I think her delivery needs a little more work, and I'd like to see her flesh out her routine with a little more content, but it's a decent start, and it's nice to see a woman getting a shot on the stage for once. As an editor, I appreciated the bits about "enrolling" and "Who booty is it?", and her marriage breakdown was pretty humorous. I just wish there'd been less pausin for effect, and more observations and commentary.

TenaciousC and terrible delivery. That could have Been a big part of the issue. Plus Steven already has a half hour opener then he comes out and does a half hour of stand-up to warm up the crowd then his monologue then this lady had to follow that. .. not exactly a fair shake. But you've got to feel your crowd. You can't just memorize a set and then perform it like a high school play

TenaciousC Horrible crowd, or maybe people who have good taste in comedy just find it annoying that 99% of women spend the whole time talking about how men suck and how men are stupid and incompetent while bragging about their intelligence and making stupid faces, showing how confidently they are about the constant man bashing.
@LordDice1
@LordDice1 6 лет назад
Laszlo Vajda not true, she spent a bunch of time bragging too and only man bashed about 95%of the time she found opportunity. The rest she made fun of her family (while explaining her worth as a better person) her friends (while mentioning her status as the best) her husband (while acknowledging he was disappointed In her lack of respect for herself (claimed it was a fault of his as a sneak attack while trying to show it was because he couldn't assess her talent and he's dumb) and never once mentioned her obviously privileged status as a financially stable child her entire life and how she looks down on other humans (including her poor husband who only has one job!!! That; "being a lawyer that's letting her live lavish" and pretend to be an aaaaamusing human as a hobby) poor guy . You must relate to your audience at the very least. She's talking down to us like only her and losers like her husband and below could ever understand hey possible God level humor😅 bullshit.nothing she said was funny! Funny is when we have relatable issues.not when you tell me how much better you are and leave me wondering.

The hard truth is that it is very difficult to win an audience over when you start off by letting them know that you are smarter than them. If I had to give her any advice at all, it would be to avoid telling the audience, or explaining to them, how smart you are, and just be smart about your comedy. Comedians have to be people with whom one can relate. In this bit, she does very little. Yes, women can relate to men hitting on them. What else is there? How many of those people in the audience have PhD degrees? I would like to see her cut the condescending faces. This is something that seems to be popular to do in today's comedy attempts, and it's akin to a fart joke. That is, it's okay once in a great while, and I don't mind it. But if your act is one big fart, then you've got work to do. I'd ask her to study other successful comedians who are like her. For example, Aisha Tyler is female, black, and very smart. She's also personable and yet tough. I've seen lots of her work, and it is as water-tight as a duck's asshole. Impeccable. This is what a seasoned professional looks and sounds like. Ms. Allen needs to spend about 3 more years at Sal's Comedy Hole open mic night before she should be on a stage. This is not an insult. Rather, it is a suggestion. I think that she has potential. Someone else mentioned a Ted Talk comedy act, which I think would be rather specialized, and that idea actually has potential. It's cool that Colbert is offering breaks to comedians who are getting started. Who knows, maybe she did better in the audition. It would be easy to dismiss me as a "hater" or a "misogynist," but I don't go liking or disliking comedians because of what's between their legs. It's all about comedy, and I think that I've been more than fair and constructive enough in this comment to have clearly made my point.

On a related note, don't be TOO smart. Just don't. It didn't work out very well for Dennis Miller. When getting a punchline relies heavily on detailed knowledge of 12th century battlefield dynamics, you know there's a problem.

@HexIsme 6 лет назад
110% agreement, DrumWild. Bo Burnham has "smart" comedy without coming out and boasting about how smart he is--even if he is a genius by most peoples standards. In turn, it makes the crowd feel more invested in what he's got to say. It's also easy to throw "racist" and "misogynist" around, but does it also make them racist/misandrist/misogynist to not enjoy other comedians' work? I don't like Daniel Tosh's stand-up comedy, does that make me racist against white people and misandrist? People need to chill out with that crap.
@gweebara
@gweebara 6 лет назад
Hex Isme OMFG my agreement with you reaches asymptotic percentages that I'm going to try and represent by 100% to the greater than Pi power. That being said can we just take a moment and talk about Aisha Tyler's performance on anything; her greatness really is what sold that line.

Let me be clear, her premises are good, she just needs to learn to sell it better and maybe rephrase some stuff to make it tighter. Shouldn't have opened with the PhD stuff, make us like you before you open with that, nobody wants to think that you're smarter than them, win us over first, then explain why you're smarter. :) Husband underwear would have been the opener had I been consulted.

