Approaching a valley full of hill giants in our campaign and found this piece to play in the background. Started the music and immediately rolled a nat 20 on initiative... let's go.
Party is waiting two weeks after a cliffhanger where all the walls in a tight room suddenly opened with many crossbows firing at them!!! Cant wait to use this. Also I sure listen to this for my own enjoyment!
You would think this would be used when the players are ambushed, but I used this for when my players ambushed the enemy soldiers after they completely skipped the boss fight. My players met up with a vigilante group set on taking down the enemy that raided and overran their home. The bard pitched an idea that their alchemist npc friend could poison the boss and then the town could close in on the soldiers. Their plan was to make a “delicacy” that was supposedly from a small town and had to be eaten in one bite, and being unable to hold it down was seen as weak. I, amazed with the idea and how well thought out it was, just let it happen, but not without a huge bump in the road. The boss rolled a nat 20 on knowing that the place this “delicacy” was from did not have such a thing. The bard smoothed it over with a “oops wrong friend, commoners are so forgetful haha” and the boss took the bait. They then whiffed a bunch on the soldiers.

"ALL HANDS ON DECK, LADS! AMBUUUSH!" the captain's voice harks over the deck which is now soaked from the lashing of waves the ship endured since braving the storm. A frantic scuttling of feet marches up the stairs as what appears to be a marauding pack of fish-men clamber up the ships' hull. Armed with harpoons, nets, and tridents, some of the deck hands are caught off-guard and dragged to their watery deaths down into the depths below. You ready your weapon - the ship has sailed into the middle of a Kuo-toa raiding party. Roll for initiative.
As the amphitheatre’s crowd screams, after having lit barrels of gunpowder launched at them from the 6 mysterious red cloaked figures on stage, they frantically try to escape. Simultaneously. Throngs of people push past you all, trampling on each other in a desperate attempt to selfishly secure their own safety, while others wail at the horrific sight of nearby bodies writhing around encompassed in flame. What should’ve been a fireworks display to end an opera, has quickly descended into lives going out with a bang. One of the performers on stage confronts a red hooded figure, angrily gesticulating but the screaming of the audience drowns her out completely. The figures in red all draw steel, and I would like you all to roll initiative for me please.
I am listening to this at work (at a fairly low volume), and, for whatever reason, I thought it would make interesting music when you are "on hold" on the phone. :)
Wizard: Oh God! They're not Tolkienian Goblins. Eastern European Goblin: That's right and we're here to punish you for not cleaning your fireplace mantle and paying respect to your house spirit's! Wizard: Can't we just leave out food for you in exchange for good luck in our homes? Eastern European Goblin: That is acceptable... BTW do you want a drink of water? Just promise not to get too greedy.
You emerge within an opening in the goblin cave. There, in the middle sits a platform with a cage. The prisoners you were tasked to rescue! But between you and them stands a dozen goblins armed with scimitars. “Execute the prisoners,” a bulky one screams, “and archers, rain hell upon them.” That’s when you notice the line of goblins on raised wooden platforms on either side of you. Three of the goblins begin running to execute the prisoners, and the rest bare sharp teeth and sharp blades and grin at you with bloodlust in their eyes. Roll initiative.
My players are going straight into a combat on Friday that they’re already fully aware of, and yet it’s the ambush of a lifetime for these particular PC’s.🤣😁💕They’re all so excited for it, but they were also like, “f*** you, girl!”😂Can’t wait to start off the session with this music.😋🤣
