A vlog about my #Red #Abyssinian #Banana Plant, #musa #ventricosum #ensete #maurelii. I explain some of the basics of caring for the red banana plant including feeding, positioning and overwintering. You will see these in the borders at Longmeadow in the Gardener's World program with Monty Don. But even Monty has to dig his up each year.
This particular type of banana plant is not hardy. In the UK it needs to be brought inside, in to a cool not too light place for winter where it should be allowed to dry out to avoid rot, which will put into a kind of dormancy. It cannot cope with any frost at all.
The enormous red leaves are amazing and structural although they can easily be damaged in strong winds. It needs plenty of food and water, we use tomato food and pelleted chicken manure plant food.
