You may have seen the news about the discovery of a contemporary carving of Anne Boleyn's falcon badge and how Paul Fitzsimmons, an antiques dealer, bought it for £75 and how it's now worth £200,000. It's a wonderful find and the good news is that Paul isn't keeping it to himself, it's going on loan to Hampton Court Palace. Thank you, Paul, and thank you to Tracy Borman, Joint Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces.
In this video, historian Claire Ridgway interviews Sandra Vasoli and James Peacock, who both played key roles in the story of this carving. It is a fascinating story.
Paul's website is www.marhamchurchantiques.com/ and a big thank you to him for allowing us to use his photos of Anne Boleyn's falcon badge before and after its restoration. Photo credit: Paul Fitzsimmons, Marhamchurch Antiques
You can find out more about the symbolism of Anne Boleyn's badge and the other parts of her heraldry in Claire's article at www.theanneboleynfiles.com/an...
Sandi is the author of two novels about Anne Boleyn - Struck with the Dart of Love and Truth Endures - and a non-fiction book Anne Boleyn's Letter from the Tower. Her website is sandravasoli.com/
James works at Hampton Court Palace and also runs the popular Queen Anne Boleyn Society on social media - / anneboleynsociety , / anneboleynsoc and / anneboleynsociety

Anne's ultimate triumph after her death was that one day her daughter Elizabeth would become the greatest Queen ever of England. Hopefully Henry would know this from the great beyond that his daughter eclipsed him and was a tremendously much better monarch than he ever was.

I love Anne Boylen because her story is the story of so many of us but on a grander scale. Those of us who were love bombed until we finally gave in, then enjoyed a seemingly idyllic perfect phase found it almost impossible to comprehend the stark contrast in our partner when his or her crazy began to show. By the time she realised this love to beat all loves would not save her it was too late. Unlike Anne, our narcissistic partners don’t usually have the power to behead us but we can still relate. The idea that her legacy has been so preserved is quite empowering actually and feels victorious to me.

My theory: one of the workmen who was tasked with getting rid of all the Anne paraphernalia kept it, didn't destroy it, put it away, and through the centuries, the story behind it was lost to time.

Beeswax was a very large component of furniture polish. Often it was combined with lemon oil to make it spreadable. The slightly soft and sticky quality of this wax makes it an ideal medium for an unintended adhesive.

I've listened to this with much interest three times! I became interested in Anne Boleyn a couple of years ago. I plan to return to England to visit The Tower of London, and Hampton court. She actually prevailed in her death over Henry, who obviously was a sociopath, viewing women as only service providers, throwing them away when they no longer served him. Sad for Anne, who in my opinion was completely innocent and I truly believe Henry knew that as well.
@Jan-ss9tm
@Jan-ss9tm 2 года назад
Henry was probably a sociopath indeed, and I also believe she was innocent of everything thrown at her trial, but she was an operator, breaking the marriage of Henry up was a highly political act with dynastic and religious implications. People have died for less.

I think whoever removed it from Anne’s room probably took it home and covered it up in wax first to preserve it, then the paint so no one would notice the gilt and silver and start asking questions. Then they set it on a mantle where it got covered in soot, and from there it’s anyone’s guess. I'm so excited to see you weigh in on this. As soon as I saw the news report that a carved wooden bird from the Tudor era had been found I immediately thought of Queen Anne's badge! Don't we wish that we knew its mysteries? Did it get smuggled out by some workman as a souvenir? Or did one of Anne's supporters make sure that it landed in their possession to keep a tangible piece of Anne alive? She was a force of progress in her time and her brief three years as queen have had an impact that's echoed for hundreds of years. There's no erasing that.

I actually think your copy you had done of Anne which has subtle differences than its original, is more closely resembling what she probably actually looked like, as your painting actually has subtle differences while showing more human features. How lucky you found such a good painter. The new paint on yours shows what is lost to style of the time and time itself. Big win for you x

Don't know of course, but think somebody used it as a keepsake to mourn Anne. There was no funeral, so the person used it after dark, taking it out to create a sense of contact with the deceased so that s/he could pray for her soul. The ash would have been an expression of grief, as in 'sac-cloth and ashes' ... and it would have disguised the falcon so that probing eyes would pass it by.

Jane must have worried at times if her fate might not follow Anne's if she was unable to give the king everything he wanted, including a son. From one historian I read that just days after his marriage to Jane some beautiful new ladies came to court, and the king mused out loud in Jane's hearing that he wished he had seen these ladies before his new marriage.....

