I didn't even know peripheral existed until this video never saw anything for it, not even on the new on Amazon Prime page. If you're audience doesn't even know it exists how are they going to watch. They dropped the ball in more ways than one on this.

I wonder how the low end workers for Amazon feel, who are working for minimum wage, when they see Amazon throw tens of millions at no talent entertainment workers? The menial workers for Amazon help make Amazon profitable, yet get nothing for it, but grief, like getting sacked for taking a few seconds too long on a toilet break. Some of the Amazon workers take bottles to work with them to urinate in, so they don't risk getting sacked for taking too long at the loo.

I think the company you're talking about is distinctly different from Amazon Studios. It's a very bad look for a woman in charge of the studios to be making decisions based on her emotions - While deliberately ignoring focus groups that told her the truth, which she did not want to hear. As a woman, I feel this is worse than cringe. It's feeding into a (some might say THE) negative stereotype men have held against women and the advancement of women's rights since the mid-1800s. Why don't the Hollywood decision making people understand that they can try to lecture as much as they want in their "entertainment" offerings, but nobody's watching them except perhaps a tiny niche audience, so what's the point? I guess it makes their smug conscience happy ("I've done MY part in telling the deplorables what to think") and helps them to feel "seen" by the people whose approval they desire - and that is certainly worth hundreds of millions of dollars, right, Amazon? 🤔

Wheel of Time has some of the best fantasy source material the literary genre has to offer. The show runners decided they wanted the name, "Wheel of Time", but they wanted to have theie own woke story which has nothing to do with the books at all. They produced a train wreck, but they'd already been greenlit for 3 seasons before the first episode aired. Most fans of the books bailed after the very first episode. If they'd have followed the books, it would have been a hit. It seems Amazon studios just likes setting money on fire. No way has any increase in prime subs from these shows covered the costs. Just no way.

Just because the show features people that are different than you, doesn't mean there is an agenda. It just might be a story that involves people who might be different than you. No different than a TV show with all straight white people doesn't necessarily have an agenda against people that have different than you. Peripheral was very good. It was thought provoking but wasn't pushy. The fear I had was that it would become a Westworld with 20 seasons rather than doing 1-2 or 3 seasons max but closing it like Dark. Where it tied up neatly. One of the biggest mistakes of American networks in plural, make shows that are 1-2 seasons and that is it. So they have less of a risk of cancelling them.

The birth of Rand, was the jumping the shark moment for me. I don't know how anyone could have thought the show could be taken seriously after that. But in all fairness, I am listening to the Audio Books now and I can say Wheel of time doesn't really get interesting until book four. So there had to be some liberties taken. At least the TV show lead to having Rosalind Pike (Moraine's Actress) read the series for new Audio Books

Very true. They had a surefire hit and blew it. The showrunner even came out and said he was going to remake it and that fans of the books would probably not like the changes. The books had such a huge following that they often made it through the entire first season, hoping the series would eventually return to the original plot and show some of their favorite scenes, but the show kept disappointing them until the end, when it became clear it was irredeemable. They're not going to be fooled again.

That was why I winced when I found it in a startrek novel. As many have said, if writers want people to sympathise with characters from a given minority, just write good characters from that minority, and most people will like them, because news flash, most people are not! actually racist/sexist/homophobic. most people do however hate bad writing, and when "diversity", is always associated with bad writing, people are going to start hating that too. Things been banned because of a few bad eggs, shows pulled because of a single complaint letter. even our elections in the Commonwealth produce minority governments where a major party may get less votes than the other, but if enough independent parties give them their seats, they win.

But I think its unfair to put The Periphal in the same corner as Rings of Power; The Periphal had just a different concept. Like kinda Mr Robot. A Niche Series. One of those why I've actually Amazon Prime because I want once in a while some niche Stuff. I am not interessted in FRIENDS in another Format, another How I met your Mother Spinoff or a CSI Miami only on Moon this time. Rings of Power was just simply bad. Like the Witcher Series. It was really bad. No question. But The Periphal wasn't bad. It wasn't the "greatest series of all time!" - Maybe it wasn't even something like Mr Robot; but it wasn't uninteressting, uninspiried and simple boring.

I just got back to watching it and finished the 1st season 2 days ago. I really enjoyed it and I am gutted it won't be renewed. If they had put more money into promoting it more than RoP, it might have actually become a popular series. The Game of Thrones show is utter shite compared to the books. Cercei is a m0r0n in the books who just wants power but have 0 knowledge how to keep it while everything falls apart around her while in show she is a mastermind supervillain. The show completely ignores the little details what are hinted in the books which makes it the most interesting like the Lannisters started the whole war because they had no choice as their gold mines became depleted and they are technically broke.

Not a huge Wheel fan, but I read the first two books and can confirm it was written 1000 times better than GoT, which looked like it was written at a 6th grade reading level.