I know no one's reading this anymore, but... I agree with several other commenters here that this set didn't work, but I don't think it was the audience (they were fine for the rest of the show) nor her ability to be funny (other clips of her I just watched, including some of the very same jokes, were funnier than this). The main problems seem to be the basic structure of the set and the persona/attitude she's projecting. She starts out presenting herself as an intellectual and tells a grammar-nazi type joke with a condescending attitude ("Here's the thing…" / "The word you're looking for…"). So, right off the bat she is digging herself into a hole. (Forgive the mixed metaphor.) The joke might have worked better if she had set up a _particular_ guy who was hitting on her (rather than the general "men") who was unlikable for some reason (a logical choice would be the _way_ he was hitting on her -- but she would have to act it out more than she did here to "sell" his unlikability), so the audience could more easily take her side in seeing the condescension as justified. Then the "who booty" joke (continuing the grammar-nazi premise) didn't really work for me because, again there was minimal setup/context. I was immediately asking myself, what was the nephew referring to? Why was he tweeting that? That just distracted me a bit and detracted from the joke. Then she finally gets to a somewhat self-deprecating premise (her husband not liking her doing comedy), but it's complicated by the fact that she's talking about his unexpressed attitude towards her, which makes the self-deprecating aspect of the joke not quite work -- or, at the very least, that makes it just kind of a bummer, because it's about a husband being disappointed in his wife. And then that immediately leads into a luke-warm assessment of marriage itself. Fortunately, this is followed by the most successful (IMO) bit in the routine, the "contradictory white girl statements" of the video title. Unfortunately, the "wifeymaterial" / "husband's underwear" followup to that is rather weak and underdeveloped -- and, again, both jokes basically present her in a "superior" position relative to the other person (she's "punching down" far too much in this routine). And then the bit about watching the husband's football tape is just plain mean sounding. She did this same joke much better in a clip elsewhere on YT: she left out the "dropped passes" and "not good" part of the joke and just trailed off after asking, "that's what it was? the knee injury?", thereby letting the audience fill in the blank about what the real reason was for "not making it". It was much more effective. Finally, the step-sisters joke was (just) okay, but again was based on a rather negative premise (divorce and step-sibling rivalry) and had a potentially offensive punchline (especially if you're a step-sibling to someone). Apart from that, it was also a bit of a "thinker" (the meaning of the punchline may not be immediately obvious), so it might have worked better in the middle of the set instead of at the very end. In summary, she made her job much more difficult than it needed to be by adopting a "superior" persona and "punching down" throughout, having other people be the butt of almost every joke (not to mention, these other people were always family members), and using premises based on largely negative situations. Unfortunately, the jokes were (in my opinion) not strong enough to overcome these difficulties. (After all, much comedy is based on discomfort, but it has to really pay off to not be dragged down by the discomfort.) Admittedly, she might have done better with a little more time, so she could flesh out the setups a bit more and perhaps use more than one punchline per setup. Based on the few clips I've seen, however, I don't think that's really her style. I think she simply made some wrong choices in putting together her "tight five".

nothing gets a crowd started like introducing yourself as "beeing superior" and "talking down to ppl about not being good enough" for the first minute in a comedy routine, then harping on a guy using "slang", to then start getting at jokes after 3 min....in a 5min slot lets try this again, shall we? now, i don't know her full routine, but if she wanted to play the "superior bitch" it worked, question is if ppl wanna listen to that for "commedy" without funny breaks, at least shuffle the content of the routine around and put the marriage jokes first so the crowd gets into the mood.

I was pointing out the stupid people in the comments section taking it so seriously, whereas this is a comedy act where it is all made up for a laugh. I applaud Stephen giving new comedians a break. Some are better than others. None so far are a threat to him. As for this lady, I like her approach. Using her intellect as the observation point. She was looking down at everyone with a dose of reality for each. I liked it. Definitely needs polish. The underwear bit needs work but has great potential. Maybe, "I know a lot of men are choosy about their underwear. My husband insists he isn't. He only buys white drawers. But, I think he just might be a closet fashionista cause he colors all his white drawers yellow and brown. I know cause every morning I have to pick up the underwear he discarded the night before. Every time I do I remind myself this man is a highly educated well respected, well paid professional an attorney, a member of the court and we are a good match. Then I pick up his underwear and I think, Aw hell nah! This man is an animal he is one step above making monkey sounds and throwing poop at the jury. Sometimes, I think about just giving up and calling in a hazmat team . I'm pretty sure those stains, they're toxic. I'm not sure his cast off drawers aren't alive.I have definitely seen life in a petri dish, looked just like that... yellow and brown. I try to stay positive. I try not to dwell on those less than pleasant aspects of married life. But, seriously, sometimes I feel I should just ask him, "Honey, when you were you a boy did anybody, anywhere, at any time mention anything along the lines of shaking and wiping as a basic function of male hygiene?

jim ford That’s way funnier and you just came up with that? They should have booked you on the show instead of her

Thanks, I did rush it though. I said "member of the court" it should have been "officer of the court" oh well. I kind of like it myself. I would be flattered if she saw it and liked it enough to use it.
