Waymond's version of masculinity is so important. He's strong, but in a way that isn't often valued. He affects people and can change the choices of those around him but he doesn't do it with violence.
I don't get how today's society think about masculinity as very dominant and brutish. AS much as I know about traditional masculinity, it's about being authoritative while also compassionate and caring, able to lift others up.
I noticed waymond's strengths from the very beginning of the movie, and I know his actions were placed in the directing intentionally to show how Evelyn missed and resented so much of his natural gifts throughout their relationship. But when she starts to really see him later in the movie, man, I cried so hard. I just loved how much this movie was about mending relationships, even when it looked too bad to fix. God, this was so good.
Michelle Yeoh is a master of fighting choreographies and does her own stunts. There is an interview where Yeoh says that "Jackie Chan used to believe women don't belong in martial arts movies, until I kicked his butt." She's metal.
That one fight in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon she did is some of the best martial arts put to film. She deserves to be mentioned alongside the all time greats of martial arts
Michele Yeoh is a Hong Kong legend, she was in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, in Crazy Rich Asians, Shang Chi and she did a bunch of voice-over work for Disney and Dreamworks. She's incredible. The dad actually played Short Round and Data (in Indiana Jones and the Goonies, resprectively). This was his first movie in decades, and he killed it.
You should check out her Honk Kong action films from the 80s like "Yes Madame", "Royal Warriors". She starred with Jackie Chan in 'Supercop 3" and is an amazing action star on her own way before she came to Hollywood. These films are amazing. Seek them out, you won't be disappointed.
The "big nose" insult Evelyn threw in is SO accurate lmaooo. Asians, especially asian moms in particular say the most out of pocket shit unprompted. We used to have a small filipino restaurant back in LA when we first migrated and she looked at one of our loyal customers once and said "damn, this girl's been here 5 days in a row, no wonder she's big!" in tagalog and I'm like wtf mom
I love how Waymond never had a character arc. Instead, the audience did. We all changed our opinion about him towards the end. Kindness isn’t a weakness. It’s strategic and calculated and we all have it in ourselves. It’s our greatest strength.
The movie basically is an assault on the viewers senses who The Daniels pulled from everything that has influenced them as filmmakers and crammed as much of it into the film that would make sense. The Matrix, The One, The Raid. Fight Club. Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love. The Mask. Nacho Libre. Ratatouille. Monty Python. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Being John Malkovich. The Goonies. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Clan of the White Lotus. The Fifth Element. Blade Runner. Big Trouble in Little China. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sense 8. Perfect Blue. Rick and Morty. Paprika. Pulp Fiction. I love how the end discussion turned into an exploration into existentialism and busting nuts. "Whole different seed bro".
Cast notes: - Michelle Yeoh (Evelyn), who you've seen in _Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,_ was a famous HK action star during the same Jackie Chan / Jet Li kung fu film heyday and still does her own action choreo; she's in fact good friends with Jackie and co-stars in one of his most famous movies, _Police Cop 3 : Supercop,_ and she also was in _Tai Chi Master_ with Jet Li. Before that she was a beauty queen, Miss Malaysia 1983. - Jamie Lee Curtis (Deirdre the auditor) doesn't need any introduction. She's said in interviews that she signed on to the movie specifically so she could work with Michelle Yeoh, and that's actually her doing the flying knee (wirework action apparently was on her bucket list). - Ke Huy Quan (Waymond) is the same child actor who played Short Round in _Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_ and Data in _The Goonies._ His more recent work is behind the camera; he was a stunt coordinator for the 2000 _X-Men_ movie. But he got back into acting after seeing _Crazy Rich Asians_ (which stars Michelle Yeoh too) and thinking there might be parts for Asian-Americans again. - Stephanie Hsu (Joy) comes from the Broadway stage; she was part of the original cast of _The SpongeBob Musical_ and the lead for the _Be More Chill_ musical. She also has a recurring part in _The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel_ TV show, and she had a bit part as Katy's disbelieving friend in _Shang Chi._ - James Hong (Gong Gong) you should've seen or heard somewhere, whether it's _Kung Fu Panda_ or _Blade Runner._ He's 93 now and holds the record for most roles played for an actor at over 600 credits over 68 years in the biz. - Harry Shum Jr. (Chad the Raccacoonie chef) is mainly known for being one of the glee club gang in _Glee._ - Raccacoonie itself was a voice cameo by Randy Newman of Pixar soundtrack fame (e.g. "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story), so that's a movie riff hidden inside another movie riff. - Jenny Slate (Debbie the Dog Mom) was a cast member on SNL and had roles in _Parks and Rec_ and _House of Lies._ She's also a regular voice actor for animation; she's Tammy in _Bob's Burgers,_ Dawn Bellweather the assistant mayor in _Zootopia,_ and Harley Quinn in the _The Lego Batman Movie._
I really enjoy watching people enjoy this movie. Born in '51, I've been paying fairly close attention to movies for 60+ years and in production and concept this is the most astonishing work of film art I've seen. It's been quite a while since I read them but this feels like the illustrated version of "Be Here Now" or "The Only Dance There Is"
Loved your reactions guys..you were so quick to get a lot of the philosophical messages and subtext from this movie without time to process. So on point!!
I love your enthusiasm in your reaction and dialogues after the movie had ended. You guys realized that this movie is not just silly and fun, but there is a profound meaning behind all the "silliness". It's about self acceptance in order to repair the damaged relationships with your loved ones (ie. husband, daughter, father, co-worker, friend, and etc). All those "what ifs" will only do you harm and cause you not enjoy the current moment--enjoy the small specks of time you have on this earth. Our existence is so "small" in relation to the universe. We are all small and "stupid".
You are both so frigging CUTE I cannot handle it!!! I loved your reaction. I didn't understand the movie the first time either, most people don't, but when you see it a 2nd and 3rd..... time you'll realize why they do what they do and see/hear things you missed the first view. I saw it 13 times (on a pirated stream) then bought it cuz the more I watch it the more I realize why it should be the best movie of the year.
Growing up watching her film and having crush on her and one day found out that she actually a Malaysian and born in my hometown here... I'm upset that I found it out so late and Ke huy Quan done amazing job as the husband
I think the reason why they say nothing matters is because the only way nothing matters is if EVERYTHING matters. Everything and Nothing are both absolutes, which can be represented by zero - which is also the shape of a bagel. The bagel is a symbol that represents the absoluteness of the universe.
The actor who plays Waymond, Key Huy Wang was a famous child actor who played Data in The Goonies and Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. As he got older he quit acting because there was so little opportunities for Asian actors at the time, so he went behind the scenes and that’s what he did for the last 20+ years until he saw his co-star in this film, Michelle Yeoh act in Crazy Rich Asians. He was inspired to return to acting and this is his first film back in decades and first major film role since The Goonies

@@YaBoyRockLee there are only 2 small spoilers in the trailer that are barely noticeable, they will not affect the subsequent viewing of the anime (I write in Russian, translating in a translator, there may be problems with reverse translation).
The reason some scenes raymond doesn’t have the earpiece in but, still swaps places with alpha raymond is because alpha raymond is linking to him from the alpha verse with his headpiece on. In the beginning when he fights the security in the irs building he has the earpieces on because he uses them to learn new abilities while in raymonds body but, doesn’t need them to link to alpha raymond. Awsome reactions guys i was dying 😂
@@MikeS-ur2ql They seem to be able to summon and change the properties of objects in other universes, essentially bringing things from the universes they're jumping to and from. Like an extremely limited version of what Jobu Tupaki (and later, Evelyn) can do. The earpieces, the app on the phone, the wheelchair, the gun, the inexplicably durable dog, all of the other weapons they have near the end, etc.
The Matrix was directed by the Wachowski sisters, they were credited as the Wachowski brothers in the original matrix but because they were not out as transgender yet.