Can't agree more. Amazon absolutely butchered the story. Way too ambitious to produce both LoTR and WoT simultaneously. Even still I think Amazon couldn't help themselves by injecting cultural ideologies into the story which destroys its integrity. WoT felt so half-assed, top to bottom. Casting was atrocious besides Thom Merrillin (+1) and maybe Rand, in a different setting? If there was a more progressive gender identity goal to push a narrative by Amazon then it absolutely was not needed. JUST TELL THE STORY!!! There are so many badass women characters in the story that don't require a "reimagining" to make it current to our times. So F'ing frustrating b/c now we will likely never see a reboot or proper telling of the epic story, which IMO is up in the ranks of Tolkien (certainly R.J wouldn't have been there without J.R.R though)

Same as my lady and I. I am a fan, my lady is a huge uber super fan! including having her own great serpent ring (made long before the series). We watched the hole thing, but we were actively dreading each new episode, just seeing which ways Jordan's writing would be sacrificed on the altar of agenda next! At this point I sincerely hope both Rings of power, and the wheel of time tv series get cancelled and fail so hard that any future adaptation has to promise to stay true to the books.

The Peripheral deserved a second season to finish it out. I thought season 2 was a given, but apparently not. When started watching I thought the production was movie quality. .... I digress , They should have stopped Breaking Bad after season 4. It was tightly wrapped up and finished and season 5 was a money grab and after watching season 5, I went from really liking Jessy and Walter to hating both of them.

I have to disagree because all they're doing is releasing the same product but slapping different names and IPs on it to make easy money from established audiences. Most of the gay people I have meet aren't like those on these programs. They are more focused in their businesses and hobbies than yelling their private preferences each five minutes

When a character's defining aspect is what kind of reproductive organs they want to grind against, it makes for some rather limited characters. I have no problem with Hetero / Male / Female / LGBT / etc characters. As long as they are 'people' first instead of that being their core definition.

I wish Amazon gave me a directing job, creating entertainment for the masses. I for one wouldnt fuck it up and insult literally 80% of their viewers. And theres many more like me who would actually want to do good for the sake of the industry and not pandering to fake information and unrealistic societies. Sad really.

Prime video is probably run different from Amazon from AWS etc... Andy Jassy sounds like an out of touch bean counter to me and he was originally the CEO of AWS before taking over Amazon. Things will probably get a lot stricter under him than they were before he took over. Expect even less sympathy from him.

That was the original plan, only it's failing miserably. Hollywood as an entity thought it had enough money in its warchest to condition the world into accepting a new world order. They knew there would be resistence, but they continued because they figured that people need entertainment. And if they just push it long enough, we're gonna give up and just go to the theaters and swallow anything to alleviate the boredom. But the fact is that Hollywood studios are running out of money one by one, and this will continue until they go bankrupt and sell to Disney. Disney is soon going to own every single major studio.

Exactly. It's got nothing to do with them being female, though it's not entirely odd they all are, but if a true female fan was in charge, things would be so different.

@@RoseBaggins The problem is FINDING one of those "true female fans". Oh, they definitely exist... but they are also seriously outnumbered. Even then, most of them would probably find it difficult NOT to interject more "chick flick" type activity into the story... like talking about their feelings in hallways... etc. For things like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, etc., the ratio appears to be something like 5:1... and HIGHER, in terms of male to female ratio of fans. THEN... Characters can't really be any smarter than the writers... Male geniuses outnumber female geniuses about 7:1. Now, you don't really need a genius to run a sitcom... or a rom-com... because they don't take much imagination, but when you have to "develop" some alternative world (as in fantasy), magic system, super-advanced science and technology (Sci-Fi)... it darned sure helps to have someone smart enough to do that... Very similar things apply to spy thrillers, and some other genres.

They need incentive to make what they work on successful and care what the audience wants. Otherwise we've seen what happens if the "fuck you, got mine" mindset is rewarded and allowed to grow.

@@weird-guy They need to either get rid of residuals, or figure out how to implement residuals on streaming platforms, which they don't seem to know how to do, yet. For example, you've got hundreds of people involved in making one movie or show. A person might watch 100 shows in a month of streaming subscription. Let's say that they pay 10$/month for the streaming service. Let's say that 1/2 of that subscription goes to the streaming company, and 1/2 goes to the people who make the shows... That would be 5$ per person... split among 100 shows... (5 cents per show) further split among the hundreds of people who made the shows. IMO, a thornier problem is... Why do those people deserve residuals in the first place? If THEY do... then EVERYONE does... or no one does. What about paying residuals to the farmer who grew the food you ate for breakfast 20 years ago? (and every other meal).

That already happened with GoT. I still wonder if the TV show's last series was too close to the planned book ending, forcing a major re-write. Or whether that one will go the way of WoT and the author dies before it's finished. Martin's made a ton of money already, so doesn't seem in any rush.

