AMAZON TROUT FISHING CHALLENGE - FLY FISHING EDITION!!
In this video I went onto Amazon and found one of the cheapest fly rod combos I could find, and then went fishing to prove a point: Fly Fishing Doesn't Have to Be Elite!! I spent less than $120 and I got more than enough equipment to catch some beautiful native brook trout.
I made this video to show someone who might be wanting to get into fly fishing an easy way to get started. It is always nice to have the newest and greatest gear. However, having all this expensive gear is not necessary to get out on the water and have a great time! I think sometimes people get so caught up in the gear that they forget the reason that they started fly fishing in the first place.
Thanks for watching!! Don't forget to subscribe, like the video if you enjoyed, and leave a comment!

I’m an old fart that’s been fishing my whole life and I really enjoyed this video. You broke it down really well and spoke some truths (like presentation over fly selection) that don’t get talked about as much as they should. If anybody out there is wondering if they can do it, you proved that they can. Find a little piece of water that you can get familiar with, get the bare minimum of gear that you need, and work on approaching the water and presenting the fly. The fish will eventually take care of the rest. (ps - Please exclude me from the giveaway - I’m set!)

I've been loving your videos, I'm always blown away by the quality despite being a relatively small channel. Keep up the great work. I don't have much in the way of good fly fishing where I live but I've been planning a trip to some trout water this spring with some friends who have never fly fished. I'm sufficiently equipped with my own fly fishing gear but I'm trying to come up with some more for my friends so they can have a great first experience and hopefully continue fly fishing. This setup would really help us out so I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring. Either way I'm looking forward to your next adventure!

I got into fly fishing on an 45$ Martin kit, a cheap heavy crappy rod with garbage line and a trash reel but it helped me get the basics, even just casting in my driveway was addicting. Since then I went fishing once this past summer and caught no fish on the fly but plenty with the spinning reel, today I am going to a local stocked pond with my 9’ 5wt Clearwater and a box of self toed flies.

Nice video, you don't need a 900 dollar rod to catch fish and good advice on the fly choice, if it looks like food and is presented properly the trout will eat it. Tight lines from Scotland

The first good fly line I purchased as a new fly fisherman blew my mind how a good line could make such a huge positive difference in my fishing. I think any of the cheaper combos are more than fine but they really lack decent line. I’d rather fish a $70 combo with a $100 fly line than a sage esn with a $20 line. Great video and content!!! Thanks.

This was a great intro video from start to finish. From the initial set up , how to properly handle fish to be released, to reading the water, and showing that you don't need an equipment layout of thousands to get into fish. That first brookie you had looked like it had some beautiful coloration in the brief glimpse of it we got. You also do a great job of promoting the sport. Your ending statement about counting your blessings and enjoy that you can be out there, whether you catch a fish or not, was spot on. Thanks for the opportunity to win this outfit as well. Take care and God bless. 👊🏼🇺🇸 P.S. No offense, but I'll take100, or more, of these beautiful fish over that orange fish you had in the last video any day of the week. 😉

My dad always fished with his fly pole and he passed away 5 years ago. I regret that I never had him teach me the art. One of those regrets that will last my life time. Watching your videos brings back days fishing with him. I saw him catch a native Brookie in a lil spring fed run that wasn't 2 foot across at it's widest and no more than 12" at it's deepest spot. I love to have that fly rod today.

It’s self explanatory because fish DON’T care what gear you’re using. They don’t look up and say “nah he’s using Walmart brand fly rod, it’s not an Orvis “ Lol so people that have been told fly fishing is expensive don’t know what they’re talking about.

Hey bud, I'm curious about the rest of your gear. Mostly your wading boots/waders and what not. I'm recently getting into fly fishing, end of last season here in NY and I've just done all my wading in regular clothes which obviously isn't great for any time other Summer lol. I actually bought the wild water 9ft 5wt kit, it seems to work really well! Have picked up some good knowledge and a handful of flies from some local shops. Which I think is often understated for newbie fly fisherman, if you don't know what flies to use/ what hatches are happening in your area. Go to your local shop, they're usually very knowledgeable on those kinds of things! Thanks for the videos man, your production value is through the roof!

