’s just another electric heater nothing really new apart from the smart controls (optional) could get something much cheaper to do the same though with just an on off switch.

Andy what is the electricity consumption like using it?
@matthewreed3963
@matthewreed3963 9 месяцев назад
yes this heater might work as a heater but it doesn't mean that you save money you are still gonna use the same amount of electricity is a use and littletiny air heater it's all to do with physics
@macraghnaill3553

As it's 2400 watts with 4 power settings it will be expensive to run even on the lowest setting of 600 watts. That 1 bar uses the same amount of power as my 3 bar electric /convector heater fire which has a thermostat control [ I only use the electric fire until the stove gets lit]

It runs on electricity. I can't afford that full stop.
@ralphwilmot6351
@ralphwilmot6351 9 месяцев назад
On the highest setting of 2400 watts. It would be almost as expensive as running a 3Kw kettle. In your garage with no ceiling and large uninsulated door, it’s going to be on most of the time. You will need a mortgage to pay the electric bill.

On max, run for a while it will likely melt a coiled extension lead beware⚠️ best plugged right into a socket or if you have to use an extension lead use a straight one as short as possible for you needs rated at the full 13Amps (electrician talking) 😃👍

Hate it. Way to complex for something you would hope would last decades. The mega complicated control system will fail very fast. No need for a bar heater to have any more than an on/off switch. A bi metal strip thermostat maybe as that can be bypassed if borked. Keep it simple.

Athena uses between 1200 and 2400 watts so no that economical. Extension lead should be fully unwound. Regarding installation by an electrician the item is supplied with a standard plug and play with a standard household three pin plug so should be OK for self installation.

Both of those, mounting brackets are off level, especially the lower one?? If I can see it how come he can't or maybe he doesn't want to see it😂.

Unfortunately no info on cost of use of electricity
@andyg1645
@andyg1645 9 месяцев назад
An appliance with a 13A plug does not require a qualified electrician to install it, the vast majority of people will fit the brackets themselves but saying that it requires an electrician to install it sounds like the company trying to give itself an easy way out if anything goes wrong with the heater. The first question the company will ask in the event of anything going wrong is, did a qualified electrician install it? When you say no, they will say tough luck, you haven’t followed the manufacturer’s instructions so the warranty is null and void. As an Electrician with 45 years experience I have never been asked to install anything with a 13A plug.

What's the wattage? No mention that infrared heaters only heat objects and not the air! Point it at a black chair and it will heat up, which is the only way the air will heat up. Garage already at 24 centigrade? That's already very warm! Turn all the heating off and only turn on the infrared, first thing in the morning when the temperature is very low, like this morning and then see how quickly it warms up! A 400 watt unit doesn't make much difference! Check out reviews on YT and you'll find you need real high power units to make a real difference! Sorry I've been doing my research on these lately and I'm not impressed!

No chance i'm getting one as it looks like rebranded chinese shit and it'll cost a lot to run over the coming winter with electric prices the way they are.

All electric heaters are virtually 100% efficient but of course electric is more expensive but they can be good for ‘targeted’ heating eg. one person/one room. Gas boilers are cheaper to heat with hands down if heating a whole house.