Fascinating. I guess Anne is looking on, making sure this piece is looked after and more of her history is discovered. I'd not be at all surprised if not only her portrait but other more fragile items are lurking somewhere, even in Palaces, just waiting for the right person to come along and look twice at something most people wouldn't even look once at. I believe she was totally innocent of the charges laid against her - all of them and by association, those men accused with her are likewise innocent. Contrary to many opinions, I actually think that Jane Boleyn was also innocent of 'telling tales out of school' so as to speak. If she truly did have evidence of such behaviour by Anne, her, Jane's, own husband and the other men and had not said something when she first knew or even suspected, her own head might have been lost well before it actually was. (Makes me wonder if things might have been very different for Catherine Howard if Jane Boleyn had already been dead). Jane might have been a lot of things, but I don't think she was a silly woman. She knew exactly how Henry would have reacted if she had gone running to tell tales, true or otherwise. Very often, the messenger ended up in exactly the same situation as the perpetrator. Her later involvement with Catherine Howard was stupid, she kept secret and Henry made her pay the same price as Catherine. That she wasn't accused of having previous knowledge of suspicions about Anne et al strikes me as significant.
@nancycampbell8671
@nancycampbell8671 2 года назад
I agree. I started with the typical prejudices against the Jane. However the more that I learn about her the more I realize how mischaracterized she's been. Her ending was a tragic. I agree that there's more stuff to be found. Some in a vault, attic or garage sale! I might be incorrect, but wasn't beeswax used as a type of furniture polish that also preserved fine wood?

I went to Hampton Court in 2015 and my mind was blown away. We were led to the Kings Chapel and it was pointed out that somebody missed one of Anne's Falcon badges. We were not permitted to take photos as the chapel was getting ready for a service. I could not believe it. Also on the fan vault ceiling of the Anne Boleyn Gate there are the carved 'H A' bosses (hope thats spelt correctly!!). Elizabeth never forgot her mother. she even had a locket ring commisioned. The 'B' necklace was given to Elizabeth and the portrait of her in her red dress she has a brooch with pearls, those are the pearls from Anne's necklace and one of them, correct me if I'm wrong, is part of the current coronation crowm. The badge is beautiful and I'm so pleased it is back home at Hampton Court. Anne Boleyn exhibition, try and borrow the Boleyn Cup. I would love an Anne Boleyn exhibition and I would save every penny to go to it!!!!

In anthropology we study resistance, and it occurs in very overt and covert ways and physical and mental ones… the fact it was not destroyed and it was an item that was so clearly and obviously a sign relating to her means likely means it was a form of resistance. Since it was kept on show and not tucked away, means that it demonstrated a positive mindset and possibly pride revolving around it. Maybe someone bought it from a carpenter there and when Elizabeth came to power, they moved it to the front of their hearth or cabinet and it stayed in a place of prominence until it became old enough worth saving on those merits… I love the idea of this type of video, would love to see more discussions of important artifacts and items from the Tudor era, or even the palace itself. This is amazing. Could it have been painted black for mourning after her death? Like some kind of memento mori, or whatever it was called?

This is an amazing find. Definitely Anne Boleyn helps with finding her artefacts. Also Anne Boleyn is in the news again, in the new Spencer film with Kristin Stewart. Anne Boleyn's life is compared to Princess Diana. I visited Hampton Court in 2019. Fabulous place and steeped in history. Su.xx

This is indeed beyond exciting! When I first saw the news I wondered if you would address it - so, thank you. Nearly 500 years - magnificent. I’m going to go out on a limb here and ask if there were any Howard or Boleyn relatives still at court at the time? If so, perhaps they took the precaution of removing the badge. I wonder, too, if the badge had been part of a deliberate arrangement with beeswax candles, which would explain the layer of beeswax - those were expensive tapers, I believe and not usually the everyday lighting. (That’s just my impression…). I wonder, too, what Tracy Borman thought when approached about the artifact, since she wrote a biography of Thomas Cromwell, one of the chief architects of Anne’s downfall. (Apologies if I mucked up information- I’m a little better with the Elizabethan period details. ) THANKS Claire 🙏🏻. Thank you, also, to Sandy and James for their wonderful insights.

What is the provenance? Surely, the man who found it asked about where it's been for the last 500 odd years

I would think the beeswax was a polish, and soot would naturally stick to it if it wasn’t being regularly cleaned. I agree with you about having a piece of history, I have a sixpence with Queen Elizabeth I on it.

I am wondering if this could have been a sample made for the royal couple? If it were made by one of the artisans as a visual help , it might have been a stand-alone item (not attached, either). And if this is the case, the artisan (or a valued employee) would have kept the piece after the representation and (I assume) go ahead. They might have painted it over - instead of destroying it - because it had monetary value. Just enough of a camouflage to make keeping it feasible. Or kept it because they were proud of their workmanship. Or kept it because they were loyal to Anne. I really, really need a time-machine (equipped with a universal translator). Thank you all so much!