Good fly rods are considerably more expensive than when I started... But there have always been cheap rods. Some are alright, and some are total junk. I learned the phrase "buy once, cry once," and to some degree this holds true with fly fishing. Some of these kits come with junk rods/reels, and an untapered fly line (which is far more difficult to fish with). I purchased a decent rod when I started, and it is still used as a spare, or a rod for someone else to use when I take them out to show them fly-fishing. There are some very good quality used used rods for sale as well, and I believe some of the better rods will still come with great warranties. If you are going to purchase that first "inexpensive" rod, I would do the research and look at reviews. Make sure if they come with line, that it is some sort of tapered line. I would not look for a cheaper setup if I were fishing for larger fish such as steelhead or saltwater.

I gotta admit ... you have put out some quality content in the past but I feel that this is one of your better videos. Why ? Cause there is Soooo much in this short video especially for a fly fishing newbe. Starting with a beginner/all affordable fly fishing combo, to environment selection, fish location, fly selection, setup and presentation. This just goes to show one can catch fish with a stick and line. I am not a beginner but I don't know what beginner/seasoned fisher who would not have enjoyed catching the fish you did. Especially that absolutely stunning Native Brookie at the 14 Minute Mark in the video. 👍well done !

I think the mysticism comes from the snobs and royalty from England. In the day it was the sport of kings ! But, places like ORVIS and others similar don't help. I've used the finest equipment money can buy. When you're standing in a stream with $300 Simms waders, $200 Simms vest, $130 wader boots, $75 net, $325 Able Trout1 and an $800 Sage rod , $80 Tilley hat and $170 Costa Del Mar shades at first it felt like a million bucks ! Eventually I became embarrassed and didn't want to be that fisherman any longer ! I remember once standing in a stream under the covered bridge on the Mohican in Ohio. Some guy walking up the bank stopped and asked, you're not from around here, are you ! After that I came back down to earth. I build my own rods, tie my flies and leaders. But you are 100% correct ! Anyone can do it on a budget ! And ORVIS is way overrated ! Most of their flies are tied in Pakistan or Vietnam !

I’m not interested in the combo but I still wanted to leave a comment. I enjoy the channel and quality of the streams and fish on here as well. The information given was great. But for someone who is new to fly fishing it can be somewhat intimidating. Highly recommend those who are getting into fly fishing practice their casting in the yard or local pond to get the mechanics of it. Too many false cast too fast and too long. Remember, you don’t catch fish with your fly out of the water and the longer you keep waving the rod. The greater the chance of spooking the fish. Also, I don’t recommend a guide fishing local waters. Many will tell you to get a guide and you don’t need to. RU-vid has many videos on casting and reading the water. Your video alone had great information on reading the water. Keep it up!!!

I love that you start off by saying fly fishing has a misconception as an elitist form of fishing. It's the opposite. Also fly fishing is not just for trout which is another misconception mainly because of movies and other depictions. I have never fished for trout on a fly rod in the 30 years I've been fly fishing. Mainly because in my area we have warm water that doesn't support trout year round. Love the channel.

I’ve been trying to learn more about fly fishing and reel fishing because my son has become obsessed with it. I noticed that you cast your fly rods sideways. Most other fly fishing videos cast overhead. Is there a reason you do this other than just comfort from when you started fishing with a spinning reel set up? I notice spinning reel fishermen tend to cast sideways like that more than overhead.

awesome video.......been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and I have to say that they are pretty doggone good. I have watched lots of other fly fishing videos and I think yours is right up there in the top 5. You hit the proverbial nail on the head in doing this challenge. You o not need to spend lots of money to go fly fishing , and it is also very rewarding way to fish. Anybody can catch a bass or catfish......kinda like hauling a sink out of a lake........but having to fight the fish on such a small tippet to me is the real challenge. Some of these smaller trout in these small streams is the real challenge of fishing.

I really love flyfishing I’ve been doing it for six years I’m 12 years old and I still haven’t caught a lot of trout I’m thinking it might be my rod because my rod is bright yellow but if you have any suggestions on anything I was thinking of spray painting it just let me know

This was the first fly rod I bought when I first started 6-7 years ago, I still use it as my backup fly rod and always bring it with me incase a friend of mine wants to learn

Neat challenge! I noticed the reel resembles the Maxxon Outfitter reels. Keep up the good work!

Accidentally turned my 9ft rod into a 8'6 thanks to a tree. It was too long for the small creeks near me and I always turned to my ultralight spinning setup rather than the fly. Definitely getting a lighter rod for this season.