Great post-analysis guys! I went through the same revelation as you both and Evelyn - my initial opinion of Waymond was that he was sweet but too silly and I was a bit irritated because I understood her stress and initially I was more attracted to the "Alpha" and "CEO" versions of him. But then I changed my mind/feelings for him by the end. You should watch the video essay on Everyone Everywhere Needs Waymond on toxic masculinity - amazing. And you guys had some very astute observations - agreed with almost all of them! And YES - hot dog universe was a romantic relationship!
Don't usually comment but I'm just 4 mins in and really taken by your positive outlook on things. Ironic as it pertains to comments on the Internet or segments thereof. I wish you guys success.
i'm sure ya got the answers somewhere, but just in case.... the wachowski brothers did the matrix. No, jobu tobacky's goal was not to kill evelyn in all those universes. she was trying to find one that could experience everything, everywhere, all at once like her without dying, to be understood... feel what she was feeling. she touched the previous evelyns and put them through the universes, and they wound up dying. she wanted to end the pointlessness without being alone.
Just finished watching #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce Absolutely Stunning!! Incredible Acting and a really deep powerful story. 😱🤯😭 Michelle Yeoh gives us the performance of a life time. 10/10
@26:10 - Guys got to complicated with it. Just read what he is saying. He did the divorce paperwork to shock her and force her to engage about their marriage. He doesn't want it but he can't get her to talk to him or work on their marriage. It worked for their friends so he is trying it on her. He loves her but she has grown distant and he is doing whatever he can go get her back. As for the Bagel, it isn't enlightenment, it is death, is the physical manifestation of Jobu's nihilism and suicide if the daughter goes in it. Whereas the Googly eyes, the inverse colors of the bagel, represents joy and love.
i think the idea is whatever you do in life that is ordinary is like you are pursuing what you are destined to be but, by diverging of your destined path you create a tear in reality because its so absurd and “unrealistic”. That’s why he ate chapstick, the paper cuts, etc. once you go off your destined route and create a tear in reality, or nexus event (loki reference), you then use the headpiece to direct yourself through the multi-verse to your desired universe by linking your mind to theirs.
I'm like a year late. Don't have time to filter through the rest of the comments. But in case no else mentioned this, the actor who plays Waymond, was a fight coordinator for Jackie Chan. So not only did he help coreograph these fights, he also performed most of his own stunts. Man is a legend and deserved the Oscar he got
If you've watch the Daniels Music Video and some of their short films that they have done years back. You won't be surprised by their absurb random ideas in their work. Their last full length movie they have done before this multiverse masterpiece was Swiss Army Man. Go check it out.
I'm so so so shocked by some ugly comments????? People saying that they are not intelligent or good reviewers for not understanding the movie??? FIRST guys come on, not everyone understands that movie the first time, it's supposed to be crazy, (beautifully) confusing, and it's totally okay! That's a good and honest reaction, we don't mind explaining what parts the reactors didn't understand, that is why we are a community. SECONDLY, the movie received a lot of theories, lot of different explanations, AND understanding something while some didn't... DOES _NOT_ MAKE YOU SMART. So don't nag people about who is intelligent or stupid here. Finally, it's normal to laugh at some part of the movie! I laughed a lot at ridiculous parts, and I was moved to. If you don't like the reviewers, go somewhere else. Don't stay. No one force you to watch the video. Be frustrated somewhere else 🙄 Okay that's me venting about the comments. I just finished the movie and it was nice watching again with you 😌 The actress... My god she's a goddess, a legend in Asian movies, she was in Shang Chi with Tony Lee ✨
@@YaBoyRockLee Always here to defend you guys! People think they can say everything they want without consequences, this is so annoying... anyways this is an amazing channel 💯😊
@@YaBoyRockLee So glad Nana made the above comment. I was just about to comment something similar, but Nana articulated it so much better than I could have. I LOVED your reaction and enthusiasm, and I LOVED your discussion afterwards. I watched EEAAO 12 times in the theater, I’ve streamed it at least 15 or 20 times at home, and I’ve watched at least a couple dozen reaction videos. Yours is one of my favorite reactions to this absolutely sensational film - the best movie I’ve ever seen in my 48 years on this earth. (It was The Wizard of Oz since I was a preschooler, and EEAAO managed to dethrone it! 😮) Edit to add that I’ve liked and subscribed.
