I lived in Zagreb, Croatia before coming to USA as a Bosnian refugee and I would agree with you, it is a beautiful country.

@@australiaprisonisland9156 Oh, many things happened. Beautiful nature, spectacular and colorful history, kind people, inventions, art, cuisine... but algorithms and rotten people won't let it float. This is why people come to know one of most beautiful and historically significant gems just because of Game of thrones. Yes, Croatian Adriatic is pretty but behind every rock there is a legend, story, myth. There are door mice recipes, well documented vampires, cursed islands, fair maidens built in castle walls as a form of punishment, cursed springs of Black queen, inspiration for Jules Verne's Matias Sandorf (Journey to the Center of the Earth), first printed non-Latin scripts, sunk villages, undeciphered graves without bodies, ancient Roman recipes that would make your stomach curl, unknown XIth century music, roosters shot from canons, thousands of years old olives and unexplored grape sorts... just to scratch the surface.

Why do you associate the word 'Balkan' with offence? The Balkans are a magnificent part of Europe and so are it's people. Of course when there are no disputes.

@@australiaprisonisland9156 thank you for your question. I personally don’t connect the term “Balkan” or “Balkans” with ofense. The intention of my commet was to draw the attenton of the authors i.e. also of everyone else talking, thinking or commenting on the region, to mind, consider and respect the indigenous peoples of that region. Meaning, to try not to impose blanket terms, coined for political and other conveniences of people(s) who don’t live in the region, on everything and everyone in the region, mindlesly. But to instead try to understand, or at least try to take into consideration the actual real views of the indigenous peoples about themselves, their homeland and their general understandig of themselves. Imposing blanket terms over people for conveniences of one (eledgedly) uninvolved party (i.e. english speaking audience), especialy when the power relations are, to use Croatia only as an example, less than 4 million indigenous people vs 1.36 billion speakers of the language which uses a specific term to clasify them, in our case english speakers using the term “Balkans” for a region which doesn’t consider itself part of the implications of that term in exactly the same way in which in the indigenous peoples of the geographic region today called USA never saw themselves as “Indian”, is in all its practical effect a form of colonialism. I wrote my coment in a firm believe and convincion that the authors of this video nither intended to take a supremacist stance, nor were even aware of the sublime colonilast stance inherent in their use of the word “Balkan” in their video. They have simply repeated what has over past 3 dacades became convenient in exactly the same way how words “Indian” or “negro” have centuries ago became convenient in the same language. Understang this may also explain why some indigenous peoples still today may be offended when it is spoken about them in terms which they would never use to describe themselves. Here I especially think about for example the inhabitans of the croatian islands, or the kajkavian societies in the north of the country, to only name the two most obvious ones.

Why does your surname carry a balkan suffix? Will you change it to reflect your perspective. You don't speak German like they do in Central Europe.

I would proclaim that those countries you mention are in eastern Europe except maybe perhaps the Czech republic. Anyway Europa was the Mediterranean basin historically. No it's moved north.

Yet it has a Balkan mentality. A distrust toward it's neighbours.

Yet linguistically it is much like the other languages...........in the Balkans.
