@@Hazehellivo agreed. His forging technique made me cringe. Most of his blows were crooked and he didn’t do anything to correct. As others mentioned, he worked the steel way too much while cold. Going to have micro fractures from here to hell. He didn’t harden the steel, you can tell by the color of the sparks while he was grinding it. Not to mention that any gardening would be destroyed by the overheating said grinding was doing. Entertaining? Ok, sure. Proper technique? Craftsmanship? I think not. Any smith worth their salt would trash that blade before someone tried using it and seriously hurt themselves.

@@doubaya2959 Maybe a good knife SHOULD cost that much. People are way too accustomed and addicted to cheap Chinese goods, which look very good at first, then break and need to be discarded very soon. I'm currently looking at a kitchen knife from Japan that costs over $100. It's from a reputable company that has been in business for over 100 years, made with highest grade Japanese steel (some of the best in the world). A knife like that is a lifetime investment. That's a knife that you put away when you leave town, so that nothing "happens" to it. You sir already got a drill machine. Now you only need some metal piercings bits, a band saw against that hand saw and you got a sharpener too so you’d also need an angle grinder for rubbing both wood n metal. These aren’t much expensive either, you’ll make 10 of those blades in the same time if you get the right equipment. Nicely done btw 👌🏻

@@deandeann1541 Oh, a belt you say? There must be a water mill or some such to drive such a contrivance, definitely not electricity. And the blower runs on natural draft? Yeah, obviously a skilled craftsmen working with very rudimentary material and tools. Yet still, heat treating is essential for good blade smithing.
@christiandietz6341
@christiandietz6341 3 года назад
You talk about quenching? This smith has bern around the block more than few times. I'm sure he knows everytuing about it. Ball bearings are made of very tough and durable high carbon " cemented" steel. Quenching it might make the knife fery brittle and it might also crack in the process. This guy knows what he is doing with his relatively rudimental set of tools.

Absolutely right
@bigtrout
@bigtrout 3 года назад
@@christiandietz6341 Heat treating makes a knife, or not. Never implied he didn't know what he was doing, in fact, complimented his skills considering the tools he has to work with. Having said that, a very basic explanation of heat treating: After forging, a steel has to be normalized to remove the work hardening. Then heated again and quenched (in a proper medium) to make it very hard, and yes, it is brittle at that point. THEN it is tempered to soften it to the desired hardness. Proper heat treating produces a blade that isn't too hard and easily breakable, nor too soft and easily bendable. That's what heat treating does. I ASSUME he just left those steps off the video. If he didn't do those steps, then his blade is little more than junk, regardless what type steel he used. Yes, I know just a little about knife making.
