Re: The Beastie Boys -- it IS Zeppelin. They sampled it from When the Levee Breaks. In fact, if you listen to a lot of hip-hop and rap music, then start listening to classic rock, you'll recognize a lot of iconic sounds that have been sampled.
My Grand daughter and I listen to my music from late 60s to mid 70s. I love that she appreciates it. She plays first chair trumpet, bass guitar and keyboard. She is in all search/honors classes and maintains an A/B average. She has won many art contest. She's pretty amazing.
The harmonica is Robert Plant. This is a blues tune written in 1929 about the worst flood in US history. The Mississippi River flood of 1927. After the flood, 200,000 African Americans moved to northern cities to find work.
@K1NG D1AMOND - «one of the most sampled beats in hip hop history» Source ? There are a LOT of pretenders to being "most sampled"... James Brown's tunes have the actual record... «Those same tracks were later resurrected by countless hip-hop musicians from the 1970s onward. As a result, James Brown remains to this day the world's most sampled recording artist.» en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brown#1967%E2%80%931970:_Soul_Brother_No._1
@djremy - Nope key subject is "and one of the most sampled beats in hip hop history". Which NEVER imply observation of the first part of the sentence, as the qualification here is "most sampled beats in hip hop history"... It's about hip hop beat samples. I guess that you don't (/didn't) score high in mathematics if you make those kind of correlations in statements.
British bands that were influenced by black American blues like howlin wolf, Robert Johnson, they brought the blues back to America in the 60’s and 70’s, think Rolling Stones, the who, led zep with there own version. Their music is still relevant today, the older I get the more I listen to music from that era.
When The Levee Breaks is a reworking of a song originally recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929 about a flood that devastated the Mississippi Delta in 1927. That drum sequence is one of the most sampled in early hip hop. The guitar you're hearing is played by Jimmy Page. Jimmy created Led Zeppelin, played all the guitars, produced all their albums and kept as much creative control behind the scenes as possible so the band wouldn't get taken advantage of. The drum sound was achieved by placing mics around the room, including hanging above the drum kit. By recording the ambient sound of the music bouncing around the room, gives it a rich, full sound (distance equals depth, a trick Jimmy discovered during his session playing days). Robert plays a harmonica that had a backwards echo effect added to it and his voice has a phasing treatment on it. Jimmy is using a slide on the guitar to make it squeak and shriek. The instruments are all slowed down a bit in the recording which helps give it that sludgy, back-water blues sound. Consequently, this was never played live because Zep only played stuff they could modify to be able to play on stage (you have to keep in mind this was the '70's and the type of stage effects that we take for granted today didn't exist then). What I recommend to all new listeners is to start at the beginning and go in order album by album and track by track to hear their musical maturity. There isn't tons of live footage (comparatively speaking). There's a half hour concert from Denmark in 1969, a concert from Royal Albert Hall in 1970, their concert movie called The Song Remains The Same filmed in Madison Square Garden in 1973, film from Earls Court in 1975, I think, and Knebworth in 1979, I think. All of it is on RU-vid. They were known for long improvisation when playing live so if you want an EPIC (in my opinion) experience, watch Dazed And Confused from their concert movie The Song Remains The Same. It's about a half hour long but WORTH IT!
Everyone in the band were true musicians of their own accord. Jimmy was the backbone yes, but all were the best in the business. Take it from a fellow musician, I know. Born in '57, played, wrote, and lived music for all my 63 years.
Love when the younger generation listens to the music I knew as a younster and grew up on. Zepplin really knows how to Rock you into a good mood and always love when Robert breaks out the harmonica ...
This song got me through last winter. Worst winter of my life. I played this every day on an acoustic guitar with a harmonica braced on my neck. I'm telling you man, it was therapy! Respect to Memphis Minnie.
This song showcases Bonzo on drums very well, not to mention that killer harmonica and Jimmy on slide! Old people's music???? It's music like this that keeps us young, at least in our minds
When I was a teenager in the 90s I listened to music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, all before my era. It seems to me young people today don't have the same appreciation for the old school
When the British took the American Blues they saved rock and roll. Beatles, Rolling Stones Led Zeppelin just to name 3. still inspiring 50 years and counting
If you're liking the combination of blues and rock, then Zep is going to give you a great ride. They're the masters of such. They created a unique sound out of the unique sounds of the old blues players. Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf - Zep took their songs and created their own original style around them. This one here is by Memphis Minnie, from 1929. The first two Zep albums are the most blues-heavy ones, so that's where you'll find most of their blues. Happy journey! :)
I may be in my 30s, but my dad brought me up right on classic rock, so it's my favorite genre. Zepp is my favorite band of all time. So glad to see more people enjoying their masterpieces. ✌💜 Zepp had influences from blues, folk, gospel, funk, orchestral, and Eastern music (among others) so you'll always find variety in their tunes.
