In Cameroon, fighting between the military and English-speaking separatists has killed more than 3,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. It's been nearly a year since the country started a national dialogue to address the crisis, but on the ground not much has changed. DW gained exclusive access to the frontline of the fighting. DW correspondent Blaise Eyong travelled with Cameroon government soldiers battling separatists in the anglophone areas which are the worst affected.
An exclusive DW report from Cameroon - on how the country's military is struggling to end a separatist struggle to create a breakaway state called Ambazonia.

The southern Cameroon are not fighting over languages. They are fighting the government regime of Paul Biya. They are fighting for their human rights. They were declared war on for peacefully protesting with green leaves and palm trees, asking to be treated as human beings. Any state built on the basis of authoritarianism, butchery, and corruption should be crushed at once. These Rebels might reference "Freedom" as a justification, but they slaughter, torture, and mutilate innocents, burn essentials for life (government supplied food/medicine) and commit human rights atrocities. Not to mention in every meaning of the word, this separatist movement is illegal. It's like saying ISIS should have been allowed to form their own state because they wanted to.

@@ethanragbir8311 but isnt that exactly the same allegations against the Cameroonian government? Your justification is hypocrisy at best. Insurgencies are rooted in injustice. I can understand the separatist movement, but I don't believe that is this the right way. Cameroon NEEDS unity. Highway emergency workers had units everywhere with contious workers. French Cameroon came and destroyed us. Only the all mighty will tell

Please sir, it is very wrong to call all of Cameroon a Francophone country. You are a journalist. Either you did not do your job correctly, or we, Southern Cameroonians, see that as an intentional act. If you did just a little bit of your work, you will know that one of the major problems in Cameroon is that, the people of Southern Cameroons speak English, but they are being forced to become Francophones. So, saying that all of Cameroon is a Francophone country means you too are part of the crowd that is forcing Southern Cameroonians to become Francophones. Cameroon has one side that speaks French, and another side that speaks English. And we do not even like to be called Francophones, or anglophones, because we are Africans. We have our own African languages and cultures.

@@pabloernesto8044 were they as proficient in speaking English the way people in English speaking nations of the world do? The answer to that is no. Were they as proficient in speaking French as other French speaking nations of the world? The answer is no. Do they speak their own God given languages? The answer to that is no. Do Africans in other African nations speak their own God given languages? The answer to that is yes. Is it important for Africans to speak their own God given languages? The answer to that, of course, is yes; if their own God given languages could replace foreign languages, the better. Is it not their own God given language? Don't peoples all over the world speak their own God given languages? Why are they prevented from speaking their own languages? Why are they not proficient in the language that is supposed to be their national language? Because they are required to learn two foreign languages. Is that correct? Is that fair? Is that Justice? Is there anything in this world today, that cannot be fixed if people determine that it needs to be fixed? There is nothing that cannot be fixed. All it takes is for people to decide to fix it. That needs to be fixed. It is wrong for a people to be required to learn two foreign languages and not learn their own God given language. We have adults who would have have a thought in their mind, but do not have the words to express the thought, simply because they are not proficient in any language. That is something that is supposed to happen to children, not adults. People are not supposed to go to school to learn the language they need to communicate with. It is supposed to come to them naturally as they grow old, because that is supposed to be the language spoken in their community. But Southern Cameroonians are denied that human right.