Wow. That's "A Song of Ice and Fire" in a nutshell. Martin started writing something that, in the end, finally eclipsed his talent to conclude. I truly believe that Season 8 of HBO's "Game of Thrones" was what George had envisioned for his finale; but when he saw the reaction he panicked, put down his pen, and decided to ride off into the sunset on a squealing pig, bare-assed naked, hooting and hollering, hoping everyone would be so aghast at the sight that they'd be glad he never finished the damn thing. Ego's a helluva drug. 🤷‍♂️

With ongoing progress in AI we might be able to auto-generate and produce final seasons of these cancelled shows in the future.

I loved the concept, seemed original, can’t think of anything that resembles the plot. I really don’t know where all those millions went though even considering the VFX.

@@treytilley333 I suspect the lead isn't cheap these days. Though yes, lots of unnecessary VFX and a lot of stunts and trashed vehicles. Having the story be transatlantic probably didn't help either. But no doubt also lots of just plain waste too.

I liked it and wanted to see season 2. Though I didn't realize it cost so much. But that is probably because Amazon is bad at negotiation not because it had to cost that.

When it makes sense to have diversity, it should definitely be added. But as a viewer and consumer of entertainment, most of the time, it adds zero to the story and it doesn't make any sense at all. This whole check mark ideology is killing modern media slowly.

I don't know that's it's hated- it was actually at #1 on Amazon when it was on, and has gotten mostly good audience reviews. It's just that it was too expensive to justify.

I liked it, but I thought they could've adapted Gibson's book in one season - maybe even 5 episodes. Instead, it was dragged out. I still thought it was well-done. I would have much preferred to see Rings of Power canceled

I really enjoyed the first few episodes, but the last 2-3 where all setup for future seasons. They felt really off compared to of good the first episodes where.

You pretend to pay me? I'll pretend to work. What about just axing some thing that belongs on the cutting room floor and then taking out the trash. If a program or movie is devoid of merit, cut it! Otherwise, perhaps Prime isn't such a cash cow for creating your own properties.

Around 2019 the industry run into the „streaming bubble“, where everybody was convinced that winning the streaming wars would mean being the most successful media company in the world. So lots of companies started to increase their output beyond what the capacity has been. This created an issue with finding good people and drove the industry to insane deals. Nobody cared if this was sustainable as the pot full of gold was just waiting behind that rainbow. So yeah, the industry went into very stupid deals that make no sense, completely driven by fear of missing out (FOMO). Obviously somebody was clever enough to get paid for nothing just on the off chance he has a good idea while sitting on the pot and somebody smarter managed to establish this as a new model for keeping talent close. They all must have had a good laugh, while Jennifer Salke still got paid millions thanks to Amazon’s other businesses. Bottom line: nobody cared about common sense as they were promised to get rich just on the word „streaming“.

If the writing was good people would be praising it. It was an expensive vanity project that nobody really vibes with. Even Ready Player One with it's mediocrity had more interest.

I can think of numerous quality projects that were not renewed (I told my wife, “it’s too intelligent for a renewal”). Will - fab story of young Shakespeare, Three Pines (based on the book), New. Amsterdam (2008) an immortal finding love, 1899, Firefly, Awake (!), My So Called Life, journeyman, Jericho…. All these were praised, all had quality writing and passionate fans and they were cancelled

@@smb123211 I watched it. That's why it's my opinion and it's a vanity project because it was only green lit because of Sulke wanting social credit. It says so in the article itself. The show was expensive, didn't turn a profit and who is talking about it other than it being canceled? Nobody.

@@smb123211 Here's some extra food for thought, how many passion projects only loosely base their project on the source material? How many change up characters, swap them or fundamentally alter them? How many passion projects bloat their budget so much and yet have nothing to show for it? A passion project sticks to the source material as best as possible, does it's best to bring beloved characters to the screen and also tries to balance it's budget to get renewed and to give the fans what they want. They don't produce a mediocre faux "intellectual" show and then try to strong arm the producers into renewing by calling them bigots. Where is the passion for the material? Sounds like it's all about a pay check.

@@scribbles1424 A passion project is an emotional product vs financial one. My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Sound of Freedom were passion projects that happened to make money. Fame has proven far more important than money for most. The Peripheral differed from Gibson's book but was true to the ideas - wish it could have completed. I've told my wife a zillion times, "Why can't they just follow the book?" But "Twelve Monkeys" (a French novella) & "Magpie Murders" (Horowitz) were superb despite differing from the book. Writing and casting is more important than copying. "Battlestar Galactica" gender swapped yet is regarded as one of the best sci-fi shows ever made. These vids get annoying fast - clickbait repeating the same message ("Let's Hate Snow White") 10 times a day.