Its ok young lady just listen too stuff that makes you wanna move about.im old as dirt been playing bass guitar almost 40 years any ways enjoy the old music along with the new................. Peace sister
This is one of those songs that transcends the medium and speaks directly to the human experience. That grinding pulse repetitious and pushing like the driving flood just hitting the levee again and again, then Robert Planet enters the frame talking about tragedy and loss in the face of an inexorable force, a man in the throes of loss, sitting on the levee all night thinking about what he can't keep or restore.
What's really cool is how this song captures the haunting, gripping, fear and emotion people must have felt when the great flood of 1929 happened. It's like Zep looked at the old photos and felt what the people of the time must have felt. As if they felt compelled to study what the original artist was trying to convey and stick to it but express it in their own way. Maybe that's partly why they are who they are, the greatest band of all time.
Zeppelin never disappoints! And live...they are the masters! The Song Remains The Same/The Rain Song...Achillies Last Stand live...Since I've Been Loving You live...Stairway To Heaven live!
Old peoples music. 😆. Thkx for getting in the groove. If you want to listen to the music you got to go in the past no truer words. Appreciate your effort
Old People’s music? Dude we are the generation that brought you all the good stuff. From Motown to the British Invasion, and the American Rock/blues like Grand Funk etc.
One of their biggest hits and another of my favorites. Glad you are getting this timeless rock music from the greatest rock band ever, in my humble opinion.
Excellent! So excited for you to discover these guys. There are tons of Zeppelin tunes I'd recommend, Since I've Been Loving You, Dazed & Confused, The Lemon Song, The Ocean, Black Dog, Kashmir (not the live version though), In My Time of Dying, etc.etc.etc. and on and on!
This is the most sampled beat there is. Everybody used it in the 80's-90's. Hip Hop & Dance music. You'll start hearing this everywhere. Enigma's Return To Innocence is another well known song with this beat.
@@michaelpatterson9119 I agree that there were some plagiarism issues involving LZ (w/other bands stealing their stuff too), but they didn't "steal" old blues tunes, they used bits in their songs b/c they are blues based and to pay homage.
I love zeppelin, I have all of their original albums on vinyl records, took ages to find any with no scratches but I managed to find them and play them regularly, they are the prides of my collection
Zeppelin were an incredibly versatile band - try these to give you an overall flavour of the breadth and depth of their incredible music: Good Times Bad Times, How many more times, Heartbreaker, Thankyou, Since I've been loving you, Bron Y Aur Stomp, Celebration Day, Misty Mountain Hop, Over the Hills and Far Away, Dancing Days, Achilles Last Stand, In My Time of Dying, Kashmir, Down By The Seaside, Nobody's Fault But Mine, In The Evening, Carouselambra. That should keep you entertained for a while!
I applaud you for dipping into the LZ catalog and experiencing the greatness of all four members who seem to have no limits on writing and producing so many incredible songs! Please pay attention to how many different guitar sounds/tones Jimmy Page employs in every song. The guitar(s) NEVER sound the same. Genius!
Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite band. One thing about Led Zeppelin is that most of their albums really don't have bad song on them. They really don't have filler throw away song. So my suggestion would be start at the beginning. You have to be careful about reacting to Zeppelin they will block your video. If you pause the video during and talk about it some, I think you will be ok. Oh you mention your wife, if you react to "Since I've Been Loving You" and Babe I'm Going to Leave You" you got to let her listen to that. Robert's voice is piercing it gives me the chills everytime. I hope my suggestion helps.
"One thing about Led Zeppelin is that most of their albums really don't have bad song on them. They really don't have filler throw away song. So my suggestion would be start at the beginning." SO TRUE ! For me, probably the ONLY band that reaches this height!
This song was a remake of a 1931 blues song about the 1929 Mississippi river flood. Robert Plant is on harmonica. The Beastie boys did sample this, that intro to the Beastie boys song was actually Led Zeppelin.
Fun fact from an old school music nerd. That epic echo on the drums is real. No effects were used. The drums were placed in the foyer of a european mansion that the band rented to record their album. They experimented (Jimmy page experimented) with all sorts of mic placements. Down the hallways, in the chandelier, outside the front door, outside a window, etc. Then experimented with the mix to get the EPIC reverb on the drums. NO DIGITAL EFFECTS, NOT EVEN ANALOG EFFECTS. And yes the Beastie Boys (rick Rubin, Def Jam Records) sampled the drum beat from the beginning of the song back when you could get away with that sort of heavy sampling without paying up. I hate to say it, but pay attention. The name of the song you are remembering is called "RHYMING AND STEALING"!!!!
@@Codex7777 it's not my favorite but it's a top 5 which is high honor with that band. What shocks me is I never hear anyone talking about it. Though I must admit I was foolishly not a physical graffitti fan so I just got into it until recently and man that album might be there overall best album.
