Witness the eerily beautiful growth of larvae into bees in this mesmerizing time-lapse video from photographer Anand Varma. Varma said the six-month project, for which he built a beehive in his workshop, gave him a new respect for the meticulous job of beekeeping.

For those wondering, the varroa mites seen in the video are parasites that suck the hemolymph (Essentially blood) of the bees. This weakens the bee directly and also may lead to the transfer of viruses, which could significantly damage a bee colony.

This parasite comes from south east Asia. Bees of this area can deal with it and kick their asses any day. Sadly, human activities imported those mites in Europe, North America, you name it...where bees never had to deal with this parasite. So they don't know what to do and if the infestation is big enough, it will eventually destroy the whole hive. It's a big, big problem. Some say it's the top reason of the disappearance of the bees along with pesticides. A worldwide problem. Beekeepers, bee's best friends, have their ways of dealing with varroa destructor ( the name of this god damn mite ). I think we should all be beekeepers if we have the chance. I know I will :)

A couple of years ago I found what looked like a very tired bee in my back garden. I picked him up with the use of a small stick but he wouldn't fly off. So I decided to give him some honey on a spoon. Looking at the bees in this video reminded me of that day, because near the end, you can see their tongues out, licking the sides of their 'birth channels'. I watched as the bee licked the honey from the spoon. He then flew off.

Surely I'm not the only person wondering this, but how come all but three finished transmorphism? Did those three die in the process?

I think they were just laid later than the others. If you look early on in the video, you can see that their larvae look a lot smaller than the ones around them. So it's possible the others just got a head start and in a day or so they'll finish transforming, too.

the mites suck the bees dry. they are just like flees they feed off them. I really hate those buggers if you don't control the situation it can kill a whole bee hive off.

All they want to do is repopulate but basically they are sucking the blood from the bees and they do cause an infestation causing diseases to the bees so yeah that's pretty bad for them....

Use Manley syrup to kill them off. I don't know the proportions, but you dissolve thymol in really pure grain alcohol, then mix a little of that into sugar and hot water to make a thin syrup for the bees to eat in the winter.

***** Yeah Wasps are annoying. I've pet bumblebees before without getting them agitated, and I've held female (stinging) bees in my hands too, without getting stung. Wasps, you don't even have to look at them and they will go after you xD
