This toy is based off of a toy called Sin that was designed by Peer Clahsen. It's really quite simple to make and the illusion can be stunning. I added another set of 2 to see what type of effect I could get and I was surprised how cool it turned out. I sprayed the 4 version with UV paint and then used black lights. In the sideways sequence at the end, the illusion is spoiled a bit because you can see the glue. If you use use less glue, the effect would be better.

There's already a ton of this illusion *every*where. There's one in Calgary, Alberta right outside of the old Science Center. Well, there *was* until it got demolished and replaced by the Telus Science Center.

Make extremely large ones. Lay them vertically and make them spin, then stand in the centre to look like you have a protective forcefield around you.

I love the way the rings create this optical illusion so much. It's so hard to u see even if you follow the joints. You know, that it's just rolling on that anchor point but can't help see it as them spin on their free edges

I've done something like this before, but I'd recommend using a glossy silver paint. The reflection of light adds to the illusion of spinning rings.

*cough if you use a perfectly circular torus for this, because you are using them at a slight tilt, will become a slightly squished ellipse when viewed from the side. that is why it can be observed that the object rolls in certain periods and frequencies from 0:52 to 1:00. to target this, I recommend using an ellipse-shaped torus extended towards the points where it is connected with the other ones.

You can get these rings in nearly any store that sells craft supplies. They are commonly used in floral arrangements to make wreaths.

you forgot to sand the burrs off the styrofoam, which would have completed the illusion. This way you see the little seam where the ring was moulded.

If they're just styrofoam, you could use pins to join them instead of messy sanding and gluing....Just shove a couple of toothpicks or whatever halfway into one and then stick the next one on etc etc...