Nothin makes me smile more picturing black guys all over the USA bobbin their heads while this is Blasting on their car stereos! Now you are truly "Woke" when it comes to Rock music brother. Welcome to the awesomeness that is Led Zeppelin, otherwise known as the Greatest Rock Band of All Time with NO EQUAL!
Saw Zepplin twice. Stairway to Heaven is probably their most famous song. It is definitely a Classic Rock staple. There is a interview video with Jimmy Page (the guitarist) about how they arranged and recorded the song. It is most interesting. By the way part of the melody and lyrics to stairway way borrowed from a musical from the early 60s. It was the Pied Piper of Hamlin. Van Johnson was the piper. It was about an old English folk tale.
If i remember rightly, when they recorded this in 1970, Bonzo played the drums in the lobby of Headley Grange, which was a hostel in days gone by. They hung microphones on the staircase to try and get that feel that they eventually got from Bonzo.
Yes this goes back to blues song from Chicago, Great song just listened to them do this live, one thing I can say is that I grew up in high school with them They are the ultimate band ever!! Music today does Not compare, so the resurgence is here for them #1 Ever
Rhymin and stealin in a drunken state and I’ll be rockin my rhymes all the way to hell’s gate... ;) It reminds you of the Beasties because the Beasties sampled it.
Hey man, I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and I have several Zeppelin records on vinyl. You still have to react to their best song : Achilles Last stand. Trust me man, I'm a musician. This song is gonna blow you out of the water
They only performed this a couple times live. It was too difficult to reproduce the drum echo and such that they produced in the studio. Plant and Page did a live version after Zeppelin broke up that’s cool though.
as a bass player for seveal decades John paul jones taught me alot about bass and drummer needs to set the scene and let the others paint away Peace my friend
Bro Led Zeppelin is My Favorite Band's I've Been Listening To Since The 70s When They Where On Top My Dad Plays There Albums All Time lol Hey When You. Have Time Check Out Their 1976 Movie Called The Song Remains The Same Killer Ass Movie!😎👍
Can't just listen to a few Zeppelin songs. Once you start, have to listen to them all. Down a long wonderful rabbit hole and definitely listen to all the live performances that you can.
if u like blues & slide guitar, "traveling riverside blues" is a masterpiece, as is this 1. it's a tribute to robert johnson, so you'll hear a sprinkling of some of his verses, but it's zep's own original music.
Enjoying watching your journey through the greatest rock and roll band in history! It's fun to watch you discover the greatness of real innovation and creativity on the highest level.
"This was a highly requested song and it did not disappoint."...Nothing they ever did disappointed that is why they are the greatest rock band of all time...Signed, an old people...
Just for the record for all of you new LZ "reactors".. Zeppelin has always been and will always be about the master.. JIMMY PAGE....his guitar playing and sound... No disrespect to the other members of the band who are as good at what they do as Jimmy is playing the guitar most of us agree....but, it is what it is...and no Zeppelin fan would seriously argue with that statement....
That's something that I'm coming to find. Every member had specific strengths but page really brought something special to this band. More songs I listen to the intrigued I become.
The Adventures of TNT ...Guitarist Jimmy Page was already famous from being in the Yardbirds with Jeff Beck. He was also one of the most well known studio guitarists in England. He FORMED Zeppelin. It was his idea, his brainchild and his baby. He was also the oldest musician in the band. Not to mention he wrote most of their songs and PRODUCED every album they made. He was the Governor, The President, the founding member, the creator, the LEADER of the band.
nicknamed BONZO , the drummer was positioned at the very Bottom of a stairwell to achieve this ingenious, exotic percussion sound ! LED ZEPPELIN dangled a microphone from above and this Unmatched sound was Created
@@TheAdventuresofTNT yes , I read it in a quote from John Bonham himself . Listen When the Levee Breaks , in the dark , with headphones on & imagine the drumkit in the bowels of a staircase 😃 AWESOME
This is real blues. It is full of pain. It’s about the great Mississippi River flood of 1927. They dynamited the levees to save Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Flooded and destroyed the rural south. Killed hundreds of people and caused the breakup of thousands of black families as the men had to leave for large northern cities to find work. This song was written in the late 1920s. Zeppelin reworked it and made it their own. The drums had a big influence on Hip Hop.
Where do you go? You've just entered the Led Zeppelin "rabbit hole" bro, the deeper you go, the more treasures and surprises you will find. Doesn't matter which album it is or song, you will discover something new virtually every time.
You want more of that Zeppelin southern American blues??? 'In my time of dying'. It is their remake of the old 'Blind' Willie Johnson tune. Raw as hell.
Love your stuff. Totally respect you for completely digging what Zeppelin was all about. Next song, The Ocean. You are just going to freaking love this.
For a live performance check out the movie soundtrack from the “the song remains the same”; specifically “since I’ve been loving you” and “stairway to heaven”.