I was 97 when this movie came out. I still remember watching this with my grandson in an old theater. After the movie finished, we came out of a theater that was brand new. I felt younger, my grandson was my dad and my mother became my cousin.
I really like you guys’ reaction. You are really trying to understand the movie. That’s probably the biggest reason that I think this movie is phenomenal! It’s showing some aspects of Asians, especially the immigrants in US.
Best movie I've seen in the past 5 years AT LEAST. And that's saying something considering how high I rated the new Batman movie. This was on a whole 'nother level.
Interesting that director mention about how the choreography seem like Jackie chan because Jackie is actually supposed to be the MC instead of Michelle yeoh but I gotta say that I feel she perfect for this movie
the russos have nothing to do with this film other than throwing some money to help get it off the ground, the Daniels, the actors, and the crew are what made it special. Dont get it twisted. The daniels literally turned down making an marvel movie to make this because with this, they were free to do whatever they wanted creatively without constrained, with marvel theyd need to get the permission of a whole ass disney board room meeting with suits who would approve or disapprove every little detail. this is this anti marvel movie. its got humor, sure, but it doednt depend on po culture winks or cameos to get people hyped, its got action but the action here is raw, and choreographed by actual martial artists. and its got cgi, but ws only developed by 5 people on a small budget, it doesnt have disneys multi million dollar budget, and yet this shit still fucking destroys the entire mcus phase 4. the acting is god tier, if non of the actors in thid film doesnt atleast get a nomination for an oscer, there is something wrong with the world.... and lastly, the story is unique, its got actual stakes, a heart. Its not just another souless cash grab following the same tired formula a group of executives in disney pumped off an assembly line to appease as much of the general population as possible to max out profits, its ART.
As a dumb American who can barely speak any language other than English (a little Spanish and Japanese is all I can do), it impresses me that the family in this is trilingual. English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. The latter two are written the same but pronounced very differently as I understand it. So the daughter knew the Mandarin, but was horrible with Cantonese. Everyone loves Alpha/Racoon Waymond and disses on regular Waymond. Until regular Waymond gives his speech. THEN everyone, everywhere, all at once falls in love with regular Waymond. One thing I missed until like the millionth reaction video of this I watched is "even this cookie can be kung fu." And what does regular Waymond make for Dierdre? The same cookies. It s his kung fu.
actually Michelle Yeoh and a few of the alpha people did their own stunts and created their own choreography! Andy Le and Brian Le are two famous self-taught stuntmen on youtube (I think they’re called Martial Club) and they were the two guys who fought Evelyn with the butt plugs 😭 (pretty sure they were also in Shang Chi!)
I’m not sad. And Happiness is an emotion. I felt so much excitement watching this film. I dunno what’s up with people wanting others to be down or be sad. I’m generally a happy person. I laugh at my own pain much less a film
@@YaBoyRockLee That's great and all but it's kinda disrespectful to the people involved with this film to be laughing during a scene where Michelle Yeoh is pouring her heart out but ok.
@@Melkac I enjoyed her movie. I was happy with her product. If you’d like an unnatural reaction. I can force emotions i dont feel. Or stop the video until I’m done being happy. Like I’m not being rude, I record my natural reaction with my friend Director and we experienced Joy and a great time. I don’t do fake sadness for views. As brilliant as an actress as she was. I didn’t feel feel sad. I felt joy. She’s doing amazing work and I’m with my friend.
This is why it’s better for people to react to this movie alone. People reacting together are too focused on cracking jokes and being “entertaining and funny” and aren’t pulled into the movie well enough. When one person does, the other starts blurting out something and takes them out of it. I tried to enjoy but oh well, personal taste I guess. I still like you guys though
