In this video I will demonstrate how to create amazing model tree trunks for model railroad scenery. I am creating a mountain pine forest with twisted wire or bottle brush trees. The foreground trees need trunks that look realistic, so in this video I show you how I create and paint those realistic model tree trunks. I am a Boomer fan, but I've been using fiber paste longer that I knew of Boomer. Just because two people use the same product doesn't mean one stole it from the other.

Nice trees baby!!! Lol I go outside and get real wood tree "trunks" works good everytime. I use the filter element with green flocking and hairspray.

There is NOT enough trunks and dead trees either standing up or lying on the ground on most layouts that I have seen on YT! Does anyone agree?

100% agree. Unless you're in an urban forested park area or a tree farm, real untended forests are littered with lots and lots of downed logs and stumps, and of course leave litter and, depending on the health of the forest, varying degrees of understory brush/brambles. In my layout's forested areas, I have nearly a 1:1 ratio of standing "live" trees to deadfall, at least where the forest floor would naturally be visible. I also throw in a scattering of dead but standing trees. I don't have a photo to show, but I think it looks a lot more realistic.

I just came back from a trip across the center of America returning from Tennessee. I saw a great deal of totally barren and quite possibly dead trees among the vibrant trees around them. I liked the dichotomy.

Two quick things about fiber paste. Scoop some onto a palate and keep the lid on the jar as it can setup and dry fast. Also you can thin it with water, so the first coat can go down almost like a think paint.

@@RonsTrainsNThings It isn't my idea, Boomer Diorama said it. He uses a lot of Golden products and swears by them. He also makes the most amazing HO scale trees I have ever seen.

A good substitute for Fiber paste, is making your own. I Model in HO gauge, but I’m sure a minor substitution will work for N gauge. I just take simple Elmer’s Glue, and mix it 3 parts Glue to One part fine grained Sand. (For N gauge, substituting the sand for a fine grain like Baking powder or Soda should work just as well.) this looks great on both Conifers and deciduous trees. Another trick for pines Barks with more of that ”Wood chip” type, (if you’re a Smoker like myself) is sprinkling the tobacco flakes, left in the bottoms of packs, onto the glue once it becomes more tacky then wet, then rolling the trunk with a BBQ skewer, to set it semi-flush. After a paint coat, and a black or dark brown wash, and a dry brushing of Grey, it’ll really pop nicely. 👍🏼

One way to add bulk to the tree trunk is during winding the wire by placing paper like the branch material between the wire and let it wrap around it as it turns. Another is to use paper with adhesive on it or even masking tape on the stem to wrap around the wires and then paint the texture on it to seal it as well. This technique is faster since the wrapping material basically encased the wire in many layers adding bulk at the same time instead and about all that's left is painting which can be textures as it goes on...

hi ron !!! first, let me say a special "thank you" for all the great videos/topics you give us modelers !!! they are extremely helpful.... as a retired rx i am doing a lot of work on my pike and just placed a nice order to micro mark for more paperwork/bill boxes/etc... question, ron, do i need bill boxes for my yards ? i am a bit confused as david popp in "how to operate your model rr" summer 2012 says on page 27 i will need "1 compartment for each industry."... tony koester, in his 2nd edition of "realistic model rr operation" says, also coincidentally on his page 27, in the upper right hand corner " putting each waybill in a bill box labeled for that track"....the micro mark insert i got with my initial order years ago says " large yards or towns may require more than one bill box to keep your cards organized properly"... so i see the words "industry" by popp, "track" by koester, and "large yard or towns" by micro mark !!! i feel kind of bad about this, as my drugstore was started by our great, great granddad way back in 1883 and i have been responsible for every aspect of running a old fashioned drug store ( no chain stores for us !!!) all my life, from shampoos/ toothpaste all the way up to controlled substances on a pill by pill basis, not to mention everything else that was on my plate !!! as i have come to just love the way you present each topic, i realize that you have a very well defined method to all your modeling ideas and realize everyone does things a bit differently in our hobby. please help as i have watched your teaching videos and am still a bit confused !! blessings to you, ron !!! you are in my evening prayers tonight !!! denny armes springville,ny

Dear Ron, great vid, very interesting method. Am an absolute fan of the Golden fibre paste and as a matter of fact, any other Golden products. One remark, humbly think the application of the first layers of fibre paste is much easier when the tree isn’t planted in the foam. Plus, a first layer of Gesso will improve the bite on the twisted wire, before applying the paste. Love the way this method creates truly random tree footings. Cheerio

I looked at your video entry about custom coloring wood stains with water based colors and distilled water and a water flow aid. I've ordered the Liquitex products, but it seems somewhat counter intuitive to me. Why would your water based answer as is be better than say a water based clear finish such a Behr's satin clear water based interior fast drying polyurethane ? Is this a fume related issue or economy based decision ? Love your channel. You have been a great help for many of us, including myself, in helping us railroad modelers out there to bypass a tedious learning curve and achieve awesome results.

I bought a brass n scale steam locomotive with a wire that as far as I can tell was soldered from the trailing truck to the motor chassis frame (solder marks directly above and below each other; one on the bottom of the chassis, the other directly below it on top of the trailing truck aperture). The locomotive draws current but the lights don’t work and the loco doesn’t move. Im out of town so can’t make repairs now but given the problems the loco has, does that in your experience sound like something that can be fixed by just soldering the wire back into the training truck on one end then to the chassis on the other?

There is a much easier way for conifers: take a 3 mm plastic tube from Evergreen, score it lengthwise with a medium hack blade, and paint with gray, adding dry brushed brown and black highlights. Fast, easy, and remarkably real, the wire trunks go smoothly inside. Plus, no messy fiber paste with long drying times.
